the ILM goldberg/15-minute hate

there are certain musicians, bands, and genres the very mention of whom inspire much hatred amongst ILMers. it's almost pavlovian -- randomly mention Billy Joel, U2, Frank Zappa, Sigur Ros, electroclash, in any thread (or create a thread about any of the foregoing) and watch the fireworks explode. it's almost pavlovian!

i'm not pointing any fingers or saying that this is necessarily bad -- sometimes it inspires some good writing about why a certain musician or genre gets one so angry. and even pissy venting has its uses. i'm just interested in the phenomenon itself, not any particular manifestation of same -- why the hate for such things, people?

drat ILM formatting! after "Billy Joel, U2, Frank Zappa, Sigur Ros, electroclash," i meant to put "fill-in-the-blank." in other words, this thread isn't listed to any of the aforementioned (though folks can talk about why they lead them onto such inspired heights of absolute hatred!)

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 19 April 2003 06:04 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forgot the grateful dead.

brian badword (badwords), Saturday, 19 April 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

though maybe nobody around here even thinks they're worth the fireworks.

brian badword (badwords), Saturday, 19 April 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the Dead too. the Dead absolutely belong in this thread (KATE TO THREAD!)

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 19 April 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

why the hate for such things, people?
Because one needs to re-educate the ones who haven't joined the group of (idiot) savants.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 19 April 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The hate is just...there, dude. ILMers have strong feelings about music in general, it's only natural that they'd have strong feelings about artists whose approach they dislike, too.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 19 April 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

but often the hate is not for the artists themselves but the hype and attention they garner, apparently undeservedly

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 19 April 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

damn that Billy Joel hype!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 19 April 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

well he's just SO over-rated isnt he?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 19 April 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

He is when he comes to town with Elton John. Ew.

I agree with the "reaction against hype, not music" statement. Certain posters have a way of deriding bands or musical styles in a way that blatantly screams "I hate this because the wrong people like it."

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 19 April 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

one can never really hate the musician, only his/her aura.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 19 April 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

goldberg?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 19 April 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's "Goldstein", but it's been a long time since i read any Orwell.

There's lots of stuff to revile, but i won't elevate any of it by listing it here. Besides, getting a monolithic opinion of ILM is like getting blood from a turnip.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Saturday, 19 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Goldberg the wrestler? I wouldn't know, but I'm assuming he is a well-known denigrator of Zappa?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh right, from wrestling. Where Americans gather in sports arenas and cheer the stomping of Arabs, Russians, Jews, etc.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, Goldberg has always been a big hero when I've watched. And it seems a while since I've seen a bad guy Russian or Arab (ah, the glory days of the Iron Sheik!).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, now it's all about hating French people. And Italian-Americans. Thank god for NOAH.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Goldberg is amazing. I heard he's making a comeback. Does he have more than two moves (the spear, the jackhammer) this time?

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Goldberg...The GOALIE!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, he has the Ridiculous Facial Expression.

only Goldberg I care about is that guy on the left. Though this pic comes from a strangely homoerotic film called "Heavyweights" that Shaun Weiss (the man behind Goldberg The Goalie) appeared in.
