Songs that leave you physically drained

I keep listening to "When I Was Young" (Julie Driscoll/Trinity) and Its so overwhelming I feel like I am recovering from a severe beating. I can never play another song after it because I have to...well...rest afterwards. What songs leave you drained?

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"poptones"

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

slint - good morning captain
massive attack - angel
butthole surfers - 22 going on 23
mercury rev - very sleepy rivers

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

According to rumor, "Good Morning, Captain" left Brian McMahon physically drained during the making of it, as well.

Personally, the only thing I can think of is the entirety of Metal Machine Music, the only thing I own which seems longer when listening to it than it actually is.

speedy j-pannik
gorecki-third syphony,part one
dirty three-first song off whatever you love, you are

i started a similarly themed thread today, about albums that are so engrossing you rarely listen to them, great and all as they are,and there were similarly few responses...
come on people!sort it out!

robin (robin), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Poptones is exhausting! i haven't dared a listen in over a decade for fear of a permanent mood alteration

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I can sure feel it my shoulders, forearms and knees after "Purple Rain's" 8:45 of posturing and air guitar aerobics. And I even though I just pantomime the singing and screeching, my voice is shot afterwords nonetheless.

avery_schreib, Monday, 21 April 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The last song on "In an Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel. The sound of the guitar thudding against the ground is... It's intense. Though it may also have something to do with the cumulative effect of the album.

Ess, Monday, 21 April 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Black's Atomizer used to do this to me, but I listened to it not so long ago and found it...corny. It's strange to have once been terrified by "Kerosene;" now I just think, "That guy's trying way too hard to be scary."

Gang of Four's "Ether" still exhausts me, though. And both NMH albums.

i can't believe nobody brought up "frankie teardrop" by suicide yet. well, i just did, so that's that.

Andrew Calaman (Andrew Calaman), Monday, 21 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the live version of 'dazed and confused' on the song remains the same

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Chemical Brothers 'The Private Psychedelic Reel'

its too fucking long for the repetition and the three times i've seen them live i've been standing there getting kinda bored by the 7th minute

stevem (blueski), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Not so much bored but more wasted from sheer emotional overload was what I was aiming for.

You Light Up My Life

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry Ryan's "Eloise", every time, but that never actually affects my behaviour. the other weekend "We Can't Lose" by Shells & Styles P reduced me to a gibbering wreck incapable of saying anything other than "I saw them ... blood running down their faces ... I SAW THEM". and I'm not proud of that. there was a reason for it, though.

Cecil Taylor: Silent Tongues. My cat also sits mesmerized along with me. I don't really like jazz too much, but this floors me.

"How Many More Times?" by Zeppelin, "Anthrax" by Gang of Four, "Kennedy" by the Wedding Present, "Whole Lotta Rosie" by AC/DC.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Three Days" by Jane's Addiction.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Based admittedly on last night's Breeders show, I was reminded how readily both "Cannonball" and "Gigantic" can do just that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Gigantic can make me teary

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Not so much bored but more wasted from sheer emotional overload was what I was aiming for

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Soooo many Fishbone songs..."Housework", "Bonin In the Boneyard", "Ma and Pa", "Sunless Saturday", "Everyday Sunshine", "In the Heat of Anger", "Karma Tsunami", "Kingpin", "Party at Ground Zero", the Meter Maid jams, "Black Flowers", "Alcoholic", "In the Cube", "Down Boy", "Drunk Schizo", and ESPECIALLY "Pressure", to name just a few.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, in the non-Fishbone division:

Radiohead's "Electioneering"
Ween's "Pumpin 4 the Man" (followed by serene-as-fuck "Sarah" = PERFECT)
System of a Down's "Psycho", "Needles", "Sugar", "P.L.U.C.K."
Bjork's "I Miss You"
Gift of Gab/Cut Chemist "Alphabet Aerobics", "Chemical Calisthenics"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beatles "A Day In the Life" (I love how my muscles relax when its over)
Mr. Bungle's "Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz", "Ars Moriendi"
Beck's "Motherfucker", "Diamond Bullocks" (Mutations hidden track)
Ol' Dirty Bastard's "I Can't Wait"
The Roots/Jill Scott's "You Got Me" (live version)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

15-60-75: Jimmy Bell
The Fall: Tempo House

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to go off-topic but nickalicious, you reminded me that I used to own a Fishbone album - it's the "Monkey With A Brain..." one or whatever. I think I quite liked it once. And to link fabulously to the topic, that song that goes "my mom is a (x), my dad is a (x), etc." over and over again is pretty exhausting.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Almost anything out of "soundtracks for the blind" by Swans.

rexJr., Wednesday, 23 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordic, that's "Drunk Schizo", that's one of the ones I mentioned. That was always one of my favorite of their albums; although it's also one of the most all-over-the-place, and cuz of that, one of the hardest to really dig yr teeth into.

Some other physically draining Fishbone songs: "The Warmth of Your Breath", "Monkey Dick", "It's a Wonderful World (We Gonna Have a Good Life)", "Lyin' Ass Bitch", and "Ugly".

But, of all their songs, "Pressure" from Reality of My Surroundings is the one that seriously throws ya down, and is a great representation of one of my favorite of their hybridizations: that of punk rock and gospel. I listened to it ripped drunk the other night and just fell down when it was over.
