Albums Criminally Unavailable on Compact Disc

Picked up a copy of Manifest Destiny by the Dictators yesterday at Rockit Scientist on Carmine Street, after years and years of bitching and moaning about how it was such a high crime that said album had never been issued on CD (leave it to the Japanese, of course.) But there still remains a slew of great albums that have yet -- to my knowledge, at least -- to see proper release on CD (and I don't mean cheap-o MP3s or CD-Rs).

My list:

Belfegore by Belfegore
Teen Babes from Monsanto by Redd Kross
Headkick Facsimile by Cop Shoot Cop
HA!Killing Joke Live by Killing Joke
The Pop-O-Pies and by the Pop-O-Pies
And You Thought You Were Normal by Nash the Slash
Let Them Eat Jellybeans - seminal Alt.Tentacles compilation.

yerz?

Arthur Russell's World Of Echo hasn't been released so far on CD, has it?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

ZE Christmas Album

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Thursday, 17 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got "World of Echo" - one of those albums where you think, to quote Ze artist Christina, "Is that all there is?". Oh I have it on vinyl, I imagine CD won't improve it any.

How about "God Bless Tiny Tim" and "Tiny Tim's 2nd Album". Oh yes, and "Starsailor", obviously.

Dadaismus, Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Which Starsailor, Dadaismus? Not Tim Buckley's?
(Papa Buckley's S-sailor is on CD)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

IT IS?!?!??! Where?

Dadaismus, Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to have a copy of that 60s Detroit comp mentioned in "Stairway To Hell". Speaking of that that, Seger's pre-"Beautiful Loser" stuff really needs to be properly reissued. I can't think of another "big selling" artist (ya know, back in the day) who's allowed such a substatial chunk of his work stay out of print. (Costello and Bowie don't count, since their stuff only went out of print so it could be reissued).

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

While it is indeed available as a pricey Jap import, I've never understood why No New York has never seen wider distribution....it being so universally fawned over, etc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Dadaismus, I taped T'Buckley's Starsailor offa my friends CD. The truth is, though, that was a few years ago...
By "Papa Buckley's S-sailor is on CD" I meant that it has been released on CD (as opposed to, frinstance, World Of Echo that hasn't so far, I believe)
As for the availability of Starsailor on CD at the moment, I'm unable to point out any place to buy it right away - p'haps somebody else on ILM does?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

p'haps somebody else on ILM does?

Not only is it out of print, this is the one week of the year when you can't even find it on eBay.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Neil Young owns this thread, although he is stubborn enough not to realise himself.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Rhino was supposed to reissue Buckley's work from "Starsailor" and on through "Look At The Fool" a few years ago, altough I think that fell through.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Desmond Dekker Compass Point (Island)

Stomu Yamashita (w. Steve Winwood) Go (Island)

bflaska, Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Soundtrack to Permanent Record, shitty Keanu Reeves teen suicide flick, but features a full side of excellent Joe Strummer tunes.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 17 April 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Never mind "Manifest Destiny",is the FIRST Dictators album available on CD?!??!?! Truly a neglected classic!

Dadaismus, Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Go Girl Crazy the first Dictators alb?
If it is then it was just reissued by Sony last fall.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't we do this a few weeks ago?

Oh well, it can't be said often enough: Lick My Decals Off Baby.

Bloody Rhino were supposed to be reissuing that one as well.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, thought so: Albums that shouldn't be out of print...

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The Effigies - Forever Grounded, Ink & Fly On A Wire
Flipper - Gone Fishin'

earlnash, Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The whole back catalogue of the St Winnifred's School Choir.

russ t, Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Buckley's Starsailor is mos def out of print and next to impossible to find used. And the Rhino thing seems to be on permanent hold...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought of another one - the original "Bat Chain Puller"

Dadaismus, Thursday, 17 April 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex,

It seems to me your original intention of this thread was to discuss albums that have never been on CD, as opposed to albums that are simply out of print on CD.

Redd Kross' "Teen Babes From Monsanto" has been on CD, but it has yet to be given a proper reissue. Seek out the McDonald boys' 1992 release on Insipid Vinyl called "Trance Austrailian Tour 1992." It features the three tracks from Redd Kross' Trance single, plus all 8 songs from "Teen Babes." So its not quite the proper CD release that you are looking for, but sure isn't some cheapo CD-R.

KORITFW,

Marshall Stax

Charles Ives 'Concord Sonata' performed by John Kirkpatrick

milton, Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Why doesn't someone re-release the last three Feelies albums, esp. The Good Earth? I don't get it.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

also, asking for the original 'bat chain puller' is one thing, why the fuck isn't 'lick my decals off baby' in print?

I hope it's because rhino's got something huge up their sleeves.

milton, Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Rental & The Normal - Live at West Runton Pavilion

with all the recent developments in music, i wouldn't be surprised to see this unearthed again...

i'm glad to have an mp3 of it...

msp, Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Marshall!

Oh, and yeah --- Go Girl Crazy is indeed available on compact disc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Soundtrack to Permanent Record, shitty Keanu Reeves teen suicide flick, but features a full side of excellent Joe Strummer tunes.

This actually did get released on CD (I have a copy), but it's out-of-print these days.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The soundtrack to "Picnic at Hanging Rock" would be nice (yeah yeah, I know....it's pan-flute music, but it's still pretty damn atmospheric!)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a Starsailor on the Bay. It was Buy It Now @ 100 bucks!

I know these can be found in the used bins, but they should still be in print.

Brendan Benson, One Mississippi
John Frusciante, Niandra Lades & Usually Just a T-Shirt

I have had a hard time finding these, and I don't know how available they are:

Flying Burrito Brothers, The Gilded Palace of Sin
Alexander "Skip" Spence, Oar
Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra, Nancy & Lee
Jorge Ben, Africa Brasil
David Axelrod, Song of Innocence
Ennio Morricone, La Citta Violenta

Probably never will be in print, but deserve to be:

Richard Harris, My Boy
Richard Harris, The Richard Harris Love Album

Cub, Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard that somebody's working on the Brigitte Fontaine back catalogue; any truth?

The great Scot duo, The Corries, have few, if any, albums on disc.

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

There are several excellent Esther Phillips albums that have never been on CD. Of course, both Jobriath albums have never been released on CD as well.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Oar" has been reissued by Sundazed, altough it Columbia special products did it first.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, "Nancy & Lee" got reissued with several bonus tracks by Rhino under the title "Fairy Tales & Fantasies:The Best of Nancy & Lee" I don't know if it's still in print though.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

stevie wonder presents syreeta.

chrisbrei, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Bite by Altered Images is, or has ever been, available on CD which is a shame as it's such a great album. Buying that album on cassette was the best 50p I ever spent.

jamesmichaelward (jamesmichaelward), Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Momus say he was going to rerelease his Creation Records stuff? That is great news.

I am still waiting for the BARBARELLA soundtrack.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still waiting for Essential Logic to be released on CD. Supposedly Cherry Red was planning to release some stuff last year but I haven't heard anything since then. Apparently, Laura Logic is asking for too much money. On the subject of post-punk, it would be great to see "Do you Wanna Buy a Bridge?" on CD.

Jeff K (jeff k), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

kill rock stars will be releasing some essential logic stuff in a couple months...

msp, Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ogden's Nut Gone Flake doesn't show up on Amazon (though I suppose its available on Import).

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Rhino was supposed to reissue Buckley's work from "Starsailor" and on through "Look At The Fool" a few years ago, altough I think that fell through.

there are a clutch of starsailor tracks on the rhino comp though. and the monkees tv show version of Song to the Siren.

I also wish Russell's World of Echo was on cd. I burned my vinyl to cd, but with music that quiet pops and cracles can annoy.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No fair -- Alex in NYC named my # 1 choice up on top! ;)

Just kidding... I too would adore it if I could at least special order a copy of Belfegore's self-titled Elektra (?) album.

There's a really good US pressing of Duran Duran's "Rio" that's never seen the light of day CD-wise. All the "Rio" CDs out there contain the mixes that were released with the UK vinyl release of "Rio", but most of the vinyl/cassette releases of "Rio" that were bought in the US contain completely different mixes for about half of the songs. They're David Kirschenbaum (sp?) remixes, and with these songs (e.g. "Hold Back the Rain") the Kirschenbaum versions are actually better, IMO. I could never really listen to the CD of "Rio" because it's not the one I got into, and I would love the US-centric version of the album to be released onto CD.

The whole Yellow Magic Orchestra discography is classified as OOP in the US. The only way you can get CDs of theirs is by either buying a secondhand one on some rare-music site such as GEMM or by buying a Japanese import, both of which will end up costing you some serious money.

I would love for The Bongos' "Numbers with Wings" to be available. According to the Amazon site, it's also classified as OOP. I could buy it off the Amazon "used CDs" subsite or Half.com's site, but either option would again be costing me some serious money.

That's about it, I think.

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 18 April 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Flying Burrito Brothers, The Gilded Palace of Sin

there's a (nicely priced) '97 CD re-issue that combines this one with follow-up Burrito Deluxe

willem (willem), Friday, 18 April 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Dee... My original US vinyl version of Rio is in my pile of stuff to digitize.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 18 April 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Simon - The Paul Simon Songbook (early very strong solo versions of songs he later did together with Art. Never released on CD and production of LP halted at his own orders, but I never understood why)

John Cale - Caribbean Sunset (I have absolutely no idea why this album does not exist on CD. The title song is one of his very best ever, as is Ville Albani)

Tijn, Friday, 18 April 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure the Barbarella soundtrack is available as a Japanese import CD. I seem to recall seeing it, in any case.

JS Williams (js williams), Friday, 18 April 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Numbers with Wings! Wow. Haven't thought of that one in a while. I have it... on vinyl.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought it as a German import years ago, but I'd love it if somebody went to Paisley Park to remaster and release the self-titled release from The Family...hopefully with the longer 12" version of "The Screams Of Passion" as an extra track. I loved that cassette so much it was worn away to nothing.

Erick H (Erick H), Friday, 18 April 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite the vinyl obsessiveness with it, it should be more widely available:
Come into Knowledge--Ramp

wrmdsk, Friday, 18 April 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a really good US pressing of Duran Duran's "Rio" that's never seen the light of day CD-wise

I have been complaining about this very fact for about twelve years now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you sure you don't mean this?

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd100/d141/d14148x0s96.jpg

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No, not that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My vinyl version of Rio sounds exactly like the CD. Is there any way to tell the two versions apart?

Evan (Evan), Friday, 18 April 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

If you have the UK vinyl of Rio, that would explain that situation. The way I immediately distinguish the two is via "Hold Back the Rain" -- the UK vinyl/American CD version is still pretty good enough, yes. The American vinyl version is FUCKING ROCK GODHEAD, as Dee sagely notes above.

Also, Dee -- apparently all the YMO stuff just got reissued for cheap? Ask Millar, who posts here and on ILM a lot, he got them all.
