This is the thread where those of us who remember three years ago and the dominance of Travis and Coldplay thank The White Stripes for being so fucking great

Remember 2000/ 2001? Coldplay, The Stereophonics and Travis were everywhere. They were the major league bands - souless, sexless and utterly boring. Three years ago I never thought there would be another band to be obsessed about the way I had been about Suede or The Smiths or Pulp... and then come The White Stripes who are now on the verge of being huuuuuuge and are everything a great band should be: sexy, exciting, mysterious and romantic. After seeing them live for the second time last week I can't tell you how damn cool Jack White is - slightly androgynous, excitable and kinda funny. Meg meanwhile is girl-next-door cute.

In the perfect world every song would sound like You're Pretty Good Looking (for a girl) and shit like Yellow would never be heard again. Ever. With The White Stripes around how much longer can major league stadium crap keep pulling in the crowds?

Calum, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

remember black people, calum?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the white stripes are every bit as serious as the stereophonic, marginally edging them out for 'fellin love with a girl' and that one of the new record with holly golightly.

on another subject, the singer from hot hot heat even looks like rick witter.

matthew james (matthew james), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone remember laughter?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Coldplay are more dominant now than ever, and it strikes me the same people buying AROBTH are buying Elephant too...

i think i like White Stripes videos more than the music, but its all good. i just wish Jack White would pump some iron so he could go and kick Ryan Adams' stupid ass for dissing him for complaining about Adams' cover versions

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

that fight would be wonderful. jackie white would start to get battered, run off and say he was too mature for fighting.

matthew james (matthew james), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

what do you mean 'and then came the white stripes'? their first record came out in '99

schnellschnell, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh but i want Jack to win cos he is so gifted

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and they're shit

schnellschnell, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

actually Meg could take on Ryan with her mighty bazooka joes

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the thread where we sing the praises of the smell of catshit and remember that we don't have to smell dogshit any more!

kate, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

meg white looks like a sack of potatoes.

matthew james (matthew james), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

oh,a nd what were you listenign to three years ago, calum?

matthew james (matthew james), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, yeah I know when they started. But I was talking about when they began to get big. Besides I only got into them in 2001 when White Blood Cells came out. Since then I've discovered the fabbest most loveable band in aaaaaaaages! And Meg White is cute.

Calum, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

she has large breasts doesn't she?

ss, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Moderator: delete my brain, please. Oh wait, this thread has done it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

And Meg White is cute.

No matter how many times people say it, it doesn't get any truer. This is the indie rock Big Lie.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE TITS

, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Meg Ryan?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

They're really not good and Meg White is not cute, either... does this post conclude this thread?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

she has REALLY large breasts doesn't she calum?

ss, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

meg white is cuter than anyone on the internet who says she isnt cute

minna (minna), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but how nice to see the one time psuedo-liberals on ILM who bitch about me and my "Alison Moyet is so large I bet her hygiene problems are astronomical" type threads have allowed this to degenerate into a discussion on Meg White's appearance and her breats in particular...

Calum, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

meg white is cuter than anyone on the internet who says she isnt cute
-- minna (girl_thursda...), April 16th, 2003.

and how did we come to this conclusion?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

THOROUGH RESEARCH

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, taken on board, but they're still pretty rotten as a band and that's what we're supposed to be talking about isn't it

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

she has massive breasts DO YOU SEE?

ss, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

what's that got to do with the band?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember the dreadful period Calum mentions, every new hype seemed worse than the last. But the White Stripes never impressed me as bringing any quality to the overhype-era.
And the girl is downright ugly.

The one new band I'm grateful to for finally showing there IS hope after Mansun is: Interpol.

Tijn, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

who's better at dirty stripped-down bluesy rawk n' roll right now Dave Stelfox?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

saying something is shit (or good) without giving a good reason should be punishable by death incidentally, and that goes for me too

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i'm not sure. morrissey never backs himself up but is unreasonable with a good turn of phrase.

matthew james (matthew james), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Interpol = Joy Division but crap and no suicide... booooring.

Calum, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Shut up Calum. Things were better back then.

Grow up and learn to appreciate mellow music.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

White Stripes are 99 per cent image and 1 per cent "music"

They are at least better than ALL R&B or hip-hop though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

JSBX, billy childish and mick collins to name but a few were doing exactly the same thing but with more zest and years before the whites stripes started. but they didn't have red or white clothes. or a large breasted drummer.

schnellschnell, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Go suck on a sheep's knob Gier you twat. Things most certainly were not better with your musical 'greats' of Travis and Coldplay (Geir thinks the Sex Pistols were shit but Chris Martin, The Lightning Seeds and Fran Healy are geniuses - snark!). I love mellow music - Dog Man Star is my fave album of all time and you, sir, are a twat.

Calum, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dog Man Star" isn't particularly mellow. Too many overdrive guitars and too much "desperate" vocals.

A great album, but "Coming Up" is way better anyway.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm talking about NOW tho

sure White Stripes do nothing new musically - hence the need for strong image and attitude

i dont think the likes of JSBX and Childish, even Led Zep, are THAT far ahead of the Stripes for that debauched energy anyway

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Calum, abusing Geir is futile and immature...it doesnt matter what you say he will come back at you with a polite and matter-of-fact 'correction' - you've gotta love it

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

JSBX, billy childish and mick collins to name but a few were doing exactly the same thing but with more zest and years before the whites
stripes started. but they didn't have red or white clothes. or a large breasted drummer.

I beg to differ

Calum, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

calum actually posted a serious thread and you just bitch around.

la, Friday, 18 April 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

'serious'

Personally I don't think that the White Stripes are any great 'advance' on Travis or Coldplay, but who wants to be told to go suck a goat's dick or whatever, so best to keep schtum, yes?

Andrew L (Andrew L), Friday, 18 April 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

well, compared to some other threads by him it definitely is serious. in my opinion the white stripes are an amazing band that really deserve their success. i mean...isn´t it great that even bands that don´t lack talent can become successful

la, Friday, 18 April 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

'talent' is a funny concept.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 April 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

What "talent" exactly do White Stripes have other than talent for colouring their hair black and dressing in red and white?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

do you think Jackson Pollack and Andy Warhol were talented Geir?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Musically, judging from his productions, Andy Warhol didn't seem very talented. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe thats not a good example anyway....but while you may not consider the Sex Pistols to have been remotely talented, this does not detract from the fact that a lot of people think 'never mind the bollocks' is a brilliant album. and you saying its not brilliant isnt going to change that.

a more interesting debate would be why the White Stripes might be considered better than Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and how the fact White Stripes have been so successful is surely down to their image and well timed press hype rather than the music itself, as fine as the music is.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

where DOES Geir stand on Stipes vs. Blues Explosion?

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

but andy warhol influenced the velvet underground and they were gorgeous

la, Friday, 18 April 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

No, they weren't. They were overrated.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

what art form was it then - quilting?

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You miss my irony, LCE. There's was nothing vague about the racisim in it. The implied racisim is in Geir, which others have pointed out before -- and I do so now.

jm (jtm), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME PPL DO NOT TAKE THE BAIT!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The word music comes from ancient Greece, and in ancient cultures, music means melodies. Melodies have different guises, some Eastern Cultures have melodies that are more melodically advanced and less harmonically advanced, for instance, but there are always melodies in music.

African cultures don't even have a name for music. They have a name for "dancing" though, which is, to them, the same thing as the noises they make for dancing to them.

I am not ranking art forms here, just noting the fact that African "music" is an altogether different art form than music, which is invented in Europe or Asia, and which must contain melodies to be considered music.

Those who invented the word "music" deserve to have kind of a veto over what is supposed to be called "music" or not.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Note that Northern Africa definitely has a music tradition though. Rai music has melodies and is definitely music.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

what's in a name?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What is in a name is the expectation that this is actually a tradition that should be saved and kept alive by composing new music within that style all the time.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually.

matt riedl (veal), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

That one is actually the most overrated of the Pet Shop Boys albums. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

very well President Hongro, but we need a catchy name for all the non-melodic organised soundart out there. your suggestions?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

or whether I should just strip down, smear myself with zebra blood and red mud and scream in lustful spasms of joy as the Loa rides my spirit into enlightenment.

That sounds like a lot of fun to me. I'd do that if I were you. In fact, I think I'll go and do that right now.

Dan I., Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand why more people aren't completely bored with the White Stripes at this point. De stijl and White Blood Cells were nice enough albums, but there's just not enough there for anyone to be interested in getting in line for another very slight variation on the last two helpings. People excited by this album just seem embarassingly behind the curve.
