Your best mixtape/CD-R segue ever

I have a couple I can think of off the top of my head that I'm really proud of, namely: Josh Wink, "Higher State of Consciousness (Tweekin' Acid Funk Mix)" --> Funkadelic, "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" (the "pah!" of Wink's final snare crack jumping straight into the down-beaten tom-tom of Funkadelic, plus the juxtaposition of styles is cool; they both rock at a similar tempo but are totally different sounding). Recently, OutKast, "Ms. Jackson" --> Elvis Presley, "Suspicious Minds" made me especially happy, for thematic reasons. Yours?

It wasn't a mix tape, but a DJ set that I begged Paul to do: The Fall - There's A Ghost In My House to the Scooby Doo Theme. Sadly, very few people got it.

I've done too many to pick & choose from.

Kodanshi, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

(Warning: I'm an oldies fan. These songs may or may not be familiar.)

On one tape I segued from Bloodrock's "D.O.A." to the Cyrkle's "Turn- Down Day." The utter incongruity (the morbid to the chirpy without a beat) delighted me.

On another tape I segued from the Four Seasons' "C'Mon Marianne" to R. Dean Taylor's "Indiana Wants Me" -- and noticed, unintentionally, that Frankie Valli's falsetto whoops at the end sound *exactly* like the sirens that begin "Indiana Wants Me."

Joseph McCombs, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The one I'm most inordinately proud of: From the Kinks' "David Watts" (main lyric = "Fa fa fa-fa fa/fa fa fa") to Otis Redding's "Fa Fa Fa."

Frank Kogan, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Just remembered another one, brought on by Kogan: wasn't a mixtape, but was at a friend's house recently alternating control of the stereo. He played me a live version of "Tighten Up" by James Brown, off the Soul Pride comp; good version, about eight minutes long, and there's a really cool Tijuana Brass thing going on with the horn section, including a one-high-note-over-and-over solo that lasts about 20 seconds. I countered with Love's "Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale," from Forever Changes, which also has the same kind of horn section, and--unremembered by me till we heard it--the same single-note riffing. A free lunch, as Frank likes to call this sort of thing.

I did an interview with a girl I was keen on as part of a sound recording project (we were chating along quite normally when I decided to ask her out. She wasn't expecting it. She said yes. And I had it all on DAT as proof) -- and when I made her the inevitable mix tape I put the whole interview in, snipped up as segues.

not song segues, but good intro/outro jump-cut action - "Hi this is Brooke Shields & I'm listening to"/HAK-HAK-HAK-HAK-HAK (coughing from "Sweet Leaf", Brooke S. from the "Rodney on the ROQ" album) ; (opening 2 seconds of "Stairway to Heaven")/(gunshots); ("KISS Alive")"There must be some people here who like to drink TEQUILA!"/(squealing pigs).

duane, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Och, that's nothing. We used to make "hell tapes" with the design of freaking each other out (The Church to Guns N Roses in one chord change, scary how well it worked) But my best victim was a penpan who used to send me tape letters. Often she would get quite intoxicated by the end of them. So I'd mix her most intoxicated moments "I found PICKLES!!! (pickles pickles pickles...)" with appropriate music for them "I don't wanna pickle, just wanna ride on my motorcycle" and send them back to her.

She loved me, really she did.

on my only proper mixtape (ie - done with decks and stuff), the bunker sessions, i did tipsy's liquordelic into jean-jacques perrey's cat in the night (one samples other) and worked pretty well. also attempted john barry and adam x which didn't work, although adam x into pnu riff did. also learnt lesson: don't try mel&kim into jeff mills. it won't work

Mark: Am I still the winner?

JM, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Jimmy: Yes. I love that story. That's taking the mixtape-as-romantic- artifact to its logical conclusion. Very clever.

A couple of years ago I bought a mixer at Radioshack, and now could never imagine making a mix without it. You have to do those fuckers in real time, warts and all.

I used to like making ambient/noise mixes where the idea was to blend similar sounds from very different sources. One that sounded great was going from Christian Marclay's "Smoker," which ends with a mass of cricket chirps, then into a chorus of frogs on the "Sounds of North American Frogs" record, and finally into Oval's Microstoria mix "Runtime Engine." Exposed the organic roots of glitch past & present, I think.

Värttinä's "Katariina" into Bloody Fist's "Cock Sucker." The ultra-fast patter of the first ends with a quick squeak, and runs bang into "COCK SUCKER COCK SUCKER COCK SUCKER COCK SUCKER COCK SUCKER COCK SUCKER fucked my sister COCK SUCKER" etc.

You sort of have to hear it to believe it. Same beat.

It's a bit obvious, but my favourite of my own CD-R segues is from the Superpitcher remix of Carsten Jost's "You Don't Need A Weatherman" into Markus Nikolai's "Passion" - the bird sounds at the end of the first and beginning of the second blend together wonderfully.

Prince "Raspberry Beret" into Richard Thompson's "Dark Hand Over My Heart." Both records have an eerily similar drum part. Full disclosure -- it wasn't my idea; I heard a DJ on "World Cafe" make the transition first.

High On Fire's Hung, Drawn and Quartered into Chicago's If You Leave Me Now

nineteen years pass...

I made a playlist from Rolling Stone's 74 best albums of 1974, choosing a favourite song from each record in descending order without considering beforehand what the songs would sound like side-by-side. There were at least four transitions that amused or surprised me, whether by comparison or contrast:

Van Morrison "I Believe to My Soul" >> Aerosmith, "Seasons of Wither"
Blue Öyster Cult "Subhuman" >> Funkadelic, "I'll Stay"
Millie Jackson, "The Rap" >> Leonard Cohen, "Is This What You Wanted"
Eno, "Put a Straw Under Baby" >> Betty Davis, "He Was a Big Freak"

I also hadn't noticed that I put "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Louisiana 1927" together.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 29 December 2024 21:37 (five days ago) link

Sort of the opposite of a segue, but I did once start a power-pop mixtape with XTC's "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" (which starts with the sound of Andy walking into the studio, plugging in his guitar, and starting to play) and ended it with Splitsville's "Sunshiny Daydream" (which ends with the sound of someone walking out of the studio, whistling).

1994 mixtape: there's a pause in Sabotage by The Beastie Boys at about 1'38" (link), and I added a bit of movie dialogue from The Story of Star Wars record - the scene where Luke is looking through a scope at 2 banthas, then the music swells dramatically as the sandpeople shriek and surprise attack him (link). The sound of the sandpeople shrieking and hooting then fades back into the guitar kicking in as Sabotage continues. I can still hear it in my head. Gives me chills. Proudest mixtape moment.

christopher.ivan, Monday, 30 December 2024 13:25 (four days ago) link

Since the tape is packed away in a box somewhere, I decided that a good use of my time was to recreate Sandpeople Sabotage. (just the bit described - not the entire song)
