i was listening to nada surf's song "blonde on blonde," a dropdead gorgeous ode to walking around nyc in the rain with dylan in your headphones, and trying to think of other songs that are simply a mash note to a favorite album.

Pavement's "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence" is about R.E.M.'s Reckoning.

Monster Magnet's epic "Spine of God", while not about a whole album, contains the great lines "bought another copy of Fragile" and "bought another copy of Zoso".

The key thing being that "another" implying that the narrator has owned copies previously at various points in his life and lost them due to either stoned misplacement or truck for pocket change.

wichita, ks, early 90s, local bar band called Room Full of Walters had a song called "Reading Kipling" and I still remember the line "dance to meat is murder and the smiths make it so sad / spend the day doing nothing makes the bureaucrats mad" haha, good times (bad lyrics).

Terror Squad's "Burn disco burn" has a whole heap of 80s thrash metal albums being namedropped. It's quite hilarious. Of course, that was basically an anti-disco song, not so much a song about a particular album.

that recent 70s/80s track by nightmares on Wax has a reference to 'new boots and panties'

does anyone else love this track?

It's the only reason I haven't flogged that album on eBay, Robin.

Can't believe we haven't mentioned Stephen Malkmus's "Jenny & the Ess-Dog" for referencing "Brothers In Arms".

"sloan's "the marquee & the moon" is totally about a bar from their hometown called the marquee but idunno where they pull the 'moon' from..."

Possibly from Television's "Marquee Moon."

In the Dismemberment Plan's "Ellen and Ben," One line goes "I had stopped by, 'cuz Ellen had my copy of 'Nebraska'." A fleeting reference, but still.

A U2 song (I think "Angel of Harlem") name-checks (or name-drops) Coltrane's A Love Supreme.
TMBG's "Twisting" mentions a dB's Record and a Young Fresh Fellows tape.
