You know, forlorn, dust-in-the-wind instrumental blues type stuff

oops (Oops), Monday, 14 April 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Calexico, maybe?

I've never seen "Paris, Texas."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Marc Ribot, Saints.

Ben Williams, Monday, 14 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything by Steven R. Smith should do, esp Tableland.
Soulwax' Conversation Intercom features That Ry Cooder Guitar, but the track is not instrumental.

Wintermute (Wintermute), Monday, 14 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

John Fahey, America
Robert Pete Williams

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 14 April 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

And duh Blind Willie Johnson on whose music much of the stuff on the Paris, Texas soundtrack is based.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 14 April 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(Namely "Dark Was the Night--Cold Was on the Ground.")

I own some BW Johnson stuff--it's very good but his voice grates on me, hence the 'instrumental' condition in my request. (however, if you know of someone who produces music like this and has a soothing, sweet voice I'd love to hear about it)

oops (Oops), Monday, 14 April 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but he just hums on that song (it's one of the epochal pieces of American music).

You might want to try the two volumes of Blow My Blues Away on Arhoolie. Joe Calicott, really early R. L. Burnside, Robert Nighthawk, and etc., plus some really wild fife-and-drum stuff.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 14 April 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh how could I forget: search Mance Lipscomb and Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 14 April 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of Tom Verlaine's solo stuff approaches the same level of atmosphere.

christoff (christoff), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Also search some of Rainer Ptacek's solo albums, especially Nocturnes

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of Loren Mazzacane Connors, especially one called The Crucible with his wife Suzanne Langille. And the Stations of the Cross 7". Actually, like I said, lots.

Sandy Bull, occasionally. Leo Kottke sometimes.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

A Small Good Thing - Slim Westerns.

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Monday, 14 April 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 14 April 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

forlorn, dust-in-the-wind instrumental blues type stuff

said stuff frequently figures also in Bill Frisell's music

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 14 April 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Labradford: Mi Media Narranja
- somewhat more droney, though. And sonically updated for a fin de siecle-like feel. It's fucking great.

Jay K (Jay K), Monday, 14 April 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh - loren mazzacane connors just like has been said upthread. most paris texasy of them possibly "in pittsburgh", "a possible dawn", "long nights". also SCOTT TUMA's "hard again" cd which is kinda like what you might wish o'rourke's "bad timing" was - that's the most perfect fractal country twang instrumentals album perfect for watching snowfall to. john fahey's "womblife" also worth checjking even tho he slips into gamelan collage territory. also bill frisell (again as upthread) "good dog happy man" even features ry cooder on one track v. wistful. and blazing saddles by yello.

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 29 July 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

Harris Newman has a bit of this to him on his "Accidents With..." album. Real sparse and tense.

ogmor, Monday, 30 July 2007 02:51 (eighteen years ago)
