Excellent thread!

Ace of Spades cannot be criticised, but it's important to show love to other songs too, such as:

Killed by Death
Snaggletooth
Jailbait
Iron Fist
Too late, too late
Iron Horse (from No Sleep Til Hammersmith)

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course there are!! I always hate when "Ace of Spades" gets cited. "Oooh yeah I'm down with Motorhead 'Ace of Spades' roxx." Buzz off you dilettante!

Shoot You in the Back
Over the Top
No Class
Stay Clean
We are the Road Crew
Killed by Death

Are all up there.

Also, I'm really partial to the first lp and On Parole because I'm a huge Larry Wallis fan. I loved loved loved the Pink Fairies Kings of Oblivion, and I think Wallis really carried the energy and swagger he brought to that band over to Motorhead. Besides being a great guitarist this guy had an amazing knack for hooks. I love "Vibrator" and "City Kids" and especially "On Parole"! "I'M! BACK! On my feet again!"

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 17 April 2003 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Capricorn!
But my personal fave will always remain Killed vy Death (the live version esp.). Eeeasy!
The only time I'm easy is when I'm... KILLED BY DEATH!!

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 17 April 2003 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Capricorn!

I'd forgotten all about that one. Hats must be doffed to Metropolis too. I'd also give props to Born to Raise Hell, but that's not actually better than Ace of Spades in my opinion.

I really do think there's a strong case for Killed by Death being the best ever metal song, though.

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 17 April 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Great, hahaha! I forgot to mention "Speed Freak". Dunno if it's better than Ace of Spades, but it's AS GOOD.

colin s barrow, Thursday, 17 April 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Please Don't Touch

Of course I'm going to pick the soppy duet!

kate, Thursday, 17 April 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm So Bad Baby (I Don't Care)"

Almost makes me believe I believe Lemmy actually makes love to mountain lions like he claims.

mei (mei), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

'love me like a reptile'

matthew james (matthew james), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mei is exactly right.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"Bomber", "We Are the Road Crew," "Motorhead", "R.A.M.O.N.E.S", "Orgazmatron"....maybe not better, but just as magnificent.

I always thought "Killed by Death" -- while entertaining -- was pretty dumb.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Well yeah, but 'pretty dumb' could be applied to every Motorhead song of note (and every other Motorhead song too). That shouldn't be a criticism of them!

"Another tube of superglue..." for example from We Are the Road Crew is also somewhat dumb!

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh SO wrong. The lyrics of "We Are the Road Crew" are positively genius -- perfectly encapsulating the life of a Motorhead roadie in a pithily concise and hilarious manner. Whereas "Killed By Death"'s lyrics are just .....well....weak.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ace of Spades" was definitely the best song in their set last summer.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

They do a mean "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock and Roll)".

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

favourites are No Class (& really 90% of the Ace 'o' Spades LP), Iron Horse (especially that kinda '72 ZZ Top-styled desert funk demo version), Motorhead (the song), & Lost Johnny.

thanks to mei for reminding me about "I'm So Bad". Is that from Orgasmatron?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

please dont touch all the way.
was it motorhead and girlschool tho or
just lemmo ?

piscesboy, Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

another vote for the song "Motorhead". Chuck Berry on speed!

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

:ahem:

OVERKILL

(I think that was subtle enough)

Alan Conceicao, Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

please don't touch was motorhead/girlschool

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 17 April 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I was pleasantly surprised by 'Love Me Like a Reptile'. And everybody loves 'Please Don't Touch' even if it is a soppy duet.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always liked "Motorhead" and "Lost Johnny"

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I probably do like Ace Of Spades best. I was listening to Motorhead earlier today as it happens, and I'd say my other favourites are Over The Top and Killed By Death.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i always imagine martin relaxing at home and listening to motorhead. (my faves have been mentioned: capricorn, lost johnny, and overkill.)

dan (dan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ha, that's the first time I've played more than Ace Of Spades by Motorhead in at least a couple of years. With Black Sabbath's Paranoid album, that's about it for metal at this house.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

In all my years I never met anyone with a motorhead album in their collection yet countless friends claimed to like them is that just a US thing?

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Ridin' With The Driver
Iron Fist
No Voices In The Sky
Motorhead
and indeed, Please Don't Touch

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Seconding or thirding:

Bomber
We Are The Road Crew
Stay Clean

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

My band sometimes does a cover of "Go to Hell" off Iron Fist. That's the only other song I've heard besides "Ace of Spades."

Famous Athlete, Friday, 18 April 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe that no one's mentioned the two best Motorhead songs EVAH!

Stone Dead ForEVAH!

&

All The Aces

Davlo (Davlo), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

'Rock n' roll', from '87
http://www.rocktoons.com/motorhead/motorhead.jpg

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I also remember enjoying them doing a version of Triple H's theme tune at a Wrestlemania. The only drawback was that he was about to fight the undertaker, whose theme tune was Limp Bizkit's Rollin', so I feared that they might be on too, but thankfully they weren't.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, iron fist!

plus no class, motorhead (except cockney rejects version)... although AoS is pretty good. last time we put it on at the bull & gate the bar bloke turned the jukebox volume STRAIGHT DOWN.

kieron, Friday, 18 April 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
"Shoot You In The Back" (Inverted "Immigrant Song" riff + rattlesnake percussion = genius!)
"Vibrator"
"Overkill"
"We Are The Road Crew"
"Heart Of Stone"

And etc. Where to stop?!

Alex has gotta be the only person besides myself who considers "Killed By Death" kinda 'meh'. (Dunno why they temporarily felt they needed TWO guitarists, anyways.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:07 (twenty years ago)

"Killed By Death" = meh for sure. (But "Lost Johnny" makes a lot of sense. And all I know is, whatever other Motorhead songs are better than "Ace of Spades", they were probably released on Chiswick.)

chuck, Friday, 17 September 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago)

They did (live) versions of both "Anarchy in the UK" and "God Save the Queen" that were both awesome. There's also at least one alternate version of "Eat the Rich" that is actually BETTAH than "Ace of Spaces".
Which is shocking, because "Ace of Spaces" is pretty fookin' awesome.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 17 September 2004 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Love for "Deaf Forever" and "Don't Need Religion" and "I'm the Doctor" in addition to all those listed above. Dunno if they're "better" (though "Deaf Forever" is pretty friggin snazz), but there's not a lot of dross among the nine or 10 Motorhead albums I own.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 18 September 2004 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Please Don't Touch
Of course I'm going to pick the soppy duet!

-- kate (masonicboo...), April 17th, 2003.

hey despite what some may say that's a great song, it works well in the middle of one of my mix cd's!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 18 September 2004 02:10 (twenty years ago)

If i had to pick a Motorhead song i thought was better than 'Ace of Spades', I'd pick 'Bomber', simply cause of that great, simple, catchy riff.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 18 September 2004 02:12 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

"Capicola," lol

gabbneb, Thursday, 27 December 2007 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

"nightmare the dreamtime" off 1916 is awesome and unlike anything else they've done before or since.

Nate Carson, Friday, 28 December 2007 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

Second "Nightmare/the Dream Time," raise you "Dead and Gone." Brilliant song, again unlike anything else they've done, although Lemmy did borrow part of the tune from an old psychedelic song that he guested on.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 28 December 2007 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

real motorhead fans will prolly think it's cheezy but NO FACES IN THE SKY rules my world

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 28 December 2007 04:41 (seventeen years ago)

songs i like as much as ace of spades:

motorhead
lost johnny
iron horse/born to lose
city kids
on parole
overkill
stay clean
no class
dead men tell no tales
stone dead forever
bomber
we are the road crew
jailbait
please don't touch
emergency

hahaha, that just looks like the track-listing to the no remorse comp! well, what the hell, it was a hell of a comp.

stone dead forever is my FAVORITE motorhead song. always has been.

scott seward, Saturday, 29 December 2007 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

"Orgasmatron"! I love what Laswell did to that track.

"The Chase is Better Than the Catch" has long been my favourite Motorhead song, though.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 29 December 2007 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

the riff from "bomber" kills me every time

latebloomer, Saturday, 29 December 2007 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

oh yeah i forgot orgasmatron the song. i like that as much as ace of spades too.

scott seward, Saturday, 29 December 2007 00:16 (seventeen years ago)

I like Overkill

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 29 December 2007 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

THE WOLF! (wolf wolf wolf..)

andrew m., Saturday, 29 December 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago)

four years pass...

"Stone Dead Forever" just came up on shuffle play and forgot just how relentless it is.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 7 July 2012 01:32 (twelve years ago)

Bomber off Hammersmith

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Saturday, 7 July 2012 01:49 (twelve years ago)

"Sex and Death" off Sacrifice. Newer than most of the stuff mentioned ITT, but so fucking badass:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpVpMbGOvhI

We know what we do, we know what we do,
We do what we must and we admire our attitude

contenderizer, Saturday, 7 July 2012 05:00 (twelve years ago)

wish that clip sounded a little better. ah well. also, heresy as it may be, i fucking love another perfect day, so:

shine
dancing on your grave
one track mind

contenderizer, Saturday, 7 July 2012 06:42 (twelve years ago)

my favourite track by them has always been the cover of Leaving Here.

Wish my Roundhouse '75 recording had better quality cos sounds like there's a couple of tracks on there might be interesting. Their take on Waiting For The Man for one.

Stevolende, Saturday, 7 July 2012 10:51 (twelve years ago)

wow, would love to hear that

contenderizer, Saturday, 7 July 2012 15:53 (twelve years ago)

tbh all my favorite stuff has already been mentioned:

motorhead
on parole
bomber
stone deaf forever
love me like a reptile
shoot you in the back
killed by death
jailbait
orgasmatron
leaving here
too late too late
the chase is better than the catch

plus, yeah, the 1916 album is amazing:

i'm so bad (baby i don't care)
no voices in the sky
nightmare/the dreamtime
r.a.m.o.n.e.s.

contenderizer, Saturday, 7 July 2012 16:19 (twelve years ago)

The Hammer

if Spaghetti-Os had whammy bars (Neanderthal), Sunday, 24 January 2021 16:59 (four years ago)

overkill

brimstead, Sunday, 24 January 2021 17:03 (four years ago)

yeeeeesss

if Spaghetti-Os had whammy bars (Neanderthal), Sunday, 24 January 2021 17:04 (four years ago)

today it's Damage Case.

stirmonster, Sunday, 24 January 2021 17:13 (four years ago)

another worthy one

if Spaghetti-Os had whammy bars (Neanderthal), Sunday, 24 January 2021 17:14 (four years ago)

the live version of "Bomber" from NO Sleep Til Hammersmith

if Spaghetti-Os had whammy bars (Neanderthal), Sunday, 24 January 2021 17:23 (four years ago)

hell yeah

brimstead, Sunday, 24 January 2021 17:41 (four years ago)

These days my go-to Motörhead track is the live version of "Motorhead" from No Sleep... Lemmy's bass tone is so unbelievably disgusting on that song. It's one of those "there are no speakers big enough to do this justice" songs.

but also fuck you (unperson), Sunday, 24 January 2021 17:54 (four years ago)

hell yeah x2

I also love the opening “the watcher” on what’s wordsworth?, insanely explosive

brimstead, Sunday, 24 January 2021 18:07 (four years ago)

the live version of "Motorhead"

still incredible that this was a top ten hit in the UK. disgusting is the word. beautifully disgusting.

stirmonster, Sunday, 24 January 2021 18:57 (four years ago)

"Speed Freak" - maybe not better than (or as good as) "Ace..." but I love how the intro bass riff approximates the sound of clenched teeth grinding away amphetaminically

Hongro Hongro Hippies (Myonga Vön Bontee), Sunday, 24 January 2021 19:09 (four years ago)
