and I have for over a week.
So there.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck! I need this! And I didn't even know this thread was you!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had it for over a month bee-yatch (it's really great)

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it...really great? As in the WHOLE album this time?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing on it has really grabbed me yet, but I haven't really sat down with it. I like "Miss Teen Wordpower" so far.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I need this too. Very badly.

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the track they put up on the Matador website.

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

who are they?

Jay K (Jay K), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

They are a band.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want it. That The Laws Have Changed song is brilliant.

zilverberg.tk (zilverberg.tk), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, though, in a few months who will care. Everyone who wants one will have one. And it won't sound any less sweet in August than it does today.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

And if it makes any of you feel any better, I still don't have Elephant, even though I've been a White Stripes fan since De Stjil.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the new one is much better as a whole. They all grab me (but there's no "Letter From An Occupant").

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto to that - the new one holds me more throughout than the last one, but there's nothing I'm like 'ohmigod I have to play that again and again right now' ie. no "letter from an occupant"

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"It's Only Divine Right" continues to kick my ass again and again.

Also SEARCH: the single they put out in the U.K. about six months ago of "Letter from an Occupant" with an astonishingly great cover of the Donner Party's "When I Was a Baby" on the B-side.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Blount is OTM.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had this for a while but still haven't gotten around to listening to it. I know that they ain't my bag.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had for about three weeks.
It's consistent, with three or four tracks that completely floor me.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It's great; I'm eminently glad that Bejar came back into the fold for a few songs.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the whole Electric Version album - I'm impressed by how the quality level hasn't dropped one bit since Mass Romantic. I wonder how long they can keep this up.

In addition to the single that Douglas mentions, they also recorded a very fun (and faithful) cover of Toronto's "Your Daddy Don't Know" with Neko Case on lead vocal for some soundtrack, and it is really worth tracking down on your favorite p2p.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Also very worth tracking down, if you haven't yet, are the two Zumpano albums, Look What The Rookie Did('94) and Goin' Through Changes('96), both on Sub Pop. This was Carl Newman's first band, and they're just as good, if not better, than New Porn.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I the only person who thinks EV is sorta dull compared to the last one? There are like 3 songs (#s 2, 8, and 10) that are really really good but everything else is just okay. Just seems to me like they had more fun last time...things aren't as loose, I guess, anymore.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

If you know anything about Carl Newman, nothing is ever loose in his studio.

I don't know, Raymond. Sounds about the same as the first one to me, I think it is about the same pop hooks-to-fun vibe ratio.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ironically - and this sort of thing is really embarrassing after posting something like I did this morning - a replay of the record, all the way through for the first time in something like a week revealed that it's a lot better than I thought. But I still prefer the first one.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y, I will take your copy off your hands.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
Now that the official release has come, any new thoughts?

I'm loving it, esp. 'Miss Teen Wordpower', 'All For Swinging You Around', and 'the Laws Have Changed'. Definitely a key album.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 8 May 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know. I'm more ambivalent than ever, and my review is due tomorrow.
One the one hand, yeah, there are some good songs, no raging your-new-favourite-song-ever-before-the-second-chorus-even but ah, y'know, consistent-ish.
I don't know, I mean, the Bejar songs are Bejar songs. Like, he's going, "yup, it's me."
And it's cool to hear Neko sing pop, cuz she's got a great pop voice.
But, I mean, it's okay. I wouldn't say key, but probably recommendable.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

new A Norther Chorus is so yummy I haven't gotten to New Pronographers yet.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I gave that one a cursory listen, but was way impressed with the Simply Saucer reissue. That's some cool-ass shit.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

What's on the Simply Saucer re-issue? any stuff that wasn't on the vinyl?

pauls00, Thursday, 8 May 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, there's the album, and then another 8 or so tracks of demos and live stuff, plus the two sides of their 7" (which the liner notes say have never been available on CD before).

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 8 May 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

damn, one more thing i need to buy.

pauls00, Thursday, 8 May 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)
