oh god no. please no. i like Cex a lot. leave him alone.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Cex is amazing live. That's really all I have to say on the subject. I bought the Role Playa EP when I saw him, but very rarely listen to it--it's glitchy IDM stuff. His low-tech/white boy hip hop rules. It can be a bit twee, what with the tracks about riding bikes and whatnot, but it's got some serious power to it. Also, he's a funny, funny guy live, and the between song banter was rather hilarious (reproducing it here would have no effect, as it was all jokes targetted to Providence scenesters.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

what am i , chopped Haven Bros burger meat??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to keep forgetting there are people here from Providence. Fuckin...

Yeah, he made jokes about living in mills and building paper mache monsters, drawing comix and silkscreening posters all day. He also made jokes about Arab on Radar.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

beck is the idm beck.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, but without the massive comercial sucess.

ddd, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, but I think this guy blows. I saw him live on the Death and Dismemberment Tour and he was just embarrassing. Everyone ignored him.

j breitling (BlastsofStatic), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Cex makes me feel like Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon, i.e., "I'm too old for this shit."

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

beck has had massive commercial success and is more 'idm sounding' than most commercial (rock) artists. midnight vultures is about as "idm-is") as pop gets brutha.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Cex's lyrics, even at their most inane, are pretty personal and full of opinions and ideas. Beck's lyrics have always been a mish mash of phonetic nonsense, even since he's become a molasses-voiced balladeer, just dressing up in the usual 'meaningful' cliche's. Cex comes at rap with a sincere enthusiasm for the lyricism and the culture without getting hung up on a lot of the undie/mainstream bullshit. Beck does some neat sample/pastiche stuff now and then but seems much less interested in hip hop, or in subverting its conventions.

which begins to explain why this thread title annoys me greatly. not that i'm trying to justify the dumb crap Rjyan does, but those kind of reductionist comparisons, when applied to pretty much anyone, make my skin crawl.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Cex rules unilaterally!

cprek (cprek), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

cex's lyrics are pretty onesided. give me mish mash phonetic nonsense over cex's "yo im so real! (said in a fake ghetto accent) heres my philosophy on the music biz!" schtick anytime. that one part on "oops i did it again" that is a sample of him being interviewed over the phone is pretentious as fukk. actually beck's lyrics are pretty damn personal on every album he's ever done so your argument doesnt really stick.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

well at least let's agree with the threadstarter's confession that the comparison doesn't work.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Cex was boring live. Frat boys wanted him to rap about titties. I left early..

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

you should have stayed awhile, he would have taken you outside the venue, en masse, to sing pearl jam songs.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah,I just was listening to Being Ridden. I don't think i like it.

Its too pretentious for even hip--hop. its white bouy poseur pisstaking the ghetto but he still needs it.. I guess it was more the guitar folksy stuff on Being Ridden reminding me of Beck.

but i always thought the MC Flashbuldb track Cex Sux was pretty amusing. - but shit.

sorry i will no longer reduce to such inanity the obvious nuances of two so *very* different artists.

Cex would sound more like Beck if he was on Warp instead of Tigerbeat.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't buy this equation of Beck with IDM. Does someone want to try to explain that? None of his records sound much like my IDM records.

j breitling (BlastsofStatic), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, but I think this guy blows. I saw him live on the Death and Dismemberment Tour and he was just embarrassing. Everyone ignored him.

YES. BUT--I don't respect people who like Death Cab for Cutie.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
I'm telling you...Maryland Mansions...the new tongue-in-cheek Goth Cex.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 7 July 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah what's the go with maryland mansions? didnt i read it was on tigerbeat? goth???

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Monday, 7 July 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's gonna be MEOW 085, as far as I've been told. Yeah, Goth-ish and Reznor-esque. But self-consciously ridiculous. The whole thing is about different ways to kill yourself. He's pretty much playing the whole thing live already - if you want an idea of it, check out the two Seattle shows posted on his official site.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 7 July 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

man tigerbeat 6 sucks.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 7 July 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Massively late and overdue announcement, but you can see the "Kill Me" video here. Starring none other than ILM's own Tom Breihan!

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this the 8mm one? I'll take a look right now!

Dial Rat For Terror (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't get it to work!
