How can one man have so much talent?

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree. I've just borrowed Touched from a mate of mine and it's a classic. The Posies are great too.

I'd had the Saltine single and his demo-y first solo album, This Sounds Like Goodbye for a while before finally picking up Touched recently, and I was a little disappointed with it at first...just sounded like the edges were rounded off a little too much. but i'm coming around, "Uniforms" and "Lover's Hymn" are great. but I do prefer the (almost identical but slightly more energetic) Saltine versions of "Reveal Love" and "Find Yourself Alone", and the TSLG version of "Here's To The Future".

he definitely started to really his his stride towards the end of the Posies, nearly all the best songs on Success are his. some of his solo demos on the At Least At Last box set are great, too, esp. "Pay You Back In Time", which he wrote for Chrissie Hynde. I'd love to hear her (or a full-band Posies) do a version of that.

Reveal Love has recently become one of my favourite all time songs, blows me away everytime. Personally, i prefer the solo version to the Saltine version.

of course, classic. 'Touched' the best unheard record of last year? I just wish Auer would lay off the bad stuff and come out with a new release

kinski (kinski), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Auer's solo full-length has been in the offing for a while now. hopefully this will be the year it finally drops. all i have is 6 1/2, how is the EP of originals that he has out?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

total total total godhead. wrote 'solar sister', 'you avoid parties', 'fall song', 'farewell typewriter', 'oh michael', 'down like me', 'reveal love'... so many classics.

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

was "Oh Michael" recorded in any form besides Ken's demo on the Posies box set? that's a good one.

Not to say anything wrong about Ken Stringfellow (he is a talented guy who doesn't deserve that), but there are guys with considerably more talent than him.

The most consistently great current songwriter remains Neil Finn.

I protest that! It has to be Elliott Smith, Ben Folds or Badly Drawn Boy, but Brendan Benson has the potential to join their ranks.

Brendan Benson looks like a Confederate junkie

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 2 April 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I am excited - I like Touched better than any Posies record.

southern lights (southern lights), Friday, 2 April 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Def. classic.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

For that matter, I really like his first solo record, the one w/ the 4-track stuff and the crude electronic instrumentals.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, This Sounds Like Goodbye is pretty enjoyable for the lo-fi document it is. I love the original version of "Here's To The Future", and "Too True" and "Your Love Won't Be Denied" are great.

Anyone heard the new one Soft Commands? I really love Touched.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Monday, 4 October 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It's far too heavy on the piano ballads. Really slow, dragging, melodically lacking piano ballads.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 4 October 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's a bit too ballad-y. well, a lot of his previous solo stuff has been heavy on ballads too, but there is something lacking on this one. there is one song I really like, though, "Any Love (Cassandra et Lune)". and "You Become The Dawn" is pretty good, too. as a whole the album is slowly growing on me. the single, "You Drew", reminds me way too much of "American Pie", though. ugh.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 4 October 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, in the midst of all the mediocrity is "Any Love (Cassandra et Lune)," which is probably one of the best songs he's ever done—with the Posies or without.
