Cat Power: Worth the adolescent idealistic "Hate everyone" attitude for her throaty sleepers?

In the spirit of the fiona apple thread, as I noticed the later responses were really more applicable to Ms. Marshall than to Fiona. Temper tantrums on stage, et cet. all present and accounted for. Also, her music videos feature far less skin.

I once interviewed her. Not taking into account she can run off stage or have tantrums, I told her our local crowd likes to heckle. Above the club was a bowling alley. Problem is that when the music is quiet, you can hear the balls drop. So after a while she goes "WHO IS DOING THIS? AND YALL ARE TALKING ABOUT ME." She runs off. Then the club-manager runs backstage and talks it out. Oops.
She's actually a very nice girl. Problem is that she has two stalkers who send her (and Bill Callahan) letters and follow her around. The interview itself was the most depressing one I have ever done.

"Throaty sleepers," I like it.

I'm not familiar enough with said throaty sleepers to comment, but the question itself = Classic. Also, for some reason, she's about the only current rock performer that Richard Meltzer will admit to liking.

Stevie Nixed, could you elaborate on the interview (is it on the web?), I'm currently listening to one of her Cd's and it's been growing on me.

I dig the Lucky Star ripoff in the Crossbones Style video.

Worth it even if just to read her interview in The Big Takeover: Back Issue No. 43, 1998 (REM on the cover). The interview starts off normal enough but eventually Chan ends up rambling on about demon shadows trying to kill her and her cat before she breaks down. Then it goes back to about as normal an interview on you could have with some one after that outburst.

Is cat power just a chix singer and one guitarist on stage when they perform live? I think ive seen them before yeeeears ago.

I've never paid much attention to her actual interviews. I just like the music, that is enough for me. Search: Moon Pix & What Would The Community Think. Destroy: Cat Power, the "persona".

eMusic subscribers rared an earlier Cat Power album -- You Are Fee, I think -- as one of the 100 best discs available on the site. So I'm considering whether to download it. Worthwhile disc?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 3 August 2008 13:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha. The disc is You Are Free, not You Are Fee, obv. You Are Fee is a funnier title, tho.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 3 August 2008 13:44 (sixteen years ago) link

it's good but "covers album" and "moon pix" are better

akm, Sunday, 3 August 2008 13:49 (sixteen years ago) link

"Werewolf" is the only good song on YAF, imo.

Turangalila, Sunday, 3 August 2008 14:08 (sixteen years ago) link

MOON PIX. I'd go for "The Greatest" above YAF, cos she does a good tvdrama soundtrack thing on it and you see why peopol think she could be viabl;e commercially

Niles Caulder, Sunday, 3 August 2008 14:11 (sixteen years ago) link

But MOON PIX is the best record and has some really lovely art too
