what's the worst crime committed by someone in your record collection?

apparently once john lennon tried to set fire to his lass' hand for having a mouth on her.

matthew james (matthew james), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Burzum to thread!

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

pat hare killed his wife.

maurice chevalier was arguably a vichy collaborator.

joe meek killed his landlady and hisself.

i'm sure there's a multiple-murderer in there somewheres.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

spade cooley killed his wife too, in front of their daughter.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Huhm, illegal drugs aside, the worst one in my collection is probably that guy from the Housemartins trying to bomb someone's house.

Poppy (poppy), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Since I don't have any Charles Manson records any more, I guess I'll have to go with Charley Patton.

Unless of course you mean crimes against art, of which there are many in my collection.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, i was hoping for this not to tuen into another white stripes thread...

i think we need to refer to the norwegians. i was reading an interview in a copy of Terrorizer where one of the death metallers promised to reoffend, but either the scandinavians are being to liberal again, or they're just taking it as a joke.

matthew james (matthew james), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure Serge Gainsbourg did some naughty things with young girls. At least, I'd like to think that he did.

hoops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

mj, I am not sure what you mean seeing as I will never own a White Stripes record, ever. I do have SOME moral and aesthetic principles, y'know.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I do have at least a few songs by Gary Glitter on various compilations. Does that count?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yep.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That seals it, I'm going to have to like the White Stripes. There is just too much silly hating. I was on the fence because I like the Zeppelinisms, but hate the rhythm "section". Plus I heard a couple cuts from the new one and they are damn good.

I have Manson, Hare, Burzum and Meek. If Burroughs really killed his wife, throw him in there.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

what did charley patton do? aside from steal a lot of people's women and violate prohibition and get into lots of fights?

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

jack white shot his dog

matthew james (matthew james), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Come to think of it, I also have Phil Spector's Christmas album. I guess killing somebody is worse than what Gary Glitter has done

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

innocent until proven guilty, geir!

matthew james (matthew james), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Diamond in summarizing Chuck Eddy's review of Elephant SHOCKAH!

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

if i only had picked up that Rick James dollar record i could contribute more to this thread

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The extended version of "Stay One Jump Ahead" on Killing Joke's abortive Outside the Gate album.....featuring a "rap." All parties concerned should be abjectly ashamed of themselves.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't read Eddy's review, but hey great minds etc.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

geir you're forgetting about the tony banks incident with the bank teller, the wiffle ball, and the marmot. ouch!

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

KRS-One let Puffy guest rap on a track. (hiding it as a bonus track doesn't make it right, pal)

hoops (Oops), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Lessee...
Charles Manson
Da Lench Mob (J-Dee got sent up for murder 1)
RL Burnside (oft-repeated claim of shooting some guy in the head)
*cough*
MICHAEL JACKSON

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Mayhem! And after that, it's just stupid drug addictions and stuff and stuff. Lame.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

KRS-One let Puffy guest rap on a track.

He was also caught (before his MC days) with a few hefty bags full of weed. This, I suppose, is his second-worst crime.

Also: I have Star Time.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) doing a cover of Witchita Lineman.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

More trivia: I have a CD of the early 80s US band N.M.E. (primitive punk/metal in a Motorhead/Venom fashion, the debut is not extremely good but nice to have - it's a bit of a rarity I believe). Anyway, guitarist Kurt S. stabbed his mother to death with a pair of scissors, apparently because he thought she was a robot (that was his legal defence, at least). Happened in '86 or '87 if I recall well. After ten years in a mental institution he was released, so if you bump into him, don't show off your Kraftwerk impersonation skills.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

How is it that some of you are interested in Charles Manson's music career?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

if it's good enough for axl it's good enough for me

matthew james (matthew james), Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

well, the song of Manson's that the Beach Boys recorded, "Never Learn Not to Love" is actually quite good. Of course, they credited the song entirely to Dennis...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the lp that was on ESP just has kind of creepy loner vibe that's worth visiting every once in a while, not unlike a the "real people" (dumbass catalog term) type records.

And shit Siegbran's posted reminded of Jim Gordon! Killed his mother by pounding her head with a hammer! I have him on a shitload of records (most famously Traffic, Steely Dan, Derek and the Dominos, lots and lots of session work).

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Steely Dan - there's that teenage girl who ended up dead in Walter Becker's apartment.

hstencil, Friday, 18 April 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My record collection is not large enough for anyone to commit a crime in it.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 18 April 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

GG Allin committed a slew of crimes ranging from the petty (indecent exposure, public drunkeness) through the serious (assualt & battery, drug possesion, etc.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

GG Allin committed a slew of crimes ranging

And primarily on stage.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 18 April 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Arthur Lee three strikes felon!

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil Spector - alleged murderer.

also, one of the members of Les Rallizes Denudes seems to have been involved in a hijacking.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Kurt Cobain ripped off Killing Joke. Kurt's now dead. You do the math.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Killing Joke ripped off the Damned. Or maybe Kurt Cobain ripped off the Damned. Who knows? Who cares?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Who knows? Who cares?

Now I've got a Rose Tattoo song stuck in my head.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a recording of Jim Jones. Does that count?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 18 April 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

one person forgotten here -- the drummer guy on derek and the domino's layla, who went nuts and killed his mom!

for obvious reasons, Burzum and Mayhem rule this thread. since i have exactly zero Gary Glitter, R. Kelly, Charles Manson, GG Allin, or Michael Jackson records (though i do have some GG and Jackson 5 mp3's), i can't count them in my collection.

which leaves me with more chickenshit stuff -- the foibles of Ol' Dirty Bastard, Genesis P. Orridge's run-ins with the British cops, a pre-Mothers Frank Zappa getting busted by California vice cops (for making a soundtrack for a stag film), the Stones getting arrested for pissing on a gas station garage, Ozzy getting arrested for pissing on the Alamo, Gary Numan getting arrested for flying his plane over an Indian military base, Sid Vicious's antics (how could people here have forgotten Sid?)

also, for the crime to "count," did the artist actually have to be arrested, charged, and/or convicted? i'm looking at Eazy-E (got the $$$ to start up Ruthless Records from selling drugs) and god knows how many other rappers here!

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 18 April 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Trivia: Manson's tune "Never Learn Not to Love" was originally titled "Cease to Exist" (you won't find that mentioned in the liner notes to the BB reissues). Hm.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

fave all-time Ozzy Osborne quote -- Texas cop to Ozzy: "how would you like it if I pissed on Buckingham Palace?"

Ozzy to Texas cop: "i wouldn't care -- i don't live there!"

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Uhhh... didn't Sid Vicious kill his girl?

Evan (Evan), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I know that the drummer of JKALE once robbed a convenience store, and has also dabbled in the drug trade

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

There's that unexplained "suicide" in the CL-CR aisle of the Raggettstacks...

Clarke B., Friday, 18 April 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a Mayhem song on a black metal comp. They did something pretty bad, right?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

one person forgotten here -- the drummer guy on derek and the domino's layla, who went nuts and killed his mom!

Jim Gordon - I mentioned him about ten posts above yours.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, Sid Vicious was suspected of killing Nancy Spungen too, wasn't he?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a Gary Glitter best-of CD in my collection. I swear to you I haven't listened to it in ages.

If you're counting all recorded mediums, I have the Sex Pistols and, well, someone else mentioned Sid Vicious.

Hmmm.

Was Dave Gahan ever arrested for drug possession? I know he was a druggie and got treatment in the mid '90s.

Ozzy Osbourne was arrested for numerous things, including hitting his wife Sharon.

Ummm... I think that's it, really.

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oddly, Mayhem never did that much, in the sense that committing suicide and getting yourself stabbed isn't much of a 'crime'. But their animal bits throwing antics might actually be illegal in some way.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 18 April 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone remember dr pibes and thee house of wax equations? one of them killed his mum, too... seems matricide isn't uncommon in the world of rock...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 18 April 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

On New year's eve , in a fit of rage , the trombonist in the Skatalites Don Drummond killed his common law wife / band vocalist
Marguerita stabbing her to death and was commited to a mental ayslum
where he died 4 years later
i think the skatalites still tour , without hardly any original members as nearly all of them have died

marc read, Friday, 18 April 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, I assume you own a few records featuring that notorious international pot-smuggler Paul "Howard Marks" McCartney, who was finally caught bringing the evil stuff into Japan

dave q, Friday, 18 April 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

have any electronic music types killed anyone? there is of course and how could i possibly forget the one and only ol' dirty bastard... crim par excellence

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 18 April 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

there was that mad old gay dj / party organiser - john st john or something? michael st michael? - who killed someone for copying his threads.

matthew james (matthew james), Friday, 18 April 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

stars behind bars with a place in my stacks of wax:

convicted murderers: leadbelly, rl burnside, 2 of the prisonaires, little willie john

claimed to have been a convicted murderer but was later outed as a non-murderer by rolling stone: david allen coe

debatably murderers: manson, sid, spector, jerry lee

charged w/ manslaughter: vince neil, slick rick, snoop dogg

charged and/or convicted of sex crimes: gary glitter, chuck berry, rick james, johnny paycheck,

wife-beaters: james brown, tommy lee, ike turner

shoplifting or burglary: ODB, merle haggard

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

My Leadbelly cd has had some legal issues.
My James Brown cd led me on a 4 room chase through the house.
My Doors cd's take turns exposing themselves in public places.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 18 April 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

That gay party promoter was Michael Alig. He killed the guy over some shady drug deal, I think. His friend James St. James wrote a book about the murder and the whole late 80s/early 90s NY club kid scene called Disco Bloodbath. The movie about the whole affair, Party Monster, should be out soon. MacCauley Culkin plays Alig.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 18 April 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a clip from Party Monster on the (awful) Jimmy Kimmel Show and guest-host Snoop Dogg said, "Hey wasn't that cous' from home alone?" afterwards!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 18 April 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I didn't mention Angola Prisoners' Blues and similar LPs! Also Dock Boggs claimed to have shot and killed a man, I believe.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, I assume you own a few records featuring that notorious international pot-smuggler Paul "Howard Marks" McCartney, who was finally caught bringing the evil stuff into Japan

Yes, I do, but he still cannot quite compete with Gary Glitter and Phil Spector. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Come to think of it, the worst crime committed by someone in my record collection is either "13" or "Kid A"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Chi Ali allegedly killed someone over a few hundred dollars worth of old rap CDs, I think. (Not even LPs!)

JS Williams (js williams), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure Serge Gainsbourg did some naughty things with young girls. At least, I'd like to think that he did.

He propositioned Whitney Houston on live TV, an aesthetic crime in the first degree.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

David Bowie doing "Coffee Achiever" ads in the '80s is worse than "Never Let Me Down" and Tin Machine put together. But I loved the first Tin Machine record, so what do I know?

Erick H (Erick H), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i shot a man in reno just to watch him die.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

= greatest audience-pleasing line evah

Amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 19 April 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Charles Manson made very mediocre music.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 19 April 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

But Johnny only got arrested for picking flowers!

John Davies, Saturday, 19 April 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, John Davies, I was going to put Johnny Cash and the flower incident.

I guess for me it must be the murderers (Leadbelly, Little Willie John and maybe more).

Does anyone have a spoken work record and/or record that samples Hitler or Stalin? That'd be tough to beat.

James Ball (James Ball), Sunday, 20 April 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

No but 23 skidoo did sample unity mitford who was a pretty good friend of adolf...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Sunday, 20 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

An acquaintance of one of the vocalists on SPK's album "Leicenschrei" tried, in her own words, to give her syphilis by wiping his cock on her sandwich. Which may not be the worst crime here, but definitely rates a mention.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 20 April 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Dionne Warwick - busted with some doobie by the airport police, IIRC.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 20 April 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

There's that unexplained "suicide" in the CL-CR aisle of the Raggettstacks...

Security camera tapes verify my innocence. If anything, the person in question pulled the Close Lobsters wall down out of a fit of passion, which is admittedly suspicious seeing as the person was alone at the time, but stranger has occurred.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone with the Great Speeches of the 20th Century Box probably has a few war criminals in there...or are we only counting those CONVICTED of the crimes?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
some guy from east-germasn punk heroes "muellstation" killed his father with an axe

mutant, Saturday, 7 August 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

debatably murderers: manson, sid, spector, jerry lee

Manson is debatable?!! x-post

Serge's Whintey Houston come-on: THE greatest moment in the history of variety TV.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 7 August 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ten months pass...
I've got a couple Fang records. (80's oakland punk rock).

Apparently the singer killed somebody, was on America's Most Wanted, was captured, did his time, and is back doing shows w/ the band again. Punk rock.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Sunday, 12 June 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Suge Knight probably has a couple of stiffs on his conscience (if Phil Spector counts, so does Suge, no?)

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 12 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

I have a cd of motets by Don Carlo Gesualdo (1561 - 1613).

He brutally murdered his first wife and her lover, according to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Carlo_Gesualdo he possibly also murdered his son and father-in-law.

Masked Gazza, Sunday, 12 June 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

So I guess no one here owns any records by rapper Big Lurch? (he killed a woman and ate pieces of her while on PCP)

Amon (eman), Sunday, 12 June 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

the Hilliard Ensemble recording of Gesualdo's Tenebrae is one of the most haunted and beautiful things in the history of the world. listening to it through while reading the translated texts is enough to convince you that you've never had a single actual problem in your entire life.

http://www.towerrecords.com/product.aspx?from1=PERF&pfid=1074358

milton parker (Jon L), Sunday, 12 June 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

RL Burnside slit somebody's throat in a bar fight. I'm sure I've got a few more murderers in there.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 12 June 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

or maybe that was another Fat Possum blues guy who did the throat-slitting, Burnside just shot someone

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 12 June 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

RL Burnside, check. Also, Jim Gordon (drummer on the Derek & the Dominos album and a zillion other sessions) killed his mother in the depths of paranoid schizophrenia.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 12 June 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

ryan adams...for being ryan adams

Brian Eno features on one track on the new Coldplay album.

Radiohead released "Kid A"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 12 June 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

The worst crime? This one was pretty lame:

http://jetzi-mjvideos.com/pfm/pfm32.gif

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 12 June 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

My cat pissing all over my Birthday Party albums constitutes the worst crime committed by s.o. in my record collection.

stevo (stevo), Sunday, 12 June 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

A dude I worked with once told me that the 'brain tumor' which killed Tammi Terrell was named Marvin Gaye, but I've never heard or read that accusation repeated anywhere.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 12 June 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

i own/love angry anderson"suddenly".
angry must have broken the Australian biker law a few times?

bald headed woman, Sunday, 12 June 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

A dude I worked with once told me that the 'brain tumor' which killed Tammi Terrell was named Marvin Gaye, but I've never heard or read that accusation repeated anywhere.

This accusation was repeated by Tammi Terrell's... either brother or cousin on Channel 4's "Top Ten Duets" program back in 2001.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 12 June 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

I have a cd of motets by Don Carlo Gesualdo (1561 - 1613).
He brutally murdered his first wife and her lover, according to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Carlo_Gesualdo he possibly also murdered his son and father-in-law.

I'll bet that a few of those really, really old school people did all sorts of monstrous things and we don't even know about it.

bob n0pe (bobnope), Sunday, 12 June 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I'd heard on a few occasions that the source of Tammi Terrell's brain tumor was David Ruffin, not Marvin Gaye.
