Older people is ruling as record buyers

A certain kind of music is selling huge amounts in Estonia nowadays. We called it "süldimuusika" -- primitive old-style dance-music. Made by bands mostly containing a singer a la Engelbert Humperdink and a keyboard player. These bands are performing mostly evergreens and original compositions with banal melodies and sentimental (sometimes silly) lyrics. And wihtout any musical effort. Those groups are selling 10 times more than normal rock or other artists. Most estonian professional musicians are making their living with such music.
I think older people are still loyal CD - buyers. Youngers have their free mp3s etc. How`s the situation in other countrys?

If this is true then it's fascinating.

Old people from Estonia are the new boybands SHOCKAH!

Nick Mirov (nick), Sunday, 13 April 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, though: are there any online mp3s of süldimuusika acts, or of any other popular Estonian music? I'd be interested in hearing some.

Norah Jones to thread!

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 13 April 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Estonian Norah Jones is Hedvig Hanson. No, Norah Jones is "new" Hedvig Hanson coz Hedvig released her "Tule Mu Juurde" 2001 and it sounded just like Norah Jones`s LP year later. :)...or Norah Jones is sounding just like Hedvig Hanson. :P

i had figured pia fraus was the biggest band in estonia. how could you beat a cool combo of Lush and Rocketship inspired sounds?

I liked Dallas, are they still going?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 14 April 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Dallas split after last LP "Delay Lama". Their singer Kristi Kindel left coz "Dallas was never professional enough".
Pia Fraus. I don`t know what they are doing now. For me Fraus is too similar to Dallas. Maybe a bit milder and more human. Dallas` cool and cold indie-pop (influenced by Stereolab) was real blueprint for many bands in 90s.

pia fraus have a new ep out soon

(instead of penning piercin' pieces of crit'sism & beating the crap outta 'sült'mongers?)
