Tom Lax vs the ghost of Angus Maclise

Does anyone have the poop on the burblings that Tom Lax,Siltbreeze chef, used the money from his Angus Maclise profits and bought a house instead of handing it over to Hetty Maclise per the arrangement she had with Tim Barnes?I need to have this elucidated so I don't get nauseous thinking that Lax is some sort of throwback to the guys who took all those po' black jazz guys money and ran.

I've never heard this rumour. Do you really think there was enough money generated by the two Siltbreeze releases to buy a house, though? Seems implausible.

Between the people who read Wire, shoppers at Other Music in NYC,rack rifflers at Aquarius in SF,and millions of VU fans, you can bet there was enough ducks generated to buy several tins of Walkers Shortbread.

how many copies of this release were sold? I do find it hard to believe there was enough money made (there are VU fans but how many of them know that maclise exists).

how many copies of this release were sold?If even 50 cents was generated over and above costs, promised to Hetty, amd then never paid then gripes izz good.

SUE MINGUS TO THREAD!!!

scott seward, Monday, 14 April 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

come on: who cares if its 50 cents?!

its the first time i'm hearing this BTW.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio, .50 on 500 copies sold = $250.

I thought the reason that Siltbreeze stopped being involved was that the label was shutting down, but I guess that if this rumor is true, that'd be a likely reason too.

hstencil, Monday, 14 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, so I misread you Julio. Anyway, a deal is a deal, and 50 cents is 50 cents.

hstencil, Monday, 14 April 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Its not about the 50 cents.its about some 60's thrashed Scot chick sitting there on an income so fixed it's broken..Goin to her mailbox every day looking for her Philly return address and gettin cobwebs instead..We were the indie cabal who was gonna fix deeds that undone all the Jackie Wilson abortions and Supremes blaxploitations and instead the same ground is being tread.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

well if its true its sad. but isn't there a piece of paper with this agreement etc.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

As per most of these kinds of things it was done on good faith through Tim Barnes and Hetty via Ira Cohen circumcumferenced by Tony Conrad shunted through Tom Lax

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Monday, 14 April 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

if it's true, then it suxxxxxxx big time. I always had respect for Lax because of the good stuff he put out.

hstencil, Monday, 14 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It would seem likely based on what i heard about why Dead C records are no longer on Siltbreeze.

hamish (hamish), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you folks please move on to another topic? It is pretty painful to read. Be happy that Angus's music is still being released, no matter who tries to screw it up. The MacLises could always be better off, but I KNOW they are doing fine.
Do you like Astral Collapse?

tbarnes, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Astral Collapse is great -- might even be my favorite yet, tim.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, it rules. My favorite is still Thunderbolt but this one is a close second.

Hey Tim, it's James (G Calves)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the thing that made Astral Collapse stand out, is that though the first two were A+, they were what I expected, even though I had never heard Maclise before -- if that makes senses.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

rack rifflers at Aquarius in SF

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaahahhaah

i miss dan bunnybrain.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i would like to know the story behind the rumor, though. it would trouble me deeply if the accusation against Tom Lax were true -- sort of like if I discovered my dad beat my mom or something.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

well, jack . . .you should find the number of your nearest domestic violence council, or perhaps a shrink.

tbarnes, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Tim, Joel Hunt here. I just wanna say that I totally appreciate and love all the hard work you've put in on the re-issues, they're totally great.

hstencil, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

HSTENCIL SAID HIS NAME.

Does that mean the world is about to collapse?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

*walls coming down*

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe so, and I could've emailed Mr. Barnes off-thread, but I just wanted to make known my appreciation (plus say "hi").
