Album June 9th - Music in a Foreign Language

Music in a Foreign Language / My Other Life / Late Night, Early Town /
Cutting Out / No More Love Songs / Today I¹m not So Sure / My Alibi /
People Ain¹t No Good / Brazil / Shelf Life

"No More Love Songs was originally on the Negatives album but it became the preferred song to open my solo set. The album is an attempt to get the vibe of the folk shows on record without making a guitar and voice record. I play guitar and piano, acoustic and electric, bass, and program drum machines and string synths.. there are a few guest musicians, some familiar, some new. There is no drum kit, so I guess it is not a rock record.. but I don't really know what people are going to call it..

The single B-side song - Clairefontaine - was the only song left off the record after the final mixes, there are 2 versions, quite different from each other, the long version is a rough mix of mine made before I rearranged it. This song amuses me in that it was the only song written to order for the record.. I thought the other 10 were too dense and maybe a little dark and needed something light to split them up.. I spent a very, very long time on the song only to find that, ultimately, the other 10 were not so dark and it was not needed.. I think it is quite beautiful, but it does not sit right with the others..welcome to my life in the studio..

The second single b-sides will be early versions of a couple of the album tracks before they were re-arranged - eg. My Alibi was written and originally recorded on piano.. there is no piano on the finished version.

pinefox will be happy, i spotted this album title on the weekend at longplayer records whilst updating my forthcoming album releases info for my website.

Rehashing 'No More Love Songs': incredible. Perhaps he read the Geezer, Miller's praise for it and decided that reusing the song was the only way to win that Geezer's respect once again.

'Late Night Early Town' is a nice enough piece, but ill-advisedly uses the word 'postmodern'.

one month passes...
Furthermore, I'd like to recommend the single "No More Love Songs" with a 1) stunning b-side Claire Fontaine 2) stunning sleeve (designed by him with lyrics) and 3) stunning a-side...

one year passes...
What was this album like? I remember contemplating a purchase, but there were just other things I wanted more.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

I/Me, I loved it. Like any gread Lloyd Cole record, it took awhile for it to really grow on me.

I haven't made it through a whole Lloyd solo album, but this may be because I haven't really stuck with them. The Commotions were poppier and easier to get to know.

Is this better than, say, "Bad Vibes"?

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

Some might say.. But some hate Bad Vibes. Baby I'm a want Bad Vibes.

This one is quieter/acoutic-ier and not poppy like a Commotions record.

Would someone who's only heard Rattlesnakes like it?

Baaderonixx and the hedonistic gluttons (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Not that you wouldn't like it, but it's not the same at all. Maybe sort of like 2CV, but really a different sound.

that link to the Lloyd Cole live set above now redirects to "luckybachelors.com" or something like that. Who would expect to see boobs in place of Lloyd?
