Taking Sides: Transvision Vamp or The Primitives

The Dirty Vicar says:

Transvision Vamp - would-be celebrity tossers with no good songs

The Primitives - at least some good tunes. 'Crash', most of the second album, great live, striking great blows for short people in pop.

What do *you* thing?

This is no contest.

With Transvision Vamp, the question is whether they were good for anything - whether anything can be redeemed or salvaged from their career. (I think the answer is: yes, a little bit, a few things, for nostalgia's sake - but most of the records don't hold up at all.)

The Primitives will always be close to my heart. They're one of my absolute favourite bands of the late 80s. I must admit, I think I'd struggle to convince others of their worth - it's too much a personal thing, a trick of space and time, and even I can often hear a tinniness in the records and artlessness in the songwriting. But all their records had - at the very least - good moments. The first LP alone has a sound - feedback, 60s surf in the 80s, twanging and psychedelia - that I never quite got my head around, never entirely mastered or comprehended. And there was more to come. The Lazy LP with its absurd plenitude of title brackets: '(We've) Found A Way (To The Sun)'. The growl of 'Sick Of It', announced with Tracy's latest hair-colour on the cover of a Melody Maker that always makes me think of the rain in July in 1989. I think that Roberts had been allowed to go and do the interview: he said there was a new song called 'Submarine', and the band said, no, it's 'Summer Rain'. He called 'Sick of It' 'Sick Of You', and asked why it wasn't 'Sick Of It All': syllables matter, Tracy admonished. The 'Beat version' of 'Way Behind Me' with its glorious 1964 guitar intro. The crashing intro of 'Lead Me Astray'. The bewildering 'Hello Jesus'. But always what came first. 'Out Of Reach' - those swinging drums and loose rhythm guitar part, that flying breezy instrumental; a record which perhaps I shouldn't forget to ask them to play when I die.

Heroes.

my impression was always that the primitives were worthy guitar pop underachievers, wheras transvision vamp were the dumbest trashiest band ever to pay their way into the charts.

on that basis it has to be transvision vamp. if you don't agree, well baby i don't care.

Wait! what abt the darling buds? The parachute men? er....

Actually, this is an easy one. I listened to the prims 1st album quote recently, and it's grate. Some super JaMC-type guitar, k3wl melodies, good singing etc. The second album is only 1/2 good IMO, but is surely worth looking out for, 'cuz you'll have to try hard to pay more than 3 quid for it. As mr pinefox points out, the '64-style version of - er, hang on, wasn't it "all the way down" is r0x0r, and the bloke (forget name...) singing on "Shine" (Yes!!! An indie band releases trax0r called "shine"!!! = doomed!!!) is v.nice & sub0syd psychedelic. After that, I only have a couple of singles, which are OK - one has a good live trax0r on the b-side.

The Transvision Vamp were truly horrible. They managed to namecheck Halo Jones in one of their sones, and they still sux0red....Ms james is rowr, but wasn't then. Wither now tracy tracy, andrea darlingbud et al??

The nme review of the third Prim's album features one of my fave lines from a review ever "The Primitives are flogging the space where a dead horse should be!"

Darling Buds were fun, but sucked live and they had the misfortune to come up with the album title "Erotica" at the same time as some American bird.

MarkH, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Weeellll...I saw the Darling Buds twice. The first time, they were absolutely incredible! They ROCKED!!! The second time...oh, gawd....we left early, which is something I VERY rarely do...

I saw the prims on the tour for their second album, at the now-a-big- hole-in-the-ground newcastle mayfair. They were great....

Norman Fay, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I saw the Primitives just before "Crash", and while it wasn't quite a case of the audience being outnumbered by the band it was pretty close. They were great - the Ramones with Debbie Harry on vocals (only a dodgy Coventry version of both, of course). I loved all the early singles, especially the songs with the guitarist on vocals ("Lazy" and "Laughing Up My Sleeve").

Didn't TVV get Elvis Costello to write one of their albums?

Andrew Norman, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The Primitives were always a personal fave of mine. What Pinefox said, except that my favorite tracks (apart from the magnificent Crash) are "Way Behind Me" and "Secrets". Secrets, in particular, has this perfect pop tinged with foreboding and dread. With the nonsense vocalese, the shy and slightly daring chorus, it feels like the uptempo reply to "my little secret".

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ah! Elvis Costello wrote the songs on Wendy James's comeback album, which was embarrassing. The single was called "london's Brilliant".

MarkH, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Wendy James seemed a woman out of time in many ways. Flashing your tits about and being a bit of a post-feminist tart wasn't deemed acceptable in the 80s (for British women, at least). If she had been around in the mid-90s things might have been different. The music was shit though.

I couldn't really care less about the Primitives.

Nick, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Wendy James may have been better looking than Tracey Tracey, but that's it. The Primitives' music was at least listenable. T.Vamp were crap.

alex in nyc, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah "London's brilliant when it's raining/Everyone moaning and complaining" - classic lyrics there Mr Costello. I only know because a friend of mine found it in a bargain bin for 5p, and gave it to me as a birthday present. Bastard.

And norman, I didn't understand a *word* of that first message of yours

Steve.n., Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I saw The Primitives open for the Sugarcubes around the time of their second album. It was supposed to be a double bill, but it seemed like a pretty awkward one, and the lead singer(I've forgotten her name) did not seem too impressed. I don't know if it was a result of that 'attitude' that British bands are supposed to have when touring North America, but they appeared pretty damned bored, and she was taking more time trading insults with the audience members to concentrate very much on anything else. Not to mention that she had this little fan that blew her bleached hair up in this 'attractive pop-video' way which I found pretty annoying. In spite of these sticking points I was still impressed enough that I went out and bought the album, and I have to say that I credit this mostly to guitarist and songwriter (again name forgotten)who performed a couple of good numbers, and he appeared to be the only one putting any effort into the proceedings. Anyone know what he's up to now?

Like many bands that I listened to around this time, listening to these albums now leaves me a little cold. Somebody mentioned 'tinny' and this pretty much somes it up for the production. I never really got the feeling that they knew exactly what they wanted to be. I don't think I sensed any irony in their presentation and therefore I wouln't compare them to Blondie in any more than a superficial way.

As a sideline, Bjork used that little fan to blow up her skirt, which was charming and cute, and quintessentially Bjork. I know which I prefered.

As for Transvision Vamp, they were the type of band that only those kids for whom everything 'BritPop' equalled 'good' would have been fooled into buying.

Alan Hunt, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't have it anymore, but I used to have the third album by the Primitives, and I remember "Empathise" and "Cold Enough To Kill" as being charming psyche-shoegazer ballad-pop, like if Lush had sold out in '92 instead of '96.

Norman Fay: sorry, of course, yes, it was 'All The way Down'. The track was on the 12" of 'Way Behind Me'. Or was it?

I like the Darling Buds OK for the sake of the eternal 1989 (it's still going in my heart), but their first LP was not as good as the Prims'. Funnily enough, their 2nd LP was really rather good, from where I was standing. I even ripped off its lyrics once or twice. But the DBs really deserve another thread.

I can't see the connection between Transvision Vamp and Britpop. EC's songwriting on NOW AIN'T THE TIME FOR YOUR TEARS was below his standard, certainly, but that doesn't mean it was below everyone else's, cos his standard is above everyone else's. There is a thread about that record, and if I was Nick D I would direct you to it.

I must remember to tell Nick D I couldn't care less about one of his favourite things.

I just recently dug out the Primitives' _Pure_ to listen to, as that's one of my three summer albums, ie can only be played in summer and gives me nice flashbacks to summers past. The other two are the Dead Milkmen's _Big Lizard in My Backyard_ and XTC's _Skylarking_; make of that what you will.

Anyway, the Primitives, natch. _Lovely_ and _Pure_ are both fantastic, and the early singles collection, if you can find it, is well worth your time. Best damn JAMC wannabe ever.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

TVV - 'Andy Warhol's Dead' - this has to be one of the most ridiculous Warhol tributes i've heard... Didn't even have a problem w/them until i heard this and started laughing uncontrollably when Wendy James tried to act as NY tough cool as Debby Harry. Dudsville!! Primitives - classics! 'Crash' - lovely! I also have a soft spot for 'Through the Flowers' for its breathy, airy pop sound that will always remind me of summer. Sigh (ok - enough stupid sentimentalizing)...

Not anymore, I agree. But this was back in the day when she was still sort of shy and unassuming. Not yet a **STAR** like she is now. Although, having said that, almost anyone would look shy in comparison to attention seeker Einar who was running around the stage screaming ridiculous incomprehensible or badly tranlated lyrics. I never figured out which it was.

We've Got a Fuzzbox and We're Gonna Use it. But if I have to pick between the other two it's definitely the Primitives ('Buzz Buzz' and all that).

if you like the first primitives record then thank paul sampson, he was not only the producer but played most of the guitar and finished most of the songs. then he disappeared and the second record was not quite as good. never heard the third.

now paul sampson is having fun making honeyrider sound a lot like a california dude version of the primitives version of jesus and mary chain.

Well I was in the next studio when they did "Lovely" and Keith you're talking shit about Paul Sampson. The Primitives were a great live pop band in, and were truly exciting in the early days. Transvision Vamp were nothing but manufactured record industry pap. In fact the comparison is frankly insulting... I think things went astray for Tracy and Paul when they signed to RCA. They had the hits to begin with, but the art started to slip away right after the album. I actually think they were on their way back to the right path when RCA dropped them in '91. "You Are the Way" and "Earth Thing" were great. And does anyone recall their cover of the Stones/Marianne Faithfull classic "As Tears Go By"???

Brighton, 1986. Room in shared house to rent. Annoying bottle blond girl and her 'punk' boyfriend decide its theirs, even though we don't want to live with them. 'Don't worry, I'll fake the references' she said. So we ratted on her to the landlord.

Once I could have held you
And never let you go
Now I see you calling me back
And I really do not know
"Velveteen, I want you back."
Things change and people change
And my mind just gets hazy
I truly thought I knew you
How wrong can you be
"Velveteen, I want you back."
Velveteen, Velveteen
Velveteen, Velveteen, Velveteen
Well it's been a while
And things have been wild
But I've learnt to smile
Yeah now I smile
I can't spend my life
Waiting to get hurt
When you pay the price
You own the dirt
But I still think of you
Yeah I think of you
Think of you
Do you think of me
Think of me
Like I think of you
Well the days go by
And the wheels still turn
When the night comes down
The fire still burns
And the mind is strong
But the heart it yearns
Then the pain was gone
But it's now returned
"Velveteen, I want you back.
Velveteen, I want you back."
It was deep in the night
When he came through my door
He came to my room
At the end of the hall
He lent over the bed
And kissed my forehead
He brushed the hair from my eyes
And then began to slide...
Slide his hand down
Underneath the sheets
'Till he reached my waist
He didn't waste no time
He put his hand on my thigh
He put his thoughts in my mind
And I drowned in his eyes
As we began to slide... Then he whispered soft
Like the sea in a shell
"Yeah I been away
Where I been I can't tell
But I got something for you
Yeah it's a memory
Hey Velveteen
Do you remember me..."
"Hey yeah I remember
I remember you
Hey yeah I remember
Remember you"
"You know I really want you
Yeah I love you too
You know I really want you
Velveteen."
"But you don't really love me
I know you say you do
But you never really loved me
Loved me true."
"I swear I really love you
I swear I want you too
I swear I really love you
Velveteen."
Velveteen, Velveteen
Velveteen, Velveteen
Now the past is back
Knocking on my door
Breathing passion
Declaring all
Shining like a ring
With a hidden curse
Sayin' the same things
Just in different words
"I want you back."
Velveteen
"I want you back."
Velveteen
Velveteen, Velveteen
Velveteen, Velveteen
Velveteen, Velveteen
Velveteen, Velveteen
Velveteen, Velveteen

Velveteen
"Velveteen
I'm here for you
Velveteen
Always yours
You will be mine
Until the day..."

doesnt included the "sexy" whispering there tho
aw how can you hate on transvision vamp!!!! they are so stuopid and dumb and pretty cool.."the whole marilyn/jfk/jimmy dean obssesion was ahead of it's time" OTM

tvv still totally suck, and i still like the prims and the darling buds, thank you.

Tracy primitive and Andrea darling bud both do seem to have completely vanished off the face of the music biz earth. What happened to them? They were such good singers!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Andrea Darling bud = tv presenter, stage actress

Tracy & PJ Court from the primitives = not really very much by the looks of things.

I just used Google (shrugs) several prims fansites seem to link to darling buds fansites for some reason, heh.

I listened to the 1st 2 Primitives albums and the 1st 2 Darling Buds albums last night. 2 good DBs songs are "Lets Go Round There" and er the one from "Crawdaddy" with David Cross from King Crimson playing on it. The rest of it, after all these years is perhaps a little bit unexceptional. The drummer was a bit, I dunno, lacking in some way.

The Primitives albums still sound great to me, good tunes, really crisp snappy playing, clever arrangements. I still like them!

There is a yahoo group dedicated to andrea darling bud, would you believe. 47 members. incl 1 new member in the last week! It must be pretty weird to have been a member of almost-made-it group like the prims or the DBs and to look back from now at yr brief moment when the edge of the spotlight beam kind of briushed against you. I was kind of weirded out by the fact that the primitives first album is something like 17 years old! Fuck!

...anyway, what I won't forget is how much I enjoyed seeing both bands live back in their day. Gimmie gimmie indie pop!

One question that suddenly occurs to me - I have never heard either band's 3rd album. Are either of them worth looking out for?

darling buds - erotica is ace.

far far better than crawdaddy. they added a more layered guitar sound to their lazy sunny sounds .. basically predated the whole joy zipper sound ..

its a damn fine album and if seen in a cheap bin should be snapped up immediately.

i always prefered Darling Buds over Prims .. i saw the Prims (Goodbye Mr Mackenzie on support!) and they were lacklustre (probably due to the lack of volume) to the degree i left early to go and catch The Bachelor Pads set at some seedy club in Leeds .. whereas i didn't have such problems when i saw Darling Buds ..

A hidden gem from the Prims is the track "Noose" which was a b-side to "Sick Of It All". You can download it from that website. It's a duet. Some of that second album period stuff is really great. "All The Way Down" is their most Mary Chainish one but it still sounds good.
