siren-horns in the crowd at DJ events: classic or dud

I used to think dud but on Friday I went to see Danny Tenaglia (it was "silly hat night" at Be Yourself; $250 prize went to someone who'd made a hat that served as the base for a real functioning mobile with miniature records dangling off it; coolest one though was the mirror-ball bowler, a bowler hat encrusted with disco-ball mirrors; Danny put it on around 6am and the light guy turned off all the lights and shone one bright pink spot right on Danny's head—fwammmmm the place lit up, hundreds of pink dots) and I thought it was all good for some reason

it can be good yeah, it's better though if it's a tune which has a siren in it. sirens and fake smoke go together well.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 20 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

best at jungle events

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 20 April 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

what are the best moments to let them loose?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 20 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(if i have to wait for a jungle event with fake smoke I'm going to be waiting a looooong time, at least in NYC)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 20 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yea, this is very true:/ air horns, so nineties!

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 20 April 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never been to an event with air horns, I guess the midwest passed through that fad unscathed. The rave gimmick that we had for awhile in 98 was the lazer pointers, after that it was glow sticks. ack!

what were some other tasty/tacky rave gimmicks.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

live percussion: some annoying guys with bongos

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Bang the Party has congas (some people say "cunga", what is that?). I like them. It's like a common element to all the songs. I guess those air horns are too but a judicious air-horner will save it up for the right moment. At Frank's they'd just GO for like an hour and you'd totally even forget that they were there, until they stopped, and suddenly the room would get a bit colder and emptier.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(which just made it evenbetter when they came back in! like rolling UP the windows and turning OFF the air conditioning on the way to the pool)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 20 April 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yea, this is very true:/ air horns, so nineties!

the island of jamaica might disagree with you

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 20 April 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

what are the best moments to let them loose?

when the mc politely asks the horns massive to blow them

Sub-thread: Horns Crew vs Whistle Crew?

ss, Sunday, 20 April 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to be really into Warning and Dreamcast tape packs, and listening to those tapes stoned the massed horns sound really ominous, like the rave is taking place on the edge of Armagideon or something

ss, Sunday, 20 April 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

very good point well made jess! i've never used one but can say that a few bashy dances i've been to have been greatly enhanced by the crowd's judicious use of air horns, whistles and all manner of other noise-making paraphernalia. other ill-advised rave accoutrements included guns for a little while in Manchester, UK... not clubbing's finest hour... i also really liked the football trend for taking inflatable items to matches — bananas etc. the zenith of this was when a bunch of Norwich fans took in several blow-up sex dolls and waved them throughout the game at assembled TV cameras... totally off-topic but made me laugh...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Sunday, 20 April 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

er...inflatable bananas at football.....this is a good thing?>????

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 20 April 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Air horns are of course a dud, except when they appear as part of the faux crowd noise on Scooter, Toxic Two and KLF records, where they suddenly become classics. I think this may well be a universal rule, rather than specific to those artists.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 20 April 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

dud

robin (robin), Sunday, 20 April 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

at techno events anyways
it always seems to be scumbags who love their trance, and are only at techno cause they heard umek mix once and thought that was what it would be like

robin (robin), Sunday, 20 April 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

WHISTLE POSSE

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 20 April 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

robin i take it you'll be swinging your shirt above your head at mauro piccotto (techno dj!) in the red box. haha.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

jesus yeah, the scaldification of techno continues...

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

threads like this make me realise i'm more of a techno snob than i like to admit...

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

it's lunacy. I don't think I'd go to see piccotto if he was playing the daft punk live cd. I had the funny experience on thursday of seeing andrew weatherall play to 20 people.

I like the sirens, but like I say within the tunes, and there is a standard of quality.

good siren-x-press 2-muzik x press

fucking godawful johnny moy siren-cylone-lord of the land.

the bad ones are like those little blower things you get at childrens parties

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

where did you see weatherall?

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in some club in Camden in London, over for the weekend with my brother, it was a great night overall, cos lots of mates from London and that. But the Rooty DJs, frank tope and tayo, had everyone dancing downstairs and weatheralls room was so quiet. Ewan Pearson whom I like and rate, had even less people, maybe 10 or so!

it's a totally different scene in London, I was pretty surprised I must say.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i went to vinyl once to see DT, but he called in sick. his replacement played the same crappy tribal tech house all night, and he was mostly chatting to his friends anyways, and, every so often, he would remember, "oh i have this horn thingy in the booth" and he would let it blare arbitrarily... that night sucked... ten hours in the club, and i ran out of cigarettes at like 2am.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 21 April 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I have heard awful stories about tenaglia, all of them to do with his dj sets aswell

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

and was weatherall good?
he's the first name dj i went to see,but have missed him play every time since...
he was really good then from what i remember...

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

he was better in tivoli, as you can imagine he was impossible to get into with so few people dancing. also i'd gotten a free beer armband and was in some state, the rooty guys were great as far as what I'm into goes, they played 3 of my favourite tunes ever almost in a row.

it was tough to even listen to weatherall, the club was shit and filthy, but the other room had such a good crowd it made it great, whereas weatherall's room was just desolate.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

shit buzz, that sounds like a terrible atmosphere to see a dj in
good job there was someone you wanted to see in the other room...

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah it was. I felt sorry for him really. He was amazing in Dublin last time. you're not going along to dj hell next week are you?

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

what?
where?
i didn't even hear about it
i would love to,but i have exams,so probably not

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

tivoli. give it a shot if you can. my exams are a bit later thankfully.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i might do,what date is it on?
usually everything on in the tivoli is all over ie-dance,i wonder why i didn't hear about this...is he headlining?

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, next saturday, 24th or 25th or whatever date it is. Apparently there's been bad shit with the licence recently so it might end early but that just means be sure and get there early I guess. I have to say I am dying to see what style he'll do.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i keep hearing rumours that its shutting down soon...
i still haven't been yet...
did you hear fintan won some djing competition and is going to playing in the tivoli soon?

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah heard that, though fuck knows when he'll be playing. it won't be shutting down I doubt, I asked Phil and he's not sure, he was in London with us this weekend, he must be pissed off though to come back after 2 weeks off and find that shit going on. It's just making a scapegoat of it with all this "terror in Dublin shit", don't you think?

I don't believe it'll close, but I suspect everywhere is going to be shutting at 2.30 or 3 soon, what a pisser, have to sort our parties. It's a bit depressing, it was getting great when tivoli went on till 5 and shit.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

whats the "terror in dublin shit"?
i still haven't been to the tivoli, oddly enough
i have noticed switch and the music centre don't seem to be staying open as late
ah well,it'll encourage more free parties...

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean like the stuff about people being beaten up on the streets which is all over the news. I'm still not convinced figures for street violence have increased gigantically. In these cases the problem "goes away" when the press stop reporting it, regardless of whethere figures go up or down. There's talk in the press of McDowell promoting a (direct quote) "draconican approach", and I don't trust the Irish Gardai with that mandate one fucking bit. I'm not one of these guys who thinks all police are scum but I just don't trust that the message is communicated sensibly, I reckon this club backlash is basically just making a scapegoat of clubbing as per usual, I mean the clubbers out late are surely the least dangerous.

It's a pain in the face trying to suggest that letting places open as long as they want is the only way to break the "lets meet at 8, drink till we get kicked out at 12.30, go to the chipper at 1, go home" cycle which almost everyone in Dublin has. Tough times for clubbing ahead I reckon, as much as it pisses me off to say it.

Yeah free parties might be the way forward.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i am one of those people who think that (almost) all police are scum, but i still do want something to be done about the situation..

i think that pubs should be allowed stay open as late as they want,so that people aren't all drinking as much as they can then ending up drunk on the streets at the same time, looking for the same taxis, etc, which is only going to cause more fights...

but that's not an arguement that is going to work any time soon, the current thinking is that pubs should close earlier, which is just stupid...

however,in the meantime,i would like to see more police on the streets at night actually stopping fights...
i mean, the main priority of the police force should be stopping the citizens from getting attacked, anything else,(drugs, pickpockets, underage drinkers, clubs staying open late, whatever)should be secondary
unfortunately, the police that are out at night in ireland seem more concerned with whistling at girls, harrassing people on drugs, and avoiding fights than anything else

i mean i've been on my way to play football at one in the morning and had police step over people fighting on the ground in order to search us,when we're clearly sober and there are people vomiting on/punching each other everywhere

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean i do think the whole thing is a big issue, and i find dublin quite threatening at night,so i don't think its blown out of proportion,i just think they're going about the whole thing the wrong way

and making clubs the scapegoats is good for publicity,so it probably will continue, stupid as it is...

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes it's the "we're getting tough" nonsense.

In alot of ways it's something which shows the problems of democracy and the Irish system of it, each government has to be seen to do something so the sensible way to deal with it, ie a long term plan to actually re-educate people and break the culture, will never happen because the people want that elusive scarlet pimpernell they call "action" or "resolutions" and the government want to be seen to give it to them.

As you say the real way to do things is let pubs open whenever they want, that way you smash up the routine side of weekend drinking, it is just far more sensible. I don't agree either with the people who say that would make Ireland go mad and we'd all be out on the piss 24/7, people still have to work, and most won't want to be out all night anyway.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i've just noticed on the bottom of the flyer for DT it says "no: glo-sticks, cell-phones, text messagers, other nonsense on the dancefloor" but i guess air horns are ok!! cause i've heard them every single time i've gone to see him! btw i don't know what stories you've heard but he's always been grate when i've seen him (even when he fucks up!), you're always guaranteed loads of new acetates and dubs. last friday he backspun the record and the beats were actually in time, i know it's a stupid trick but maybe i'm impressed easily. he's sort of old-fashioned i guess, he likes to take the mic and work the crowd a little, loves to drop everything out and then bring it right back, i love that shit

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

did he play the p diddy record?

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

if he did it was a dub, i wouldn't recognize it without p diddy's signature weak-ass vocals, i was listening for it though! he did play a very nice remix of "somebody's watchin me"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)
