Open air Massive Attack is a strange concept, given the glorious claustrophobia of their best work.

I agree, it will be strange.... it's long overdue, this gig - about time the band gave something back to Bristol after years and years of turning down this kind of gig.

They're playing Creamfields just before, too - but that sounds like an event best avoided - commercial crap.

its gonna be WEIRD - a bunch of sessionists playing encore of Unfinished Sympathy and what about all the other hits? surely 3D does not expect to perform primarily new material live, altho i figure Horace Andy and Sinead is expected to be there at least, and they'd better have some awesome visuals to go with the music

this reminds me i once blagged a ticket to see them at London Arena....but i didnt go! i couldnt persuade anyone else to come with at the time, and didnt fancy it on my own...madness or what?! i've always wondered what they were like live at various phases of their career

i never liked them live. too much like dee-jay's. no live atmosphere. they are in their own cosmos too far away from the public. no real interaction between them and the public at both concerts i attended. maybe outdoors it is a total different thing though...

i'd love to see massive attack live. i've heard mixed things about them. Alex in NYC is correct, their music may be a bit too brooding for an open-air gig. or it could be beautiful, who knows?

stevem - won't be sessionists - all the band are the musicians from the recording sessions - the 'invisible' Massive blokes - been present since Blue Lines.... nice bunch of blokes they are (Tim and Bob also known as The Insects - these are the musical backbone of the band really).

what about vocalists tho? well there's a review on NME of their Sydney show and it didnt sound too bad at all to be fair

it'll be stoner paradise.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

....I reckon as Liz Fraser now lives in Bristol, there could be a few surprise guest vocalists... but I can't see Shara Nelson appearing, too, mores the pity.
