Sorry if this question has already been answered:

In the video "Centerfold" by the J Geils Band, was MTV V-J Martha Quinn featured in the video? Or was this another urban legend?

thanks to all who can answer this for me.

That's not Martha Quinn, but merely a brunette with short hair.

Well, now that that's settled, let's talk about the J. Geils Band! S&D! C/D!

I love "Give it to Me", "Detroit Breakdown", "Love Stinks", woofa-goofa with the green teeth, etc. The whole Freeze Frame album was a real phenomenon, all the kids at my elementary school had it, would debate the best tracks (budding rock-crits all of them!), etc. I actually never owned it back in the day but it was a real staple of the roller-skating scene, lemme tell ya.

I've been meaning to pick up more of the early 70's albums for a while. They're one of the few white blues bands that my snobbish blues-listening friends are into.

I love both incarnations, the shuffle blues harmica usin' boogie band and the semi-greaser/new-wave boys of "Freeze Frame" and "Centerfold"

Man, "Love Stinks" is one of the most negligently overlooked songs EVAH!

love stinks, love stinks, yeah yeah, love stinks.

J Geils Band are fun, and I like fun. Ergo, I like the J Geils Band.

I'm sure everyone and their mother have heard the big hits -- "Freeze Frame", "Centerfold", "Love Stinks" -- but what are some other catchy songs from them?

I will never forget those aforementioned videos, either. From being splattered with paint to being surrounded with lingere-wearing automaton-looking young laydees to the shot of that old guy with a talent for contorting his face just so, those were some memorable video moments they created.

Mr. Diamond is bringing me back. When i was in the fourth grade, nothing would get me as pumped up at the roller rink as 'Centerfold'. The lyrics presented such an tantalizing and mysterious erotic charge to my ten-year-old mind. Hell, just the word 'centerfold' did back then. And the groovy anthemic organ riff and 'na-na-na-na-na-na' vocals worked so well as a lead-in to Peter Wolf's salacious half-rapped vocals. It's actually not too far from the Smurfs television show theme song; but with "na's" instead of "la's".

have there been previous threads about rock criticism one did with one's friends as a pre-adolescent? Or the contents of one's record collection at that age? I remember my friends at the time arguing over stuff like who was the best out of those original MTV VJ's. And if 'Centerfold' was just alright by us, we loathed Rick Springfield and thought his music was 'wimpy'. My older brother, though, just mocked me for liking J. Geils Band, and called them 'disco', his pejorative for everything that wasn't in the category of what's now called 'classic rock'.

I remember a friend's dad refused to let him buy 'Freeze Frame' because it contained a track called "Piss on the Wall". Another friend owned the live Ozzy record that has him regurgitating what looks like rasberry jam on the cover. His mom affixed a piece of gift wrap over the offending image (just the ersatz bloody vomit; not Ozzy's face).

growing up, I always thought it was Martha Quinn who gets led up onstage in the "Dancing in the Dark" video...but as it turns out, it's Courtney Cox, right?

living in the past rules! especially if it's the past of twenty years ago...rambling on, wasting valuable bandwidth...

From the later period, I only know the hits, from the early period, I own Live Fullhouse and Nightmares...and Other Tales From the Vinyl Jungle, both of which are great. Catchy songs? From the latter, Must of Got Lost is catchy, I think. (but Detroit Breakdown is one of the best tracks off that album).

"Come Back" on Love Stinks rocks entire solar systems.

"Blow Your Face Out" is a killer live album, featuring "Must of Got Lost", "Detroit Breakdown", and some good Motown covers ("Shoot Your Shot" and "Where Did Our Love Go?"), plus a lot more cool shit.

I always liked "First I Look at the Purse". Bloodshot had a cool cover. The drummer was hot.

Great piano break on "Detroit Breakdown," and I remember asking my CLASSICAL PIANO TEACHER to help me transcribe the organ solo on the Blow Your Face Out version of "Musta' Got Lost." He obliged and the rest is (my own personal) history.

God, they were my first "I LOVE THESE GUYS" obesessive band. Other classics: Ladies Invited with "The Lady Makes Demands" and, what is probably their best studio album, Monkey Island. Great stuff! -- particularly, "Wreckage" on MI.

Also,

Martha said that though it wasn't her, that she would've loved to have been in the video...can the woman be any more goddess-like?
