The Cure OP10

Instead of discussing Cure in the Billy Joel thread (a bit weird to discuss them there, I would say), I'll do an OP10 on them instead:

1. Let's Go To Bed
2. Friday I'm In Love
3. A Night Like This
4. Mint Car
5. Just Like Heaven
6. Mint Car
7. Kyoto Song
8. Boys Don't Cry
9. High
10.The Funeral Party

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

OP10 is dead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir you madman, you picked "Mint Car" TWICE!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops.

A good song it is though. :-)

Anyway, remove the 6 and let "In-Between Days" enter the list at #10.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Then I'm a necrophiliac! Humpa humpa!

Why Can't I Be You? [possibly the best vocal performance evah]
Just Like Heaven
Close To Me
A Night Like This
The Perfect Girl [an album track! eeek!]
Lovesong
Mint Car
Boys Don't Cry
High
Three Imaginary Boys [ANOTHER album track! egad!]

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"High" = great pick

Aaron A., Friday, 18 April 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to figure out which ten I should list. It's probably something like:

Siamese Twins
The Kiss
Like Cockatoos
The Same Deep Water As You
High (DEEPLY UNDERRATED SINGLE)
All Cats Are Grey
New Day
The Hanging Garden
This Twilight Garden
The Exploding Boy

Honestly, it changes every week.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I must confess I don't get "The Hanging Garden." Does the drumming remind you of Phil Collins?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

1. "A Night Like This"
2. "Cold"
3. "All Mine" (from Curiosity)
4. "Charlotte Sometimes (live version from Concert)
5. "Babble"
6. "All Cats are Grey"
7. "Push"
8. "Shiver & Shake"
9. "Pictures of You" (live version from Entreat)
10. "Man Inside My Mouth"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess Lol Tolhurst had spent the last year listening to "Face Value". :-)

In fact, I don't think so. Collins' drumming is less out-of-controll than Tolhurt's drumming on that album. I've grown to appreciate the "Pornography" album over time though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

rough draft from my head:

homesick (my OPO)
high
disintegration
boy's don't cry
a night like this
in your house
all cats are grey
the kiss
just like heaven
2 Late

Aaron A., Friday, 18 April 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

What makes "High" underrated?

A great single, but, I mean, they haven't had that many UK Top 10 singles, but "High" was one of them.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

1. "All Cats are Grey"

Uhm. . .

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 18 April 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"High" went nowhere in the US, though. That's the context I was thinking of.

Honestly, I'm never talking about Genesis again. Grrr. But yes, the frenetic drumming is perfection, plus that BASSLINE!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

High made the top 40 in the US. Kasey Kasem introduced it to me for a couple weeks. He even told a story about a girl getting to see the video early thanks to the make-a-wish-foundation. The Cure even sent her a special birthday message! And now on with the countdown...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

IT DID?????? Where the fuck was I?

STUPID FUCKING FRESHMAN YEAR OF COLLEGE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 April 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"A Forest"
"Charlotte Sometimes"
"Other Voices"
"The Holy Hour"
"Let's Go to Bed"
"The Last Day of Summer"
"Why Can't I Be You?"
"Jumping Someone Else's Train"
"Inbetween Days"
"Pictures of You"

Plus a few extra "I'm cheating here" songs:

"Mint Car"
"The Walk"
"Just One Kiss"
"The Hanging Garden"
"The Figurehead"
"Primary"
"A Reflection"

*sighs* That was so hard to do, narrowing it down to *that*. And now I must depart to listen to "Bloodflowers" once again.

I *BIG HEART* THE CURE.

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah for Dee! Dan and I, the Cure happy fanatics of this place, welcome you to our coterie. We must fight vigilantly against those who would mock.

Dan's is OTM for me, substituting "A Strange Day" for "Hanging Garden", though. But all GREAT picks, Dan.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, can't be lazy about this - Here's my (current) list:

A Strange Day
Like Cockatoos
Just One Kiss
All Cats Are Grey
Play For Today
The Same Deep Water As You
The Exploding Boy
Fascination Street
The Blood
The Perfect Girl

gonna go and play all these right.now.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I have to add to mine:
- "How Beautiful You Are"
- "Like Cockatoos"

- "Funeral Party"
- "I'm Cold" (the b-side)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 19 April 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I want to swap out "The Hanging Garden" for "A Strange Day" too!

ONly PIck ten CURE Videos:
1. Charlotte Sometimes - because I had a crush on whoever the bassist was at the time. Holy hannah. And I know he looks like Morpehus here but that's alright with me. And the girl's acting is pretty endearing in an amateurish way. And man, a haunted boarding school is such a prefect idea.
2. Why Can't I Be You? - Why is Tolhurst in blackface? Why is Rob dessed as Humpty Dumpty? Why is Tolhurst mugging in that bee suit? Man, why did they even let him in the videos?
3. The Lovecats - Rob at his peak of adowability. Their kind of mid-period videos (after they started wearing makeup but before the plot synopsis reads "throw glitter and hearts everywhere and act like a floppy tart") avoid the imminent threat of corniness by virtue of their spare sweetness, and also the greatness of the songs from that time.
4. Lullaby -Rob gets eaten by a big cunt.
5. The Walk - More videos need old ladies signing out the lyrics. What was Rob's deal with all the old ladies? He seemed to have a thing for them. I mean, he had some pretty questionable taste in a lot of things, ie Betty Boop. Anyway, this video is noteworthy as the one exception to Tolhurst's general state of being totally embarrassing.
6. Caterpillar - For its silliness, those guys are ROCKIN' OUT in that greenhouse!
7. Let's Go To Bed - My very favorite video and a favorite song, too.
8. Jumping Someone Else's Train - I saw this as a kid at the same time I was watching Shining Time Sation pretty frequently, so they are intertwined in my mind.
9. 10:15 Saturday Night - They are so young and they look so unsure of themselves. Then they DISAPPEAR at the end.
10. Hanging Garden - That bassist again, yes. And once again the sort of sweet, spare, low-budget weirdness in the masks and stop motion.

1)If Only Tonight We Could Sleep
2)Like Cockatoos
3)All Cats Are Grey
4)Primary
5)The Drowning Man
6)One Hundred Years
7)Siamese Twins
8)Close To Me

10)Killing An Arab

Jamie Fake (the pirate king), Friday, 28 May 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

oh boy, there's something about this OPX that I feels like...hmm, exhuming something that is either pre-determined, or just odd, or just high-school note-pad-ish, or break-up letter-ish, or just unnecessary.
No disrespect to the thread, but naming "Charlotte Sometimes" as a favourtite Cure song just feels a little...

grr. someone try to explain what I'm getting at.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 28 May 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

1. M
2. The Lovecats
3. Fire in Cairo
4. See the Children (Don't know if this counts since it's technically by The Easy Cure, but I fucking love this song.)
5. Three Imaginary Boys
6. A Strange Day
7. All Cats Are Grey
8. Plastic Passion
9. Boys Don't Cry
10. 2 Late

Weirdly enough Disintegration is one of my favorite records but none of the songs from it would get into the top 10 for me if it's just down to judging on songs by themselves.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 28 May 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok I'll play:

1. All Cats Are Grey
2. Lament
3. Sinking
4. M
5. Push
6. Like Cockatoos
7. New Day
8. A Strange Day
9. Shake Dog Shake
10. In Your House

I was this close to chucking 'Labyrinth' or 'The Promise' in, btw. Sure, 'The Cure' ain't too hot, but those two are absolute diamonds amongst the muck. 'Lost' isn't bad either.

Just got offed, Sunday, 13 May 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

I also like 'Us And Them'.

Just got offed, Sunday, 13 May 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

There's also "Anniversary", "Before 3", "Truth, Happiness and Beauty", "Fake" and "Going Nowhere" (I seriously don't understand why they didn't use the Japanesse version as the main version everywhere because the three extra songs make a masive difference tot he pacing and feel of the whole album).

HI DERE, Sunday, 13 May 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

'Anniversary' reminds me too much of Pink Floyd's 'Wearing The Inside Out' (from 'The Division Bell') for me to appreciate it much. Listen to them both and you'll see what I mean.

Before Three and Going Nowhere I don't really like, unfortunately, and the other two I haven't heard.

Ahh, finally somebody shares my love for 'Happy the Man'!

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

"The Promise" is better than "Watching Me Fall" because its ebb-and-flow control between the choruses and verse is a more interesting contrast than "WMF"'s all-out assault; sonically, "WMF" is closer in spirit to "Us and Them" (which I didn't think worked as well because it didn't really feel like it went anywhere, plus it contains the unfortunate "the doleful cant of a bigot" line).

HI DERE, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

The Promise wins because the guitar effects are astoundingly good, and the build-ups are superbly managed. Each chorus feels like a massive hill has been climbed and a nuclear-torn city lies beneath on the other side.

'Watching Me Fall' is closer in spirit to Disintegration, I'd say, with less emphasis on climax and more on a continual state of despair. Pornography (the song, and the album) use the 'climax' motif, which is why I prefer it to Disintegration, and why I prefer 'The Promise' to 'Watching Me Fall' (and the rest of 'The Cure'). It's more interesting, and they do it better.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

'Labyrinth' is like a mini version of 'The Promise', except the climax comes at the start of the final verse, rather than the chorus.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

"Disintegration" is ALL about climax; it is carried throughout the vocal, both in terms of structure (each successive adds four couplets to the previous verse's length) and in delivery as well as in the additional glass-crashing sound effects introduced throughout the third verse and the increasing musical variations in the band's arrangement as the song goes on.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

climax = "it's easier for me / to get closer to heaven / than ever feel whole again"

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

I just realized that I intended to write "Disintegration" is ALL about building to climax but left out the "building to" part.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't mean the song, I meant the album! Generally, the album as a whole describes a state of being, and although there are miniature climaxes, they're subtle and they don't (on the whole) wrench your head off. The album's brilliance comes from its manipulations of mood, not from its wholesale shock and awe. The song 'Disintegration' itself does the whole 'climax' thing more than most on that album, whilst my very favourite song on the whole record (apparently NOT on the original release for reasons of space), 'Homesick', orchestrates by far the most blatant 'build', which is then complemented by an equally graceful fade-out.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

louis, have you heard the rest of bloodflowers yet?

for me, 'watching me fall' is definitely the highlight. it's just so massive - the whole time threatening to suck you into a massive vacuum. reminds me of the bliss of 'from the edge of the deep green sea' in that respect.

Charlie Howard, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

I HAVE all of Bloodflowers, but whenever I consider playing it, I just listen to "Watching Me Fall" again. :D

Just got offed, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

oh man what the FUCK was i talking about a year ago

Just got offed, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

that's sort of my story with the record these days too. i have a special fondness for the first two tracks but then i can barely be bothered letting the rest of it play through. i do like the guitar hook in 'maybe someday' though

Charlie Howard, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

actually, i thought you made a lot of sense on this thread (though i wonder if you still like 'the top' now as much as you seemed to back then...)

Charlie Howard, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:40 (seventeen years ago)

This is the sentence I was taking particular issue with: 'Watching Me Fall' is closer in spirit to Disintegration, I'd say, with less emphasis on climax and more on a continual state of despair.

And yeah, "The Top" is still the fucking bomb. That Cure closing tracks poll was fucking tough. I voted for "The Promise" in the end (ha!) because it's fucking immense and I figured it would be underappreciated, but "End" is probably the best closer, "The Top" their most chilling song, and "Pornography" their most psychotic.

Just got offed, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago)

i think i went the safe route and voted for 'untitled' in that poll. but i should have gone with 'end' or 'faith'. i think i need to remind myself how 'the promise' even sounds ;)

you're right about 'pornography' being their most psychotic track. it brings a bleak, harrowing close to one of the most isolating and isolated records i can think of.

and yeah, disintegration has climax written all over it. the title track is just one giant, swelling climax in itself really.

Charlie Howard, Friday, 6 June 2008 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

Don't sleep on "The Loudest Sound".

HI DERE, Friday, 6 June 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

I gave "The Promise" another try the other night and I already can't remember what it sounds like.

baaderonixx, Friday, 6 June 2008 07:45 (seventeen years ago)

Weird, some people hate it (Mark Prindle describes it as "aggressively boring") but I can remember virtually the entire thing.

I've said it before but "Pornography" was my favourite album of all time when I was about 8 years old, lol was I gonna be one crazy customer. It's still by far my favourite Cure record. I don't find it so isolating, perhaps, as independently impressive; it creates its very peculiar edifice of sound and emotion, building it along subtly varying paths until the cacophonous collapse.

Just got offed, Friday, 6 June 2008 10:44 (seventeen years ago)

the best thing about Pornography is the sense of bleak fury sustained throughout the album; when Robert sings " is it always like this?" at the end of " Siamese twins" it's a real gut-wrenching moment that you think is the height of despair, but no, you have the entire second side left just in case you weren't ready to spray arterial blood all over the walls.

HI DERE, Friday, 6 June 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

The Figurehead is the most effective piece of theatre on that album IMO. When the music suddenly drops out and RS sings "I could lose myself in Chinese art and American girls" it's one of the most wonderful evocations of utter self-abandon on tape. I mean "A Strange Day" is fucking NECESSARY after that song, because at least we have the comfort of unrelenting beauty to stay the killing hand. The whole thing is sequenced magnificently.

Just got offed, Friday, 6 June 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

the sequencing of most of their albums is impeccable; I think wms is the only one that really falters and a lot of that is because the songs aren't strong enough.

HI DERE, Friday, 6 June 2008 19:45 (seventeen years ago)

this is absolutely true, and they are an "albums" band more so than most; that i was brought up on them has probably shaped me into an "albums" sort of person. maybe.

Just got offed, Friday, 6 June 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

i agree that they have a fine knack for sequencing and most of the albums, due to the uniform quality of the songs throughout, do suggest that they are indeed and "albums" band. however, albums like 'kiss me, kiss me' and the mostly brilliant 'wish' have a number of weaker tracks on them that somewhat tarnish the pursuit of cohesiveness and unity of those albums.

is how I'm feeling today. Am beginning to realise that I might like The Top as much as Pornography (whose songs are best suited by each other's company). Shake Dog Shake, Wailing Wall, Give Me It and The Caterpillar were all STRONGLY considered for inclusion. I also wanted to include The Baby Screams but seriously there's so much good stuff here. Not even A Strange Day survived the cull.

I've never spent so long deliberating over a single OP10, I hope The Cure feel proud of themselves

The only *absolute* dead-certs were The Top, The Figurehead, The Drowning Man and End. Which must make them The Cure's best songs, or something. Although when I listened to In Your House again that became a dead-cert pretty much instantly.

I'm trying to think of what my current list is. Something like this:

The Same Deep Water As You
Lament
Home
This Twilight Garden
New Day
Like Cockatoos
It's Over
Three Imaginary Boys
The Lovecats
A Strange Day

I am over wieght and I have angelical quilities (HI DERE), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

Plainsong
A Strange Day
Like Cockatoos
A Forest
Prayers for Rain
A Night Like This
In Between Days
All Cats Are Grey
M
If Only Tonight We Could Sleep

I'm pretty happy with this list. Its not too daring but for me its the truth.

the one from Mixed Up, the A side on the 12" that says Close To Me Remix on the cover. Not sure if that's the Closer or Closest mix without pulling it out.

regular version on Head On The Door

Extended Remix on the 12"
