Hustle vs. Macarena vs. Electric Slide vs. Da Dip!

I was thinking this today because quite possibly Da Dip is like the best dance craze track ever I think, because it's the only authentic hip-hop dance craze track, unless I'm missing something major.

The "you put mine and i put yours and we put and we put and we put" bit is as deliciously erotic as any house break ever.

Er... ever heard of "The Smurf"?

Anyway, correct answer is "The Hokie Pokie".

"The Steve Martin"!

the MC Luscious version of Da Dip is better than the Freak Nasty one. (in my very own humble opinion laugh out loud.)

Metropole. Periphery. Cha Cha Dance.

I'm a big Hank Ballard fan, so I have to mention the twist, which he originated. There were some other good twist records by the Isleys - and Jerry Lee Lewis did Whole Lotta Twistin' Goin' On! And the Marcels did Merry Twistmas, as cashinny a record as there has ever been.

Johnny Otis did 'Three Girls Named Molly, Doing The Hully Gully' and 'Willie Did The Cha Cha' as well as the Hand Jive stuff. Rufus Thomas gave us 'Can Your Monkey Do The Dog' and 'Do The Funky Chicken' and 'Do The Funky Penguin'(!), as well as 'Walking The Dog'. The best Lambada record was by Cutty Ranks & Wayne Wonder.

I think all dance craze records should, by law, feature the couplet "It's the new sensation / That's sweepin' 'cross the nation."

Some other fine dance craze records, more or less (i.e. they are mostly would-be crazes):
Do The Trouser Press - Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band
Doin' The Mustang - Don Bryant
Le Freak - Chic
Limbo (Baby Limbo) - John Cooper-Clarke
Can Your Pussy Do The Dog? - Cramps
The Majestic - Dion & the Belmonts
The Wobble (and some others, but that's the best name) - Dyke & the Blazers
The Frog - Sir Guy
Frog Hop - Earl Hooker
The Dog - Junior and the Classics
The Duck - Jackie Lee
The Masochism Tango - Tom Lehrer
Olive Learned To Popeye - Scotty McKay
The Bounce - The Olympics
Jump, Jive An' Wail - Louis Prima
Do The Mutilation - Rezillos
I Wanna Do The Jerk - Ronnie & the Pimona Casuals
Do the Strand - Roxy Music
Can You Waddle? - Spartans
Do The Standing Still - The Table
The Wallop - The Tabs
Do The Whop - Trouble Funk
The Monster Twist - Tyrone Asaurus

Martin either you are a genius or you have a special "dance craze" category in your database and are very scary.

Or you just searched on "the".

2 of 3, near enough. I record 'themes' against tunes, because occasionally I like to do themed C90 comps. 'Dances' is a category, so it's the work of a second to bring that up, then select the ones that are more or less dance craze tracks.

Do The Standing Still - The Table

?!

Frog Hop - Earl Hooker

Fucking great tune.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Do The Standing Still was a punk ironic dance craze record. And Earl Hooker is underappreciated generally, I think.

My first job was at Arby's and how i got through the day of making sandwiches was singing "I put the beef up on the bun – when I dip you dip it's done" and other variants on Da Dip.

Sheesh, I think every post I've made today has been about a job I had.
