American Spring -- C/D?

Ok, I fucking love Brian Wilson, but after all the build-up I'd had w/ this record, I can hardly express how disappointed a friend and I were when we each heard this. And we gave it more than one shot.

So what gives? Even after I gave it another spin recently, the record still seems like just a totally limp karaoke record, with weak vocals, uninspired arrangements, cover versions of BW and DW tunes all inferior to the original. As much as I love Paul Williams of Crawdaddy fame, his take on this--"This version of 'This Whole World' reaches a Smile-level of creativity"--seems so far off -- like hero-worshipping excuses at its very worst.

Am I missing something?

I don't think yer missing anything. I ordered a copy ov "spring" on CD, which is this k-obscure '70's prog album, and the CD supplier screwed up, and sent me a copy ov american spring. I read the blurb abt it, and I figured it must be great, i mean i really wanted to like it, but it just wasn't that good (yer description = accurate) UK "Spring" isn't that great either, but it had its moments, i suppose.

I was searcing ILM yesterday to see if anyone had talked about American Spring recently. I think they are absolutely fantastic - far better than some similarly peddled stuff like Wendy & Bonnie, Margo Guyran, which isn't to say that those are bad in any way! I think comparing it to Smile-level creativity might be going a bit too far though.

I think the female harmonies and general vocal sound is great - way better than the Honeys production.
