Identify this band: They suck.

D@ra is going crazy trying to remember their name, because this is the band that Ron Asheton always gets the Strokes mixed up with.

They are from NYC, (or say that they are from NYC) they supported J.Mascis on tour in the UK a year or two ago. They signed to a major label about the same time as the Strokes.

We think their name is a phrase, possibly related to feet, or to someone's name.

Already discounted:
Jonathan Fire*Eater/The Walkmen
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
ARE Weapons

Please help... this is driving us NUTS!!!

Oh god, I bet I know this...the J Mascis clue is stirring something...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Any more clues, Kate?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Are they more of a Strokes wannabe or a Dinosaur Jr wannabe?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

D@ra, is it The Beatings or Creeper Lagoon? Those are the only two bands I can find that supported J.Mascis on tour recently...

kate, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Toes??? Not from NYC.
Star Spangles???Not touring as long as two years ago.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beatings are from London.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

There was also some totally libellous story about the singer of said band missing the Brixton Academy show because he was so drunk that he passed out in an alley and couldn't find the venue. Any of this ringing any bells?

kate, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Which rules out Creeper Lagoon because they were booked to play the Shepherds Bush Empire, not the Brixton Academy. But that's who supported on the tour that Ron was on ... ???

kate, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently Trail Of Dead supported J a few times, but it's not them, is it?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i wondered about them, they're one of those bands arent they. but they're texan?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Y, from Austin. But they signed to a major and they wear skinny ties.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not Trail of Dead. Already asked her...

kate, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The Locust?

Brandon Gentry (Brandon Gentry), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

D@ra has identified the band - it's Creeper Lagoon. Venue confusion aside. She says she was thinking of shoes, hence the creeper bit.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

A ha ha hah ha.

But, erm, they're from San Francisco, not NYC!

However, it does make sense, as yes, I do have one of their records. Heh heh, I know some very unsalubrious stories about Sharky, so, erm, yeah, it makes sense...

kate, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I know some very unsalubrious stories about Sharky

You know stories about everyone. but you never tell. :(

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

RA calls them Creepy Lagoon, apparently.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

You are confusing me with Suzy. I don't know stories about anyone... oh wait, sometimes I do. ;-)

Creepy Lagoon! Hah hah hah! That makes it even funnier that he thinks they're The Strokes. Or The Strokes are them. Or was it the Bloody Band?

kate, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot consult the D@racle right now, she has gone out to buy an A-Z as a souvenir, and might head to Chelsea if her feelings of post-pizza pukiness abate somewhat. Mine certainly haven't.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

my friend says the smoking popes sound like the strokes and are from nyc...i can not confirm any of this.

ddb, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The Smoking Popes are from Illinois, and they sound like the Strokes only in that "I'd never have thought of that, but now that you mention it I guess I can see it" kind of way.

Why exactly are Creeper Lagoon suddenly vaulting back into public consciousness? Three or four years ago they were getting written up with USA as "the new Pavements" -- then they disappeared, and here they are again.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Creeper Lagoon got a lot of positive press for the Dust Brothers-produced I Become Small And Go in 1998, then spent way too long working on their major label debut for Dreamworks. When Take Back The Universe And Give Me Yesterday finally came out in 2001, all of their earlier buzz had disappeared, and the album tanked, at which point everyone but Sharky left the band. The new incarnation of Creeper Lagoon came out with an EP on Arena Rock this past winter, which may explain why people have started talking about them again. (Personally, it seems lame to me to Sharky is still using the Creeper Lagoon name. Ian Sefchick was an equal partner in the formation of the band's sound, so it's kind of misleading to keep Creeper Lagoon going without him.)

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The Smoking Popes can't suck. I heard their version of Willie Wonka's "Pure Imagination" and it r0X0r!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Why exactly are Creeper Lagoon suddenly vaulting back into public consciousness?

Is *vaulting* the correct word? I've never met anyone who's liked them, btw, and I live in SF.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe we'll see a USA resurrection now. (NB this would probably not be a good thing, though their first EP was fairly nice and they still have one of the best local-color songs I've ever heard, about driving down Ashland in Chicago.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Is *vaulting* the correct word? I've never met anyone who's liked them, btw, and I live in SF. "

I'm also from SF - I don't know anyone who doesn't consider them a really bad joke. And the only person I've ever met who liked them lived in LA (one of the guys from Possum Dixon), which is where they truly belong. Awful. I saw them live and they blatantly bit two separate Cars riffs in one song.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I love both Creeper Lagon albums
