they definitely had some rabidly homophobic songs that were pretty offensive, if not truly mean-spirited...they did that harsh song about the beatles...but i remember thinking some of their shtick was really funny. admittedly, i was about 15 at the time.
and heck, tesco vee couldn't have been such a bad guy-- wasn't he a school teacher, a vintage toy collector, a pal of ian mackaye? and didn't he play a big role in the touch and go label?

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh fuck, complete and utter CLASSIC! And not just because of their seminal (I mean that both in terms of its significance and also because of Tesvo Vee's potty-minded sensibility) debut album (We're the Meatmen....and You Suck) but also because of the brilliant War of the Superbikes. They turned to crap after that, of course, but those first two albums are GENIUS!

Did you ever see Tesco's travelogue show, "Way USA?" Funniest shit on television, ever.

hstencil, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I sorrily missed that. I hear he manages a grocery store now.

!

(Alex, I only have part of the first episode on tape, sadly.)

I gotta say, DUD!....I liked We're the Meatmen and You Suck! in 8th grade (15 years ago, ouch!)...so when i heard it last year, I was shocked at how bad it was...really just lame!

ddb, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

funny when i was 15 (yea yea, we're the meatmen and you suck and we're the meatmen and you still suck! is a classic one-two-punch re consecutive album titles. but the music is so lame.

and making fun of Morrissey 10 years past his shelf date (see "Morrissey Must Die!") is not only lame, it's also bizarre. the Warlock Pinchers beat 'em to that punch, anyway (back when Morrissey was still relevant!)

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Meatmen rock!

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

On the whole, very close to classic. A handful of songs, uber-classic!

1 Down 3 to Go = their best moment.

libcrypt, Thursday, 28 February 2008 06:38 (seventeen years ago)

Hard to believe I was so vociferous in my defense of War of the Superbikes, as it's truly a very silly record.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 28 February 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

Tesco is a lot funnier on the printed page than on record.

So there's a Meatmen historical overview DVD out. I know this as a copy arrived in the mail today.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 September 2008 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, there's a good Mark Prindle review on his site.

sleeve, Thursday, 11 September 2008 00:56 (seventeen years ago)

I made it through the first ten minutes before going "ARRRGH" and making dinner. I can't imagine anyone sane sitting through all three hours without stopping.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 September 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha a THREE HOUR Meatmen documentary? AWESOME.

And hey, Blight were great too, eh?

BigLurks, Thursday, 11 September 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

Noise band. Average for the time.

Stence was right about this, BTW -- the first episode, focusing on Baltimore, is tucked away deep in the DVD, and it's frickin' great.

I wonder who's in the group with Tesco now? They're doing a DC date, April 22 I think at DC 9, a small club...

six years pass...

It being the anniversary of the murder of John Lennon, I could not help but be reminded of the Meatmen track off that first LP, "One Down, Three to Go."

When was the last time you folks listened to that?

Maybe this is just me getting old, but hearing Yoko Ono referred to as "slopehead" and a "panfaced gook" really took the wind out of my sails. No, it's not okay in 2017, but it shouldn't have been okay in 1983.

I suppose the argument could be made that, like the License to Ill-era Beastie Boys and, for that matter, Andrew Dice Clay, the Meatmen were "in character" the whole time. I can’t speak to that. While I had my suspicions in that capacity about FEAR, I haven’t seen or heard anything about the Meatmen, over the years, to suggest that they are or were anything other than tasteless assholes. Regardless, you know what’s absolutely never alright? Ethnic slur. They’re not funny, they’re not ironic, they’re not cool and they’re sure as shit not Punk. They’re indefensible and they’re just fuckin’ racist.

Rant over. I apologize for espousing this stuff.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 8 December 2017 21:59 (eight years ago)

yeah i was totally put off by the Meatmen from the get-go
