This is the thread where those of us who remember three years ago and the dominance of Travis and Coldplay thank The White Stripes for being so fucking great

Remember 2000/ 2001? Coldplay, The Stereophonics and Travis were everywhere. They were the major league bands - souless, sexless and utterly boring. Three years ago I never thought there would be another band to be obsessed about the way I had been about Suede or The Smiths or Pulp... and then come The White Stripes who are now on the verge of being huuuuuuge and are everything a great band should be: sexy, exciting, mysterious and romantic. After seeing them live for the second time last week I can't tell you how damn cool Jack White is - slightly androgynous, excitable and kinda funny. Meg meanwhile is girl-next-door cute.

In the perfect world every song would sound like You're Pretty Good Looking (for a girl) and shit like Yellow would never be heard again. Ever. With The White Stripes around how much longer can major league stadium crap keep pulling in the crowds?

I remember the dreadful period Calum mentions, every new hype seemed worse than the last. But the White Stripes never impressed me as bringing any quality to the overhype-era.
And the girl is downright ugly.

The one new band I'm grateful to for finally showing there IS hope after Mansun is: Interpol.

maybe thats not a good example anyway....but while you may not consider the Sex Pistols to have been remotely talented, this does not detract from the fact that a lot of people think 'never mind the bollocks' is a brilliant album. and you saying its not brilliant isnt going to change that.

a more interesting debate would be why the White Stripes might be considered better than Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and how the fact White Stripes have been so successful is surely down to their image and well timed press hype rather than the music itself, as fine as the music is.

The word music comes from ancient Greece, and in ancient cultures, music means melodies. Melodies have different guises, some Eastern Cultures have melodies that are more melodically advanced and less harmonically advanced, for instance, but there are always melodies in music.

African cultures don't even have a name for music. They have a name for "dancing" though, which is, to them, the same thing as the noises they make for dancing to them.

I am not ranking art forms here, just noting the fact that African "music" is an altogether different art form than music, which is invented in Europe or Asia, and which must contain melodies to be considered music.

Those who invented the word "music" deserve to have kind of a veto over what is supposed to be called "music" or not.

I don't understand why more people aren't completely bored with the White Stripes at this point. De stijl and White Blood Cells were nice enough albums, but there's just not enough there for anyone to be interested in getting in line for another very slight variation on the last two helpings. People excited by this album just seem embarassingly behind the curve.
