are you ever momentarily swayed by the infomercial-like persuasiveness of a VH1 program about an artist that you had no prior interest in?

because for real that Ultimate Albums thing had me ready to cop the Alicia Keys record for a minute.

also, I think I have a crush on Lisa Marie Presley.

Lisa Marie Presley turned out to be slightly more interesting than I had anticipated, but her music does not impress me.
And how the hell did her album become an "Ultimate Album"...when did it get canonized? Its been out, what...a month?

It's because Keys (co-)writes her own songs, and that makes her creative and unique for some reason.

Also she has braids.

I used to think Lisa Marie was really blunt and humorless and not particularly smart. An overly defensive dullard. Now I just think she's blunt. I really like her, actually. She's not at all what I'd expected. For someone who had such a rarified upbringing, she's appears incredibly normal. Emphasis on "appears", of course.

But it was Diane Sawyer who changed my mind, not VH1.

I can't think of anyone in pop music I despise more than Alicia Keys right now. She was rude to Cyndi Lauper on the Grammys, she must die. I like the Kirstin Dunst parody of her on SNL.

The Bob Marley "Behind The Music" had me glued to the set.

"she's appears incredibly normal..."

Appearances must be decieving, she married Michael Jackson and her dad was Elvis and at least from what I have read she is an Elron; I just don't think normal fits into that equasion no matter how many times you divide by pi.

I have to admit I know nothing about her other than her being famous for being famous.

There's no way Lisa Marie's album sold 124,000 (or whatever it is) copies last week. Sounds like a classic Soundscan scam to me (much like Alicia Keys' album, which was put on top of the Billboard charts through sketchy means -- at least this has long been the rumor, anyway).

I read the RS and Blender LMP profiles, and I still don't have any idea who she is. Which speaks well for her, actually.

I've now seen the Lisa Marie Presley spot more time than I'd have liked, and she comes across as more smug and more passive about the events swirling around her every time. Who is buying this stuff?

i actually got my heart broken during the sad tale of CC Deville on the BTM for Poison. Seriously. It must be his voice.

beaty (beaty), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Who in HELL would buy a Lisa Presley album?
It's not even a quality issue, it's a marketing issue.
Who are her intended audience, anyway?

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

There are plenty of Elvis fanatics out there who would buy lil' Lisa Marie's album, just to keep the flame alive.

Honestly, I never thought it could happen, but the BTM on Journey was one-and-a-half hours of total bliss for me. When Neil Schon was talking about what a dick Steve Perry was, Perry says, "I was unsufferable, but the music was COMMANDING me."

I believe him. I really do.

i don't have cable/digital or whatever it's called these days, but...

of course, how can you not be sucked into all those programs? i greedily eat up all that shit.

my terribly shallow commentary re lisa marie...i like the way she looked around the time she married michael jackson...when she had the peroxide-looking hair

the way she looks in her video is horrifying. the annoying eyewear (the legwarmers of the aughties?) what are those called? j-lo glasses? she's sporting this awful porn star chic/sheryl crow look that's already totally dated and was crap to begin with...is it asking too much for today's popstars to be refreshingly plain-looking, like Christopher Cross?

on a slightly less shallow note: the music, unsurprisingly, is wretched. i felt bad watching the diane sawyer thing. she explained the poignant origins behind the songs...like 'this one's for my daughter and asks her not to make the same mistakes that i did' and 'this one's about the beautiful memories i have of my dad; please stop desecrating his name' and then they'd play a snippet of the song and it would be the worst-sounding crap.

on an even slightly less shallow note: i admired certain aspects of her personality as it came across in the interview and i give her major major props for coming from such an intense family background and being seemingly so "intact"...but the fact that she and her mom are so down with ronology makes me feel very sad for them. i'm not one to throw the word 'evil' around like george bush does, but that organization is truly evil.

back to being mean: lisa marie came across as the most wonderful person on the planet, if you compare her interview to the ones i've seen with mariah carey. i don't think ronology would do much for mariah, but some kind of major personality overhaul/reality check is definitely in order for her.
oh, and i feel compelled to mention that diane sawyer is incredibly annoying, which is no small potatoes if you think of the vast pantheon of annoying american television personalities. besides her general demeanor, i resented the way she insulted lisa marie each time she broached the michael jackson topic. she would ask "but michael jackson? come on, now? i mean WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!!" i don't want to get into to a big defense of michael jackson; no one would argue that he's not a freak, and i realize it's hypocritical of me to say this after just taking shots at lisa marie, mariah, and diane, but no matter how much $ and celebrity status you have, you remain a human being with feelings. i think it's unprofessional and uncalled for, for her as a "journalist" to speak of michael jackson as if he were just some bizarre curiosity that no sensible human being would ever want to interact with...
