Spiritualized and Pachelbel (sic) and theft...

Radio 2 last night at about 9.45 were playing a really beautiful piece of classical music which I thought I recognised, and then realsied why; it's Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space by yer man Jason! "All I want in life's a little bit of love to take the pain away..." etcetera, only of course it didn't have words or guitars and wasn't about Kate Radley and smack, and I seemt o remember a girl I made a tape for many years ago telling me that he'd nicked the tune off Pachelbel (Pachobel? That sounds too much like Taco Bell!) and I know nothing about classical music, even less than I know about anything else being a hopeless and shameless dilettente, so what's the chap's name really and and what's the tune/piece/track/song called? And where can I get it cheap? It was ace.

God, I sound so excited.

lots of people have ripped off pachebel's canon. ani difranco, for one, unfortunately.
i can't remember which annoying song it was, though.

The Farm : 'Altogether Now'

There's a His Name Is Alive song that uses it, too. Except I think it was a cover, as well, that was ripped off a rip-off. Jason Pierce in nicking tunes from other artists shocker!

As a friend of mine pointed out, 'Ladies and Gentleman...' also = 'Grandad' by Clive Dunn.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 14 April 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

He was called Johann Pachelbel, and it's the 'Canon', and it's on a lot of "discover the classics!" compilations, genaerally paired with the 'Gigue', for some reason. If you want it new, Naxos is the biggest budget classical record label I can think of; otherwise, there's usually a few copies in second-hand shops and boot fairs.

...I have 'Grandad' in my head now. aaaaaaaaaah. the PAIN.

Which hip-hop artist was it that sampled the Canon a few years ago?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 14 April 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

three variations of pachelbel's canon in d-major are also on the second side of eno's discreet music. the better side of that record as side 1 consists just of very slow low-key repeated patterns. music to make wallpapers peel off the walls very slowly.

Oasis have used the chord progression in 2 singles and a b-side.

Jez (Jez), Monday, 14 April 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

If pachelbel were alive today he would have millions in royalites from unoriginal pop songs (i don't think 'the graduation song has been mentioned yet- which directly sampled i think). also from boundless numbers of street busking string quartets. my friends used to make hundreds of dollars an hour playing pachelbel's cannon on the streets of touristy victoria b.c.

Why's it named ater a gun?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 14 April 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Pachebel was very well-endowed.
