Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Genesis

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 18 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul McCartney solo albums.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 18 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Genesis

"We Can't Dance" sure qualifies as crap, but not "tuneless". :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Peter Gabriel

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir you are going to hell...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

altho maybe you've already SEEN Genesis live...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Genesis and "90s" don't fit in the same thread anyway. Everybody who knows Genesis knows that Genesis were a 70s band and they might as well has broken up even before the 80s started.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

and yet they didn't

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Travis

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Genesis sold more records during the nineties than during the seventies

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I doubt so.
Remember, Genesis only released two albums during the 90s, one of which was a commercial flop.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

and yet they did; remember we can't dance goes MULTI-platinum whereas seventies Genesis tops out at gold (and rarely that)

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Everclear – I think this was the worst band spawned from the 1990s
Bush
Most of U2's stuff (like "Where the Strrets Have No Name" and "Staring at the Sun") – I would give exception for their Batman song and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" if that came out in the '90s
And that's all I can think of.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah and Marcy Playground, the guy even sounded like HE hated singing "sex and Candy". Wow.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Staring At The Sun" was actually the LEAST tuneless thing U2 did during the 90s. A great Britpop-influenced highly melodic song that pointed towards their excellent "All The You Can't Leave Behind" album

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Genesis have sold more albums than Elvis, The Beatles, Slim Whitman, Richard Clayderman, Yanni and Boxcar Willie - Com-fucking-bined.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil Collins the solo artist has sold a lot more albums than Genesis (which still doesn't make them even remotely as good as his 70s albums with Genesis btw)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil Collins has outsold Peter Gabriel also

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir you are absolutely crazy but hilariously funny

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

To Geir's credit, I can't think of any song I like by the bands he listed.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 18 April 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

How you could lump Public Enemy and De La Soul in with the likes of Snap and Technotronic staggers my mind.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 18 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Hongro, I agree with you that those acts are crap. But why are you trying to 'remember' them?

the pinefox, Friday, 18 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

public enemy and de la soul are crap - you are all mental!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

that should be the title of your next article, dave

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

they're both plainly very good... but yeah, it's got a nice ring to it!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't actually have to take the position, just make it an ode to Geir.

oops (Oops), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir in passive-aggressive shockah!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the pinefox 'wins'

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

an ode to geir? oh God help me! i'd have to get paid very well for it but yeah it would be funny!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Love the way he uses "actually" to shore up his opinions. He does it all the time. Actually, despite what he thinks of himself, he's often refuted by reality.

matt riedl (veal), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hongro, I agree with you that those acts are crap. But why are you trying to 'remember' them?

Note that this thread (even the typo in the word "THis") is almost entirely similar to another thread about 80s music further down. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

geir do you ever dance?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

How you could lump Public Enemy and De La Soul in with the likes of Snap and Technotronic staggers my mind.

Hmmm.. I agree that is a bit unfair. I mean, Snap's synth theme for "Rhythm Is a Dancer" was kind of nice after all. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Crystal Waters was great

stevem (blueski), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

... beacuse melody is the only musical criterium that matters, we all know that. Geir, are you a high school music teacher or something? I'm sure Mozart did som stuff that you'd like ...

Jay K (Jay K), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"huh huh Geir only likes melody huh huh huh"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 18 April 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Green Apple Quick Step

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

De La Soul didn't have tune? OH OKAY

David Allen, Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

thingy were *really* shit, eh?

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Gumball

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Saturday, 19 April 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow.
Just wow.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 19 April 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

De La Soul didn't have tune? OH OKAY

Nothing that wasn't already composed before the band was formed.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 19 April 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Silverchair
Our Lady Peace
The Verve Pipe

Famous Athlete, Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

silverchair is anything but tuneless

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing that wasn't already composed before the band was formed.

Newsflash! Geir hates sampling.

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir = dumbed-down Adorno

Keith McD (Keith McD), Sunday, 20 April 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Green Apple Quick Step wasn't that bad. Reloaded has some pretty good pop moments.

Catherine (Catherine), Sunday, 20 April 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It is actually you guys who are remiscent of Adorno. The idea that musical styles has the change and develop over time is soooo typical of Adorno's viewpoint.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 20 April 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that I've seen the other thread, I back Hongro. The other thread is ultra-dumb.

the pinefox, Sunday, 20 April 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get how Crystal Waters can be called "Tuneless"; I could understand is someone thought she was "crap", but "tuneless?"
Geir...a piece of advice: if the crack rock is bigger than your head, then its too much to smoke all in one sitting, 'kay?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 21 April 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

But the main problem with Adorno's hate of pop and jazz was that he was looking for the wrong thing: harmonic complexity.

Keith McD (Keith McD), Monday, 21 April 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

He wasn't looking for harmonic complexity, he was looking for lack of harmony.

There is no harmonic complexity in Schönberg (Adorno's favourite act). There is just a complete lack of any kind of harmony.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Crystal Waters=repetitive/minimalst=tuneless

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't you guys think you've worn out the arguments against Geir already? OH SIT DOWN HE DOESN'T LIKE DANCE MUSIC! HE ONLY LIKES PROG AND BRIT POP! PLEASE STOP, YOU'RE BLOWING MY MIND! Are you guys really this bored that instead of answering the question or explaining why you disagree with him, you just state the obvious repeatedly? The first time I came across him was when I was 14 fucking years old, and he hasn't changed a stitch since then.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the real question is how come Geir doesnt get tired of spouting this shit

stevem (blueski), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

For the same reason no one else here seems to tire of their own shit.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

well i've only been baiting and berating Geir for around 3 months now...and its almost over. i could never keep this up for years like he does.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

But he's not baiting you, see.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, why is no one understanding this? This is Geir. This is how he is. He's been like this since before I used my real name on the 'net. I've never found it amazing because at the time I first ran into him, it was the height of Britpop and half of A.M.A. were going on about melodies and revivalist 60s bullshit and glam rock and Radiohead were finally going a bit prog and everyone talked about that for like 4 years. He was just slightly more adherent to this standard.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

WU TANG CLAN AIN'T NUTHIN TO FUCK WITH

the Nza (nickalicious), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the baiting is always done tongue in cheek and for fun - no malice intended. in fact i was starting to enjoy Geir's comments esp. when he was saying synth-pop was the best music ever. its just when you're encountering someone with views so bewildering to you you feel compelled to argue them, even when it becomes apparent neither of you are going to change your mind so adamant you are about it...sure its futile ultimately but arguing is often fun and good exercise, i'm not taking it that seriously i dont think.

5 years from now (and probably beyond) people will be still probably be arguing with Geir about music - if he doesnt change the way he states his opinions then the way people feel compelled to take him to task over them will not change either

stevem (blueski), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

luckily (and he'll admit this, it's his raisin d'etruh as it were) Geir's losing the war. yes yes y'all.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, which war?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The War on Melody, obviously

oops (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I fear for the casualties.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

think of the massacre

stevem (blueski), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

lost at the battle of backthatazzzup:

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, and that prick Sting went AWOL! And last time I checked, all the members of Mike and the Mechanics had used their connections to get "deferrments"; so as usual, it was up to Flava Flav, Trugoy, ODP and Crystal Waters to do all the fighting for the overfed white guys.
Yeah, like we didn't see THAT coming.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Crystal Waters is great! Gypsy Woman, 100% Pure Love, and Party in the Ghetto are great dance songs from the '90s.

Leelee, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

tuneless crap from the '90s: jane's addiction

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Anti-90's threads are tuneless.

"Genesis and "90s" don't fit in the same thread anyway. Everybody who knows Genesis knows that Genesis were a 70s band and they might as well has broken up even before the 80s started."

But then we wouldn't have "In Too Deep."
