SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Pearl Jam?

hstencil, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

too mopey

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Pearl Jam?!?!?!?!?! Pearl Jam doesn't even have a keyboard player! Don't besmirch the legacy of the mighty Deep Purple like that again, hstencil!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

there is none. part of what's wrong with the world today.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

exactly

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you need

- A moody arrogant guitarist who doesn't even like rock music
- A fucking kick-ass drummer (GAH! I just realized I forgot to put Paice on that favorite drummers thread)
- Radical personnel/sound shifts
- Fixation with speed/travel
- Totemic live album recorded in Japan

These are tough criteria!!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

can't be Queens Of The Stone Age. They're the Blue Oyster Cult of the 21st century.

hey, how about Guns'n'Roses?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

-Buckethead for sure
-the new guy used to be in Primus. Probably good.
-natch
-Rocket QUEEEEN!
-could easily be on its way

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is seriously depressing the hell out of me. Well, I'm already depressed, but talk about sealing the deal! I mean, it's true--there is no new Deep Purple.

s woods, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Xanax to thread

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"Can we have everything louder than everything else?"

Best stage patter evah!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Sightings?

steve k (http://go.to/stevek) (stevek10), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

can't be Queens Of The Stone Age. They're the Blue Oyster Cult of the 21st century.

No way dude!! Blue Oyster Cult were the Television of Heavy Metal, and QOTSA most surely aren't the Nappy Roots of Stoner Rock, so that don't work out!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, no way!! It totally fits! Dude!!!!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue Oyster Cult were the Patti Smith Group of heavy metal.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

If I were to take some time and try and figure this conundrum out, I wouldn't be looking in rock (guitars and all that) for the 21st century Deep Purple, but probably in techno. Aren't those riffs (and tones) in "Highway Star" and "Smoke on the Water" fairly instrumental in the development of techno? Problem is, I wouldn't know where to begin looking. Leftfield?

s woods, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Josh is Buck, Nick Is Eric (and a hell of a lot better than Eric...gah!) it FITS. Stop with your tomfoolery and acknowledge, people! ACKNOWLEDGE!!!!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue Oyster Cult were the Rock Bottom Remainders of heavy metal.

s woods, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"Blue Oyster Cult were the Patti Smith Group of heavy metal." Talk about an insult.

rumpelstiltskin, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

To Blue Oyster Cult or the Patti Smith Group?

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been singing "Highway Star" to myself for about an hour now. Cool. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Scott's at least thinking - you can't answer this question by picking someone who's replicating a sound from 30 years ago because that's not what DP did.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue Oyster Cult were the Patti Smith Group of heavy metal.

Horses is the reason I used to get Blue Oyster Cult and Television mixed up!

Also, Anthony: if QOTSA were BOC, who would Rob Halford be? We'd have to go back in time and get Perry Como or someone to sing about c-c-c-c-cocaine on the second BOC album and you know, some forces are just not to be meddled with!

(tho I admit it'd be worth it to get Ringo- or would it be Paul?- to drum for them. Damn, I guess you're right.)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm...electronica with heavy riffs. who's done a live album?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

but...dude! It just works!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

so when will they get a new singer then dude, huh?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

there are some add n to x songs that remind me of deep purple. same maniacal tempo. There was one other group whose video i saw once and they reminded me of D.P. too, cuz they had these insane keyboard runs: green nuns of the revolution? is that right? I could be wrong on the name cuz it's been years, but i really liked that one song.

scott seward, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

but...dude! It just works!

Dude, no. Just let go, dude, just let go.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue Oyster Cult were the Television of Heavy Metal
That's funny, because I listened to 'Agents of Fortune', and came to the conclusion that they were the Boomtown Rats of heavy metal. ;)

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, can you even begin to imagine how cool Live Aid would have been if it had been organised by Eric Bloom????
