META: Posting album cover images instead of just typing their names.

This seems to be taking off as a practice around here, and I wanted to bring it up because, well, for my part I'm sort of against it:

(a) They make the pages load slowly
(b) They make it slightly harder for people to look at the forum from work
(c) They're a favorite of indie boards, because if the album title isn't on the cover or is in small type people say "wait, what is that" and then the original poster swoops in and goes "hahaha you're so lame you don't even have this record, what's wrong with you."

I don't know if anyone else is against this or not, but I figure it's worth raising the issue. Obviously no one's gonna stop you if you want to post covers, but they do make it somewhat harder for a lot of people to use the forum. Especially at work. Especially if you're talking about the Dwarves.

I mean, obviously images are great and wonderful and funny quite often, and sometimes you're actually talking about the images, in which case A-OK, but when it's like "what are your ten favorite albums" and then someone posts ten album covers, well, I'm probably never gonna look at that thread again, unfortunately.

What would be funny would be if DJ Martian came back and started doing this.

I like them. It makes me happy to see album covers, but then I'm a big fan of album art. I hear you on (a), but how are (b) and (c) criticisms of this practice. In other words, why is (b) necessarily so? Who cares about (c)? How does that apply to ILM?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 19 April 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The assumption with (b) is that a white page with lots of text can sort of look like you're doing work, or at least reading something that could have some bearing on work. Whereas big noticeable pictures of album covers is a bit more obvious. I'm just looking out for the slackers here. The (c) bit is admittedly just a hidden agenda of mine, since it's annoyed me elsewhere.

I like seeing covers to, and I think it has a purpose when it comes to record-shopping: you have this visual imprint of often-recommended stuff, so if you're just flipping through it's way easier to find or notice it. So I'm not saying this is a bad idea at all, just noting that, you know, personally I'd prefer not to see it become the norm. Like I said, no one's stopping anyone and I don't imagine anyone ever will!

I.e., I'm just, you know, bitching. Feel completely free to ignore me on this one.

I think it's the "picture>100 words" thing - you could just write out the title for those people-tend-to-just-write-a-title threads, or you could LOOK at a picture. It seems to have a little more impact.

But I agree with you, esp. on point b. It has turned me into somewhat of a paranoid freak. And at home on my 24 kbs at best connection it is no no fun. I haven't noticed a lot of the attitude found in point c.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Saturday, 19 April 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it's worth bringing up if you feel it's gotten out of hand. I was just asking for a little more elaboration. I mean, (a) seems like a real salient point in terms of making the place enjoyable for everyone. I think with (b) it's sort of impossible to have a browser window open and not encounter images at some point (you know, unless you have ILx as your home page, you never visit any other site, and only view ILx threads that don't contain images).

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 19 April 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

nabisco, I think there's a feature in ILX that allows you to not display images, correct?

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 20 April 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe there should be some kind of ALT param for image tags that will display something else in case a user decides to hide images?

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 20 April 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

it changes them to links, yes?

ron (ron), Sunday, 20 April 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I only remembered that just now. I guess I'll just do that, and be content to not know what people are talking about slightly more of the time than is already the case. Sorry.

nabisco (nabisco), Sunday, 20 April 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Deal with it. Visuals add the fun.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 20 April 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

A good suggestion. Although I just posted a Louvin Bothers cover because I was taking about the cover, specifically, I know I often post them for no good reason and I'll avoid that in the future.

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 20 April 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I, for one, will NEVER stop doing it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 20 April 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

well, you know, I'm all for pictures, as long as they're of more than one band.

That's just taking things way too far.

I'm with Nabisco on the work thing. When colour pics start loading up my left eyr automatically starts peering over my left shoulder and I look as suspicious and guilty as fuck. The great thing about ILM is how inconspicuous it looks.

How do you post a picture?

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 24 April 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

You had it right in your post above, except you need to remove the spaces between "<" and "img", and ">" and the end of yr link.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 24 April 2003 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

hehe, yeah sorry, my post above was a joke. ;-)
