undistinctive vocals

I was reading that other thread and thought "hey, what singers CAN'T you identify by the sound of their voice?"

Famous Athlete, Friday, 18 April 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually have an album but I'm not sure I could identify the Third Eye Blind singer. Actually I don't think I could identify many death metal vocalists. Neurosis might be an exception.

I think I'd have a problem telling Tal Bachman apart from Rob Thomas, and vice versa, if I wasn't relying on the well-known hits. Maybe throw in '90s-era John Rzeznik too.

Those twerps in: Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Simple Plan, the Ataris, etc. All pretty indistinguishable from each other.

It isn't neccessarily a bad thing, but alot of people have a similar sounding voice as Paul Westerberg. I think Jeff Tweady, Scott Taylor of the Grifters, and that Johnny guy from the Goo Goo Dolls all sound quite a bit like Westerberg on certain songs.

Rollins rant/spoken style of vocals sounds pretty much like a big chunk of punk/hardcore in his wake. Same could be same for that cookie monster grunting that all of those death metal bands use.

Jon Spencer should be held accountable for numerous college boys thinking they can wail it like they are on a corn liquor bender in love with the gospels.

Milo Auckerman could also be held potentially accountable for crimes against punk rock by almost singing a pop melody over punk rock songs about donuts and being shy. (See list that Alex in NYC posted.)

Eddie Vedder type vocals
Alice in Chains (forget the name) type vocals
Generic R&B vocals

I agree about "Eddie Veddar type" vocals, and I find it very entertaining because Eddie himself has one of the most distinct voices in America.

most Eddie Vedder type vocals = ppl who do not sound like Eddie Vedder at all

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 18 April 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Eddie Vedder voice is the lame-duck version of Concrete Blonde's Johnette (goddess) Napolitano. They sound eerily similar.

I would love to hear Johnette and Eddie do a duet, oh my god TOO MUCH THE SEXY!

Basically any genre where bands mostly just yell a lot.

can anyone tell apart the various nu-metal vocalists? or can i not do so because i turn the channel immediately upon hearing this shit being played?

i kinda like the generic death-metal cookie-monster-gone-psycho grunting!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 19 April 2003 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim Wheeler. Most anodyne voice ever?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 19 April 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

>i kinda like the generic death-metal cookie-monster-gone-psycho grunting!

I like it as well, and there are small distinctive qualities between different vocalists, but just not enough for one to go, "oh that is [death metal voclist]'s for sure!"

fletrejet, Saturday, 19 April 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

nar, I could pick Tim Wheeler's voice with great ease

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 19 April 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)
