Which two Arab Strap albums should I buy first?

'philophobia' and 'the week never starts round here'

the third is terribly dull, and i haven't heard 'red thread'

Wha?! Elephant Shoe (the third) is when I thought they'd really hammered out all the stray ideas of the first two into a beautfifully cohesive package. The Red Thread and Monday At the Hug and Pint just lift the pedestal higher.

ah. i think i'm more into the stray ideas side of things..

philophobia

followed by elephant shoe

the first one is pure ass, except "the first big weekend" and "deeper".

I think The Red Thread is the best. Philophobia and Elephant Shoe also good. Surprisingly good live.

the only song I've ever enjoyed is Turbulence, which I think is on 'The Red Thread'. I haven't heard much else, but what I have I've disliked. Turbulence is gorgeous.

The first album is rough as a Scotsman's saturday morning, but I used to love it so much, and it kind of stands alone in the Arab Strap catalogue. Really rough and folksy, it's more like Moldy Peaches than anything else I can think of off the top of my head. Philophobia is just great, and probably the best place to start. I thought they slipped for a bit on Elephant Shoe and The Red Thread, but the new one sounds like a return to form.

another vote for "philophobia". i didn't buy anything after as they seemed to repeat themselves in a bad way. the lyrics on philophobia are phantastic. pretty obscene and direct.

Philophobia AND Elephant Shoe

Then, if you need more, the live album.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say Philiphobia and the first one, but also think the live one is great. In fact, certain songs, like New Birds, have better timing on the live album then on philiphobia. I just find the way he sings it live just gives it a greater impact.
If you see any of their singles cheap, the b-side to Here We Go, called Trippy, is GREAT.
The new one sounds really great too. Can't wait to pick it up.

The live one is amazing, in particular here we go, it features a brilliant moment which always makes my hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

chris (chris), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's a vote for Elephant Shoe.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ok my vote is for The week never starts around here & Philophobia
Philophobia is grreat and The week... is a great rollercoaster

Jens (brighter), Monday, 14 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally forgot about the live one - that one IS great

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i really didn't think the live one was anything special... i gave it so many chances too... new birds and maybe one other song were the only real (albeit minor) improvements over the studio material.
