If you can, find the "Radikal Fear" compilation put on his lable. Mixture of tracks done by him and artists on his label (more prominent ones being Armando and K Hand). Stretches from post-Moroder epics to real hard Relief/Green Velvet style bangers. One of my favourite house compilations.

Tim, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Felix Da Housecat - Kittenz and thee Glitz - is released next week on City Rockers. I have heard a few tracks played by Arthur Baker, expect a mixture of house, techno, synth pop and electro sounds. Also noticed that it is album of the month in the new Muzik magazine. Definately set to be one of the big electronic albums of the year.

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

yes, it looks like this is going to happen. but then, the record company fluffed the release of I Know Eletrikboy in 99. is the new album similar to this one? it all seems quite different from the afrohead stuff of the mid 90s, which was ok but too drab in a dave clarks red 2 kind of way. rob armani was always better at the warehouse shit

gareth, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

City Rockers is a new label, they seem to be promoting the album well. I have not experienced the previous albums.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

'By The Dawn's Early Light' by Thee Madkatt Courtship is well worth finding, if you have nae already.

I can't locate the bloody thread where Gareth (I think) wrote 'Kittenz & thee Glitz' was a dissapointment. Gareth, what did you make me do?!! I didn't buy the album because of that comment (and well because they were charging some outrageous price for it), just got it second-hand this weekend and it's amazing! One of the albums of the year. Total 1980-1982 electro pop utopia.

Omar, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

if i'm honest, i think i probably haven't given it a fair go really. i 'll give it another chance. have you heard I Know Electrikboy, Omar?

gareth, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well in a sick game of ILM tag I bought it because of Omar's rave (those magic words "1980-1982 electropop") and now *I'm* disappointed.

Tom, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nope, I suppose it must be good then? How about Miss Kitten & The Hacker? I hear good things about that one.

Omar, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oops, sorry about that Tom. :) But that's really how it sounds like, of course I should have said: the good Italo-Germanic side of 1980- 1982 technopop, not the average British Human League/New Order side of things, yeah? ;)

Omar, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Actually yeah, Omar, that does help. I'm listening to it now and now I'm not expecting the peerless pop thrill of a Human League I find myself enjoying its Thomas Leer-esque stylin's. I think it helps that I've got my good headphones and not my crap ones on, too.

Tom, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I having been raving about Felix Da Housecat - since the Spring! on my weblog. Welcome aboard! better late than never - it certainly is shaping up to be one of the albums of the year.

Felix should have got a front cover with the NME this year but instead they support hyped no talent/ hyped rubbish such as Andrew W.anK.er - the only thing this plank will achieve - will be stacks of copies in HMV bargain buckets in Jan 2003 with a 2.99 sticker.

DJ Martian, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Jan 2003 Martian? You give the man too much credit.

Anyway by the end of the record I was really enjoying it.

Tom, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Could all concerned please observe correckt spelling PLEASE: it's "miss kittIn". And you're nasty.

is afrohead the same as did "thee light"?

That new mix-cd Excursions is wicked too.

Omar, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

is his new mix album any good?

minna, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I miss him playing here cos I'm in London.

Bah.

He has lots of great stuff, Maddkat Courtships Enter Lite Exit Nite is fantastic, even 5ive thought so. Kittenz and Thee Glitz and his half of the Justin Robertson/Felix Bugged Out mix album deserve to be mentioned too.

Ronan, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Dave Clarke mix of "Thee light" is still awesomely powerful and evil sounding.

jacob, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I do like Excursions, especially for the way it starts out with nu electro-pop, shifts into hard techno, and then comes back to being poppy. Felix also did a promo-only mix for Emperor Norton that's a little messier, though I think I like it as much as Excursions. Instead of the bangin' bit, there's Nitzer Ebb, Radiohead, Adult., Prince, Yoko Ono, Metro Area, Model 500, etc. There's just a little overlap between the two.

Andy K, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ronan, have to disagree with you about the bugged out mix. Problem is I don't think he can mix, not on that record anyway, or maybe it's just a duff set of tunes. But I suppose that in a mix set, that's one and the same thing.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Finally got to "Excursions" last night (another CD that was in my Amsterdam pile). Man, it's fabulous. It's not as immaculately mixed as, say, American Gigolo (the segué from Bolz Bolz to "Silver Screen Shower Scene" made me cringe) but I loved all the tracks.

Surprisingly, given what I've been saying about pop on the electro (clash) threads, it was what Andy K describes above as the hard techno section in the middle of the mix that I liked best. I swear to God it affected me in the same way as MBV's Loveless does.

Jeff W, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Excursions is why I need money currently.

Ronan, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

That Bolz Bolz track on Excursions is utter, utter genius btw. But yeah the techno segment is excellent, as i said on kindamuzik, strange how those Mills-style tracks work better in an electro set.

Omar, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh yes, let me join the praise party. 'Excursions' is fabulous. Electro-pulses, neon lights, glitz, '80s flashbacks, synth-pop morphs into techno and back. Debbie Harry whoops along in the background. A delight.

So has anyone picked up the Metropolis Thee Album reissue? Great dark house music, can't exactly remember why I missed it in 1995 (probably shite distribution). The Rocket Mann album also has been reissued, anyone know how it fits in the overall Felix scheme of things?

Omar (Omar), Saturday, 14 December 2002 20:30 (twenty-two years ago) link

I was wondering today if that Daniel Diamond "Champu" single on City Rockers is actually just Felix himself? I could be wrong of course but I just thought it's very like something he'd do, ie fucking great.

Bit of prescience from DJ Martian upthread...

Clashbackk comp track list:

Tracklisting:
1 Harry Havana Hissling Hurricane
2 Aphrohead Blindmanwilly
3 Proffessor Traxx Greenland Thump
4 Felix Da Housecat Zeka's Solar Device
5 L.A. Williams Logan's Run
6 Stare5 Bloodloop2
7 Erik Nore Help Me
8 Bryan Zentz Vaccine
9 Aphrohead While They Watched
10 Thee Maddkatt Courtship Vengeance Of A Madman
11 Thee Maddkatt Courtship Mommy Why?
12 Spanky Rejoice 2 Phreedom

Haven't actually heard it, but the fact that it's from '97 and therefore from a creative low point for chicago artists as Relief had played out its innovations and Felix was yet to go glittery suggests to me that it'll be fairly average hard minimal detroit-isms, but with bigger kickdrums.

But that could be prejudicial nonsense.

New full length album Son of Analogue available with the April issue of Mixmag. A third of it is him experimenting with D&B-ish drum patterns and the rest seems like the source material for Last Train To Paris. Only on my second listen, but so far this is my favorite track...
