my god. they owe something to their countrymen! a week on the rubble of wembley stadium! that would be even more metal than a tour of communist states.

matthew james (matthew james), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

mei (mei), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I was even more stunned to see that Motorhead is playing with High on Fire and the Dwarves at the Avalon Ballroom here in SF later in the month.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Do not mock the DIO please!

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay K (Jay K), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love to see a supply pile of all of the alchohol and narcotics that the crowd at MSG will intake before, during and after this show. I would imagine it would be quite impressive lot.

earlnash, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy fuck, finally something going on at the Garden that I can support. Even Dio, honour the holy diver, for fuck's sake.

Are the tickets even on sale yet? If any of my wussy ass friends would be willing to go, I'd totally go. I have to convince someone. My friends are so totally weak though. I should hold out my cards until something really, really, REALLY amazing comes to town and force them to go to that.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 April 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Motorhead a couple years ago with REO Speedealer and Fu Manchu; they were great! Dio was just playing with like Tesla or Y&T or something around here not too long ago. If they added King Diamond to this bill I might think about flying to New York for it.

Kris (aqueduct), Thursday, 17 April 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally---- Alex ---------- It seems kind of
................
You could go together.

Couldn't you?

You're both enthusiastic about it. You have
semi-similar interests. You're both intelligent.
You both wear glasses. You joke around sometimes.
He felt comfortable talking about hurting you.
And it was all in fun. You could make it into
a silly, romantic thing.

I hope I don't ruin it by this.

StanleyClarke, Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I officially deem the previous post 'creepy.'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

He felt comfortable talking about hurting you.

?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't wear glasses.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, aren't you married or something? Didn't I hear that rumor?

Not that I'm against the idea of an ILM Iron Maiden lurv connection. It sounds great in theory. But I do suspect the 3Dshroom up there has been sampling his own wares a little too often lately.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I am indeed happily married. What's your point? Stanley Clarke -- apart from being a crap jazzbo musician -- isn't really someone I'm taking seriously.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I guess that renders this thread officially dead and creepy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally... Alex... It seems kind of................You could go together.
Back off my woman, Alex.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

(*creepiness factor increased x5*)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel comfortable talking about hurting Alex. If that's okay with him. Alex, do you mind if break your index finger? For kicks, I mean?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Where on earth is this thread going?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Riiiight down the crapper.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping we could virtually beat up Alex to shift the focus away from Ally. Poor girl.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Alex. I haven't slept much.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I DO NOT ADVOCATE THIS THREAD. I AM STICKING PINS IN MY VOODOO DOLL AGAINST ALL OF YOU RIGHT NOW, DO YOU FEEL THE PAIN?

I think he was thinking you were someone else, Alex. Someone with glasses who threatened me. Quite possibly my ex-fiance, actually. I really don't see the resemblance between the two of you, but maybe I'm missing something?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I was just trying to help. None of us want icky things to happen to our Ally.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I don't see how breaking Alex's index finger helps me any.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ow! STOP IT ALLY! OOWWWW!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Stop flirting with me, fool.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway... this sounds amazing:

Motorhead is playing with High on Fire and the Dwarves

When are Hawkwind with Lemmy on bass playing at MSG?

die9o (dhadis), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
So, who is going to this show? I have tix in hand (and good ones too, dammit....floor seats!) Any other ILM'ers going to show their alleigance to true metal?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 July 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, I just re-read this thread and now realize why I abandoned it in the first place.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 July 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

He felt comfortable talking about hurting you. is one of the better 'excuse me miss's I've seen.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 10 July 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'm going to the LA area show if that helps.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 July 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'm GOING TO THIS SHOW TONIGHT! FLOOR SEATS, NO LESS! HOORAY POUR MOI!

Anyone else going? If so, I'll be the jerk in the Killing Joke t-shirt (naturally).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Send 'em home to the UK"

No! You wanted the fuckin' things, now you can get out there and feed them and brush them - and you clean their cage out while you're at it too, 'cos it's starting to fuckin' stink!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going. Don't know where my tickets are, but I can't wait. I saw Dio at MSG in 86, with Accept opening...Night of the Midget Frontmen.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Made it up to the Garden for the show. Floor seats, 7th row! Lots of meatnecked mooks in fading t-shirts, but a very happy, friendly crowd all the same. First up? Motorhead (What's this?????? MOTORHEAD ARE ON BEFORE DIO?????). No frills, naturally, apart from a big hanging backdrop of the cover of their latest (??) album, HAMMERED, in the background (I guess they weren't allowed to haul the big bomber lighting rig on this tour). Strutted out, plugged in and blew a fuckin' hole in the back of the
auditorium.....living up to their credo: EVERYTHING LOUDER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE. Fucking IMMEASURABLY loud....I'm sure they could hear it in New Jersey. Phil Campbell on guitar (now in the band for 18 years?!?!?!) and Rickey Dee (ex of Dokken, I believe.....much to his considerable discredit) on drums. Lemmy, looking a big older, but still the veritable Jesus of Cool. Mixed bag of tracks for a relatively brief set, including: "Killed By Death," "No Class," "R.A.M.O.N.E.S", "Metropolis," "Sacrifice," and inevitable "Ace of Spades," and closing with a rousing sprint through "Overkill". (What? No "Motorhead"?). Highlight of the set, Lemmy chastizing the crowd for not responding approvingly enough to his invokation of Joey and DeeDee Ramone. Bless'im.

Next up? Dio, apparently, prompting my friend Rob & m'self to furiously scurry out of the auditorium not only to secure beers for ourselves, but as a pointed sign of disrespect to the diminutive b-list'er hobgoblin. I didn't mind the odd Ronnie James Dio-era Sabbath track (notably "Mob Rules"), but his solo career is fraught with so many moments of pompous ridiculousity that I well up with shame knowing I was in attendance for this performance. We stayed out in the corridors downing many expensive beers and fraternizing with the
metal congniscenti for the entirety of Dio's set, and that was no accident. The hightliht of this portion: right during "Rainbow in the Dark" (there's no mistaking that irritating synth riff), some Garden Security Gents employed some severely entertaining "uneccesary roughness" on some hapless, pie-eyed rowdyboy in a tye-dye shirt. Salut!

Next up? The main event! Maiden take the stage like wolfpack of Gestapo after snorting a swastika of high grade cocaine off Eva Braun's comely buttocks. "Woe to you oh earth and sea....." and the place fucking explodes. Steve Harris shoving the business end of his bass at us like barrell of an M-16, Bruce Dickinson leaping about like some fleet-footed hobbit on an apparently very hot floor. All three guitarists noodling away (Why oh Why is Janick Geers still in the picture? His ceaseless gymnastics really don't fit the proceedings at all). Adrian Smith seems to be boasting a large Freemasons patch on his leather waistcoat. Curious, that.

Basically a greatest hits set (with only a solitary new track played,
mercifully). "Number of the Beast," "The Trooper," "Die With Your Boots On," "Hallowed Be The Name", "Revelations", "The Clansmen", "The Clairvoyant", "Iron Maiden," "Two Minutes to Midnight" and the inevitable "Run To the Hills". I'm sure I'm forgetting one track or another, but you get the picture. No big omissions (though I'd quite like to have heard "Sanctuary," "Running Free", "Aces High" and "Wasted Years", personally).

Multiple backdrops depicting various Derek Riggs covers of Eddie in all his grim finery make the rounds. During "Iron Maiden," a hilarious giant Eddie emerges, giggling maniacally as his head pops open and brain is lowered in full, gloriously over the top Spinal Tap stylee.

Anyway, there you have a it. A splendid time had by all.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, brilliant. Let's see how this is all still holding together in a few weeks when I catch 'em. No "Wasted Years," though? Dang it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 July 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The new track is tolerable, which is more than I can say for "The Clansman." They shouldn't make Dickinson sing stuff he wasn't around to veto in the studio. That slot in the set could have been given to "Aces High," "Powerslave," "Can I Play With Madness"...just about anything, really.

I wasn't that displeased with Dio's set, except for the fucking drum solo. He played the four songs I wanted to hear, and a few other songs I don't care about.

Motorhead were painfully loud, and a little sloppy to start, but generally as great as always. I saw them last year on that tour with REO Speedealer and whoever else, and they were just as good in the arena as in the club.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 31 July 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

They shouldn't make Dickinson sing stuff he wasn't around to veto in the studio.

Had this same discussion last night with my friend Rob. Maiden played "The Clansman" the last time around as well (2000?). I think the prevailing argument is that whomever's out front, at the end of the day it's Steve Harris' band, not Dickinson's (nor Blaze's nor Paul Di'Anno's, etc.). Thus, since Steve wrote it, in the set list it goes...I could live without it as well, but better "The Clansman" than "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" any day.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 31 July 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

MTV.com agrees.....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 31 July 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Weiderhorn, still flying the flag for metal, I see. At least he's stuck to his guns.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
Saw show. Much rock. More later. Sleep now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 August 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

And I didn't have enough sleep, but anyway: set list and experience as Alex described it (missing songs from his rundown: "The Wickerman," "Wildest Dreams" (the sole newie) and "Fear of the Dark"), Janick Gers should be given a Nerf guitar, the cameraman for the venue didn't seem to realize that Steve Harris was actually the bandleader among the musicians, Bruce was all over the goddamn stage, the man needs no workout routine. RAWK. My coworker/friend Tom was hoarse by the end of it all. Crowd was an interesting SoCal mix, I'd say a good third of the folks were Chicano, so there goes another stereotype about who is 'supposed' to like Iron Maiden and who isn't. Most incongruous T-shirts on display -- GG Allin, Bauhaus, the Velvet Underground, and the one guy wtih the Phil Lesh tour shirt from last shirt who I suspect was providing the marijuana. Classic heavy metal parking lot experiences, hilarious random comments from random people (eg, "Dude, fucking EDDIE man!"), half the crowd had to have been under 25! And much to my delight I did catch at least one full on emo kid (horn rimmed glasses, too tight sweater, heart-shaped cloth backpack). Why the fuck he wasn't eaten alive by some of the concertgoers still bemuses me. Oh yes, plenty of tattoos, including the guy who had the entire cover of The Number of the Beast on his back (why that one? if you're going to go insanely all out, Somewhere in Time or nothing).

The downside of the evening was that due to the massive crush of people getting in we missed all of Motorhead (and worse, we could hear the damn set as we were stuck outside!) but were treated to all of Dio. His keyboardist was a tool and having both a drum solo *and* a synth/guitar solo was a crime, but he's still not hiding the thinning up top so points there, and for all the prancing was reasonably low key and schticky for his song intros, like an old uncle hosting a family reunion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 August 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Janick Gers should be given a Nerf guitar,

Agreed. And the guitar he is currently using should be confiscated from him and then used to bludgeon him into non-twirly-dancing submission.

f you're going to go insanely all out, Somewhere in Time or nothing

Wha???? Derek Riggs' lamest hour. My nine year old nephew could've done a finer cover. If I were dim enough to get an entire Maiden cover as a tattoo, it would invariably be Live After Death (Eddie rises from the grave) or Powerslave (Eddie as Abu Simbel).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 August 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

My nine year old nephew could've done a finer cover.

Yeah, but I'm talking in tattoo terms. All that hyperdetail would show that you are truly insane to want THAT on your back.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 August 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but the 'hyperdetail' on that cover is all pretty cheesy, I found. Nudge nudge wink wink lyrical references, flimsy Blade Runner homage, tired digital lettering. It was dead on arrival (especially after the majesty of Live After Death which preceded it).

Eddies finest hour.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 25 August 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

As was noted last night by our group in considering the covers, the best part about it is the victim's hand clutching the shirt.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 August 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

...exposing a tantalizing glimpse of Eddie's taut, sexy midriff.
