FLEETWOOD's BAC!

Has anybody heard the new Fleetwood Mac album, "Say You Will," that comes out this week? It's a shame Christine McVie ain't on it, boo hoo, but BUCKINGHAM and NICKS are back! Together! Holy Guacamole!

For some reason I'm really excited about this album. Despite the fact that there's 18(!) songs on it and I haven't heard anything aside from "Silver Spring" (which I thought was nice) that these people have done for a decade. Does it rock? Is anybody else excited about this?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 14 April 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Peacekeeper" kicks ass, even with the unneccessary sample included. And even if the lovely voice of Christine McVie is absent, Buckingham contributes highly enough to make up for the loss. though it's a shame that Little Stevie had to tag along. I'd love to hear the Mac as a pure pop power trio.

oh BABY i can't WAIT!!

" Does it rock? Is anybody else excited about this? "

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Monday, 14 April 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it can only be YES on both counts

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 April 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

They were playing "Bleed To Love Her" on the last tour & I didn't love it. Plus my favorite songs have generally be Christine's. But: FLEETWOOD MAC! FLEETWOOD MAC!

I just had a crazy vision of Christine being replaced by Liz Phair. Actually, that would be great.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 14 April 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

oh BABY i can't WAIT!!

As long as it doesn't sound like Stevie's "I Can't Wait", then I'm excited.

I just submitted a 150-word review of this to a local weekly. It's pretty great in some respects, though it definitely has flaws. Christine McVie is missed, for sure--for her songs and voice, but also for the balance I always felt she provided alongside Nicks's and Buckingham's more esoteric (to say the least) musings (which is not to say that I don't love what Nicks-Buckingham do). I also don't really hear the one absolutely killer track, though a few come close for sure (the title, "Miranda," Nicks's discofied "Running Through the Garden"), and maybe it just hasn't revealed itself yet (hey, I only heard the thing a few times).

What's great about it: Buckingham's production is more outlandish than ever on a few tracks (I compared "Come" to Flaming Lips, which was me pandering to the weekly crowd, though I still think it makes sense...not to imply that FM weren't doing this kind of thing long before FL were even around, mind you), and it's a very consistent record; there's not a single dud track in my view. First time I listened to it, as each new song came up I kept saying to myself, "Yes, this is excellent!" And my enthusiasm hasn't waned at all...I really just wish there was one magic song I'd have to return to again and again.

s woods, Monday, 14 April 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Scott, your use of the word "discofied" has inspired me to buy this album asap. I've had Nicks' "Talk To Me" and "Stand Back" in my head all day. Gotta go buy "Timespace" too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 14 April 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It was my understanding that Buckingham would be turning an aborted solo effort entitled "Gift Of Screams" into the bulk of the new FM album, but it doesn't look like it ended up that way. However, one of my favorite "Screams" tracks (Buckingham's "Goodbye To You") ended up near the end of the record, and that track alone is worth the price of admission...and it KILLS on DVD-Audio.

Erick H (Erick H), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

...and did anybody else hear about a cancelled Buckingham/Fleetwood tour that was supposed to happen a few years ago? I had front row tix for that one, and I'm still chewing the bitter herb over the fact that it didn't happen. I missed out on the Buckingham solo tour in 1993, and I missed out on this.

Erick H (Erick H), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Good call on that Buckingham track--it's pretty weird and pretty great. (It's called "Say Goodbye" on the album.)

I've been thinking of asking around here (I should probably just search first) what people think of Buckingham's solo stuff. I haven't heard any of it, but he dominates Fleetwood Mac so much on the last few records I assume some of it is worthwhile?

Anthony, "Stand Back" is a very good reference point for "Running Through the Garden." It's rock-disco in an almost "Maniac" vein, with great synths (and her voice is ferocious).

s woods, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Lindsey Buckingham: C o' D?

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Son of a....you people are actually making me consider buying this album now. Shame on you.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(it's that promise of Buckingham weirdness that's doing it for me, by the way...always love his wacko stuff on Mirage and even Tango in the Night)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean, it's worth it for the Buckingham stuff alone, although the balancing effect of Christine McVie is missed. Also, it's interesting that "Say You Will" is 70+ minutes long (just a little bit shorter than "Tusk") yet there's no mention of "double album bloat" this time around. Must be a combination of the digital age and lowered expectations.

Erick H (Erick H), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think people SHOULD complain more about bloat, but I think after years of 2CD rap "albums," most people treat it like a done deal.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

God, Stevie sounds so great on "Destiny Rules."

s woods, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

And Lindsey Buckingham can get away with stuff that makes so many other people seem like gits when they do the same thing (like when he's real close into the mic and does the frightened-whisper thing). That bridge in "Say Goodbye" is heavenly.

s woods, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it's just my imagination, but why is NBC hawking them?
Dateline had a segment on them (selling the Rumours/soap opera angle) last night, and on "Today", just now, they came back from a commercial break with "Little Lies" and said they'd talk more about the band.

I'm also in the "Where's Christine" camp...great voice, and I tend to like her songs the most.

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Downloaded this a few days ago. WOW is all I can say. Trying not to gush too much, but I think it's their best since 'Tusk'.

charley, Friday, 18 April 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I caught the end of the concert on MuchMoreMusic. I never noticed how great "Rhiannon" is before.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Best song still = "Say You Love Me"
falling falling falling (Lindsay Buckingham: "Yeah")

Joe (Joe), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really trying to like this, but...

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want to hear this now, too. I have going NUTS listening to "Hold Me" for the past three days. I always loved it growing up but I never bought the Mirage record. I recently downloaded "Hold Me" and I'm flabbergasted at how good it is, better than I ever remembered. I want to start a thread about it.

Why does Fleetwood Mac look like the cast of Rocky Horror?

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
up to track 5 on this, "Thrown Down" my favourite so far.. i like the production, very not-hi-gloss..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 8 May 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I just bought Mirage last night! Near mint vinyl copy for $2! Fuck is it a good record; I don't know why it took me so long to pick up.

Jim give us a report when you finish!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 8 May 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

both tracks 5 and 6 are initially not great but by the end i become aware that i've been really enjoying them. this doesn't seem an especially straightforward record which is a very good thing

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 8 May 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

halfway point: Stevie's songs definitely the most immediate. the single "Peacekeeper" nice but possibly the least *interesting* track so far.. "Come" v. strange so far..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 8 May 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

..but improving as it goes along.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 8 May 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

tracks 10-12 quite nice. still no out-and-out classics yet though..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 8 May 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

track 14 & 15 both fantastic

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 8 May 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

16 great, 17 "say goodbye", a lindsey track, possibly my favourite.. lots of insane fingerpicked guitar

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 8 May 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Verdict: a nice consistent record, I don't hear any big pop hits per se but there's definitely some real growers. The second half of the album is the better half - in fact the last third is the best. Nice!

I do miss CMcV. It does feel like there's a little *too much* Lindsey, if that makes sense..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 8 May 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaahhh ... yr making it sound good! I love love love Buckingham's guitar playing. Also yr comment upthread about the production is heartening. Listening to that Mirage record last night I realized it doesn't really matter if the drop-dead hooks are always there with these folks; it's the things buried in the mix, the way intruments creep into the foreground, the background vocal arrangements, the stereo spacing ....

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 8 May 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

this album is weird. I need to listen to it some more before my final opinion but Buckingham seriously needs to lay off the shred guitar.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 9 May 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Buckingham seriously needs to lay off the shred guitar.
wha-wha-whaaaaa?!

I haven't heard it yet, but Buckingham's guitaring is the only reason I listen to Fleetwood Mac.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 9 May 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "Red Rover."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 9 May 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The verse melody of "Say You Will" reminds me of the Psych Furs' "Pretty in Pink."

five years pass...

anyone been to / going to the current shows?

The setlist is totally boring.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 12 March 2009 02:44 (sixteen years ago)

they could play don't stop for an hour and i'd still be happy

w/ sax (electricsound), Thursday, 12 March 2009 02:49 (sixteen years ago)

saw Lindsey solo twice in the last year and a half, in smaller G.A. venues where i was like 10 feet from him, so decided to skip this.

lot of overlap between the setlists too, from what i've seen (LB did 'Tusk', 'World Keeps Turning', 'I'm So Afraid', 'I Know I'm Right', 'Secondhand News', 'Never Goin BAck Again', 'Big Love' and 'Go Your Own Way'....)

Would have totally loved to see them doing 'Oh Well' though..!

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 12 March 2009 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

No Christine, no credibility... seriously.
