Tryin' to make a mix cd of this stuff but my knowledge is limited. The slinkier and jazzier, the better. So far I have:

A Tribe Called Quest - Electric Relaxation
Biggie Smalls - Party and Bullshit
Warren G - Regulate
Nas - The World Is Yours
Black Sheep - The Choice Is Yours
Redman - Rated R
kool g rap - first nigga (primo remix) [not all that smoove, tho]
De La Soul - A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays

Destroy: Bone Thugz! Digable Planets!

Any recommendations? Maybe some of the better dj premier productions?

Basehead - 2000 BC.

black, Monday, 21 April 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

obscure, and maybe it doesn't fit, but 'sparkle' by Camp Lo. Especially the 'Black Nostaljack' mix.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

stevie -

think you're thinking about the mr. midnight mix of "sparkle" - "black nostaljack" was the single off the Camp Lo album.

second you on it being a great tune - fat organ chords, slithery rapping, no beats.

cooper (cooper), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: The Roots' Organix...you might have to search kinda hard though, I think it was only released in Europe, and is currently out-of-print. VERY good stuff..."Grits", "Real Music" = some of the best Roots jams EVAH. Plus, you get to hear ?uestlove's suprisingly fluid and funny verses on this one.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Camp Lo 'Sparkle' is great - but i only found it thanks to the Avalanches sampling it on their album

stevem (blueski), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

A little off-topic but, has anybody else heard that Sonny Cheba all-instrumental album? I forget the title, but DANG it's really good, I was totally blown away by that.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(Sonny Cheba from Camp Lo that is)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"They Reminisce Over You" -- Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth

chrish, Monday, 21 April 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You should check out 'Black Bastards'--a good summertime album.
Also, has everyone and their mother forgot about muthafuckin' Pharcyde. I know my mom hasn't.

oops (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely search out Diamond D's 'Stunts, Blunts, and HipHop'. Almost any track on it should suffice.

oops (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

make space on that cd for Pharcyde's 'Passin' Me By' then

stevem (blueski), Monday, 21 April 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i second passing me by and can it all be so simple, both great tracks...

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Passing Me By" is another notable exception on my part. I should've remembered it since we actually listened to it in my Intro to Electronic Music class a semester or two ago. Soooo makes the cut. And thanks to everyone who suggested anything! Gonna be the best mix EVAR.

original bgm, Monday, 21 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

thing is we've stumbled into mid 90s territory with a few of these tracks - what years did 'Passin Me By' and 'Sparkle' come out exactly?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally second "The Choice is Yours." Also search: Father MC, "I'll Do 4 U." (There must be a good dozen or so I'm forgetting, since this was when I listened to hip-hop most exclusively.) At the very least, though, don't destroy Digable Planets!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit, how could I forget -- Candyman, "Knockin' Boots."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure but "Regulate" pretty much made me fall into this trap from the get-go. But whatevah, its all just a broad sound I'm going for anyway.

original bgm, Monday, 21 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

'Bizzare Ride'=1992

buttch (Oops), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)
