I LOVE FLANGE (nb. this is not a Callum thread)

Musicians and listeners of music, what are your favourite effects to use/listen to?

Mine is flange; if you have it low you get that amazing dreamy airplane taking off sound, higher and it becomes a frantic jelly of paychedelic noise-bore that kind of slinks and sucks like a broken hoover. When applied to drums it's even better, like a collapsing stair case or something as evinced on Throbbing Gristle's 'Still Walking', the one that sounds like an asthma inhalor. (similie overload!) yeah i know this is a bit of a rockist question, but go!!!!!

also my favourite

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing is better than chorus + delay for those dreamy soundscapes. Good for bass as well.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Saturday, 19 April 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i HATE flange - it sounds like a cassette getting fucked up. It's also pretty cheesy. I don't like effects much - but reverb always rules

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 19 April 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

flange equates a couple of things in my mind:

1. retro hippie bluesy stoner rock
2. contrived post-rock imitators

i think you're right that it sounds good on drums, need more examples to make a better statement, though. the cure rings a bell, particularily the stuff that was recorded by that dude who owns the castle ... michael hedges?

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Saturday, 19 April 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

...and on "Too Fast For Love" by Motley Crue. Point and match.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 19 April 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

flange sounds best on pounding techno/trance tracks - e.g. Ravesignal's 'Horsepower' or Way Out West's Domination' or Vitalic's 'La Rock' - the latter two dont have it but you can have fun adding it to them in wave editor programs. as for flanged drums, check Chemical Brothers' 'Song To The Siren' and er, feel the rush

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What in god's name does the bassist in Lightning Bolt use? I like that.

original bgm, Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah that's what i want to know. I think it's some sort of pitch shifting pedal that you use like a wah

ss, Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Give me a bit of lowpass twiddling any day.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I would think there are about 20 distortion pedals on top of that too, heh.

original bgm, Saturday, 19 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

In order:

Distortion
Ring Modulation
Echo
Reverb
Phase
Wah/bandpass
Chorus/Flange (which are more or less the same thing in different amounts)

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Saturday, 19 April 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

What is ring modulation? I always thought it was just chorus...

ss, Saturday, 19 April 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

don't know, but 'Envelope Follower' always sounded like the best name
I imagine it to be some kind of delayed filtered echoed wah-wah - like turning your bass into a part-invisible rubbery snake

Paul (scifisoul), Saturday, 19 April 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ps. if you hate flange you hate boredoms = blasphemy!

ss, Saturday, 19 April 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

TOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maynards Voice!!!! Wow

Aj, Saturday, 19 April 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing ever beats those wonderful 1967-sounding phaser effects.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 19 April 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Back when I smoked a lot of pot I was a big fan of the Electro-Harmonix Small Ston phase shifter. I think it's because when you're high your thoughts are all whooshy just like a phase-shifted sound. The guys in my band would get pissed, like "No, Dan, we all ready put the phase shifter on the guitar, bass, mics and drums, we're not putting it on the fucking keys too."

Flange is ok, I like it on snare rolls (Dead Boys "Sonic Reducer") and when Eddie Van Halen uses it.

I want them to come out with a flange/phase pedal has a rocker like a wahwah so you can control the sweep (not just the rate, no LFOs in this, please) in real time.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 19 April 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

tape echo and spring reverb.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Sunday, 20 April 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ring Modulation is a kinda tricky effect to describe. As i recall, it puts the input signal through a Fourier transformation based on a carrier wave (which is either an internal LFO or can be an external signal, but an oscillator works best, as it's a regular cycling signal). What does this mean in reality? Go to www.lovetone.com and check out the Ring Stinger. There's samples that give you an idea what they're capable of.

Total sonic devastation, among other things.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Sunday, 20 April 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Geir,I love '60's phasing.Band pass 'Disco Filtering' is also a favourite effect.

Paul R (paul R), Sunday, 20 April 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Outboard fender reverb/Dallas Arbiter Fuzz/hole in speaker

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Sunday, 20 April 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the filters on most Bangalter productions - its like the 'roller disco washing machine' button or something

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 20 April 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, phaser is best when combined with mellotron flutes, guitars and hi-hats recorded backwards, sitars and lyrics about tin soldier kings and pink elephants flying through marshmallow skies.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 20 April 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to mention nursery rhyme-like melodies, of course, those must be part of the music.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 20 April 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Van Halen "And the Cradle Will Rock"
Van Halen "Unchained"

Who's Callum?

CaLum, Sunday, 20 April 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all about tremolo baby! Especially panned tremolo. It's pure delight.

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Sunday, 20 April 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the best effect algorithm evah is chorus->delay->reverb

Mike Taylor (mjt), Sunday, 20 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

lyrics about tin soldier kings and pink elephants flying through marshmallow skies.

But lyrics aren't part of the music!

man, Monday, 21 April 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Delay and filters can be used as a musical instruments. All other effects are good as audio tone shaping, but I don't think they can be "played" in the same way as delay or filters.
