Search: "Born to Be Wild," "The Pusher," "Magic Carpet Ride"

Destroy: Everything else.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

There's nothing like a song that follows "Fire all of your guns at once and explode into space" with "Like a true nature's child".

Fivvy (Fivvy), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

They made many many records in a short period of time.

"Earschplittenloudenboomer"??!! I must hear this. All I have is 16 Greatest Hits, but in my youth I played in constantly. Alex, even destroy "Hey Lawdy Mama"?!

Mars Bonfire - greatest rock name ever?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"played it", that is. i did not in fact play in Steppenwolf in my youth (I wish!)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

If the music was as good the cover and song titles they would be gods

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i turned her without any money

i told her not to fear it's all very right

cracks me up all day.

search "live at the matrix," which was recorded when they were still called the sparrow. 20-odd minute version of "the pusher" with most of it being some pretty keen free improv noises.

your null fame (yournullfame), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"Rock Me Baby Rock Me Baby All Night Long" = coolest MTV Closet Classics video evuh

Search also: "It's Never Too Late to Start All Over Again", "Sookie Sookie" (?), and "Monster"

Joe (Joe), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit! Yes!! I just heard this on a local college radio station (the 20 minute live version of "The Pusher", that is). Man, before the vocals came in I was trying to guess what it was, and I swore it sounded like one of those side long Brother JT epics or maybe some other lost Siltbreeze classic. An impression aided by the lo-fi recording quality and slowly building spaced-out guitar jousting. I HAVE to get this.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Search - Side two of '...The Second' (excluding Magic Carpet Ride.)
-Don't step on the grass, Sam
- Monster
- The Pusher

Destroy - all harley-davidson references.

Search: s/t (1st) LP, The Second, Monster, At Your Birthday Party, "Who Needs Ya," "Snowblind Friend," (great Hoyt Axton-penned tune, uncharacteristically mellow) "Ride With Me," "In Hopes of a Garden." The last two are from the very under-rated 'For Ladies Only' LP, the last one they did before the (more-or-less) original band called it quits. Oh - and Search "Ball Crusher." Because since there is a song called "Ball Crusher" you require it in your collection.

Destroy: Any & all of the reunion discs, the 1st of which (I think) was 'Slow Flux.' Also, I seem to recall that all of John Kay's solo records are dispicably bad. Really, REALLY bad.

ImprovSpirit, Friday, 28 May 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

was listening to skullduggery yesterday. "lip service" is one of my fave disco tracks by a hard rock band. don't know if the beardo crowd is hip to it or not, but they should be.

Trip Maker, Friday, 28 May 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

That monster version of "The Pusher" was also released ages ago on the Early Steppenwolf LP.

The bass on some of 'Steppenwolf Live' is so out-of-tune it's almost microtonal composition. Occasionally it slips back in, I guess because the roadie finished smoking his doobie long enough to wander onstage and fiddle with the tuning key as Nick St. Nicholas ploughed on, unaware of anything wrong.

That's all I have to say about this band really.

I think Hesse mainly concentrated on the wolf though. Thought it was supposed to be a metaphor for what the urban male was missing too.
Think it was the 60s Penguin copy of that I had that had him saying certain books should only be rad by people of a certain amount of experience. Thought it sounded like it meant middle age so maybe I should read it again now and it'll be that different from when I was 17.
Band name came from the Hesse book I thought.
Came across a history of their evolution somewhere reasonably recently too. From early days as Jack London and the Sparrows or something through Sparrow changing a couple of vocalists along the way until they got John Kay and took on the longer name.
Was it an extended review of recently released early material in an Ugly Things over the last year or something.

Steppenwolf finally getting the reissue box set they have long deserved.

Magic Carpet Ride: The Dunhill/ABC Years 1967-1971

8 CDs, tons of bonus tracks (mostly single mixes etc.). I've already pre-ordered mine.

but also fuck you (unperson), Saturday, 14 August 2021 14:36 (four years ago)

There's some cognitive dissonance thinking of a Steppenwolf deluxe box set, somehow their music feels like it belongs on scratchy LPs with worn and stained covers. They did more than just the well-known biker rock: "A Girl I Knew" on their first album is not too far from Love or Donovan.

...lord knows I popped a lot of pills,
but I never touched nothing that my spirit could kill...

Does he mean "that could kill my spirit"?
Or is he mushmouthing "that my spirit couldn't kill"? ...like, that my spirit couldn't overcome?
