And whee have they been for the past few years?

I'm going to sleep now, and in the morning I want 80 new answers.

i was not a particularly huge fan of their initial releases, but i can say that i saw them play in sept. '00 and thought they were beautiful. some really sublime moments.

i love their first album and like the following two (but not as much). I don't think they still have a record deal though

CLASSIC

i just got Monomania from a used bin at reckless last night, and i'm loving it.

if you like "johnny angel" i think you should seek out a copy of this pronto.

the first album, the blue one, has the uber-classic "runaway" and a couple of other pretty great ones ("underground sound," "there was a time"). it's really lo-fi. after that they were very hit-and-miss and the fidelity got better, though not necessarily for the better.

i saw them once live and they were surprisingly good for a band that displayed no physical energy whatsoever.

pretty good i'd say, but nothing terribly special

i think the really obvious samples are pretty cute

was playing the blue album to my g/f the other day, forgotten how much i liked it.

That first record at least was fun.

How did they get away with all those obvious samples anyway?

*trys usual devious means to check out subsequent releases*

The Yellow album is really worth getting. It's not as slick as their other albums [insert long digression about whether it's unfinished demos or not] but there's something very appealing about its thrown-togetherness.

I can't remember which album it got appended to, but their one long song (Down In The Traffic? Down In The City? In The Traffic? Something like that) is wonderful.

it's called down in the traffic

this was the first cdr i ever made!!!

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 27 September 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the yellow album was released by simon dine who went on to release records as noonday underground and he apparently released the yellow album without the band's permission with him claiming he was adventures in stereo and that jim b was ripping him off. probably why on the next ais record 'all songs written by jim beattie' was stamped on it like 13 times. the first blue cd is the best but monomania is also very good. they shoudl do more of the a capella stuff like 'god save us' where he just continually layers her voice. they are much better than primal scream at least. i hear the song from where the sample from 'underground sound' was drawn in chipotle all the time.

twelve years pass...

this may be a long shot, but can someone identify the guitar sample in 'Pretty Things'? it sounds very familiar and it's been bugging me for years.

(I will feel very silly if it turns out to be a song by the '60s band The Pretty Things)

wow, thanks, girl from Spirea X! that wasn't at all what I was expecting and I almost certainly haven't heard it before. I'd assumed most of their samples were drawn from '60/'70s bubblegum and soul records, but maybe I'm not giving Simon Dine enough credit for his crate digging skills

it's a great song! and as far as I can tell, is of a similar vintage (mid-60s) if not locale:
