Does anyone know anything about Brazilian dance music?

A friend of mine was telling me about a night in London where the Brazilian DJ was playing music which was a mixture of techno, house and Samba. This sounds fantastic, but unfortunately all the Brazilian people I know (there are many I don't know of course) have really woeful taste in music. Does anyone know the names of any artists who might be producing this kind of stuff?

There's a big drum & bass scene in Brazil, and I guess that could just about be what was being played. Search DJ Marky's Movement: The Brazilian Job mix. There's a Patife one due out soon too. I don't know anything about other modern dance music from there.

Suba
Zuco 103

the Future World Funk crew out of London had a Brazilian night (Batamcumba) in addition to the FWF nights. Their FWF compilatiosn also have some example ofthi stuff.

Suba's stuff is more laid back, not particularly dance oriented. Zuco is pretty good, might be the closest to what you are looking for from an artist perspective, oterwise as Martin said check out Patife.

Lately I'm listening a lot to DJ Dolores, which is less house opriented but mixes folk from Recife with loops etc. sort of the Dj offshoot of mangue.

Check out Union Square Music website www.unionsqaure.co.uk & their Ocho imprint for FWF stuuf and other compilations that might serve as a guide.

my suspicion is that funk is really hard to find outside rio. i was in são paulo and went asking around for funk, and all i could turn up was 1 CD compilation. it was pretty fun shit, a mixture of booty/bass with mashup elements (pink panther theme, etc) and vocals... as i understand it, the stuff is really only recorded onto CD, and played out on CD, CD-R and MP3... no vinyl to speak of. but i'd be thrilled to be proven wrong.

It's very hard to find. Luckily, a friend of mine went top Brazil a couple of years ago and came back with some of the stuff. I recorded a CD's worth of songs from what he brought back: Bondo Do Tigrão, É O Tchan, Furacão 2000. I ounce found an mp3 of DJ Marlboro that was great. Mad electronic ghetto music.
