Misheard Lyrics Which Turn Out Not to Be Misheard At All

I was listening to Moby Grape today (as is my wont), mentally singing along to "Hey Grandma" when the last verse came along. I've ALWAYS heard this as:

Robitussin make me feel so fine/ Robitussin and elderberry wine

Now I knew Robitussin to be a cough medicine which was available in Britain in my youth, but I could not conceive of why Moby Grape would be singing of its delights in San Francisco in 1967. So I always assumed that I'd just misheard it: but on visiting www.mobygrape.net today I discover that the real lyric is:

Robitussin make me feel so fine
Robitussin and Elderberry wine

Kinda weird, don't ya think?

The last song on the first Sundays lp has what sounded like the line "The Lone Ranger has sold his bad, bad dawg". I mentioned this to them when I met them one time, with a kind of "haha, can you believe how silly I was?!" disclaimer, only for them to reply "No, that's right".
:(

"what's she gonna do with a chimney on her"...

I always thought that my mishearing produced the genius of "Of course, I've had it in my ear before" in 'Lust for Life'. But that's what it is, isn't it?

Is it me or is there a voice in the background during "I Wanna Sex You Up" that keeps saying

"I told you I wanted the fish-sticks!" over and over again.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"I told you I wanted the fish-sticks!"

In the ear, sil vous plait.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't that 'What's she gonna LOOK LIKE with a chimney on her?'

That one Shakira lyric about her breasts being small and humble so you wont confuse them with mountains.

David Allen, Thursday, 24 April 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, and in the same song, the line about her legs being strong like her mother's.

I always thought I heard Queen's "One Vision" wrong where at the end he says "Gimme gimme gimme fried chicken" was looking to see what it really was the other day, sure enough, I was right...

I find myself to often have to double check the lyrics to "Too Far Gone" by Adonis; doubting that he does say "Yall start jackin' off in there"

Or is he actually saying something different? Assumedly he is talking about dancing, not masturbating, but hey, you never know.

I always thought in Punks in the Beerlight (Silver Jews), that Dave Berman sang "Punks in the Beerlight--Toulouse-Lautrec!".

And then I found out, yeah, he does.

Hendrix did in fact say 'Kiss this Guy' in live performances and meant for it to be androgynous on the album. Is that common knowledge? Still interesting.

humansuit, Thursday, 26 July 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

Irreplaceable... I thought "to the left" didn't make any sense, why is his stuff in a box to the left? Then I thought "aha!", she's saying "to the lift" and she wants him to get his stuff out of her flat, down in the elevator and out of her life. Then I found out I was right the first time. Still makes no sense though.

ledge, Thursday, 26 July 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

still makes more sense than Beyonce calling an elevator a "lift," wtf

the Robitussin references in the Moby Grape song refer to its use as a recreational drug when large amounts are ingested, nowadays known as "robo-tripping". I've long wondered whether the Grape were getting high on the dextromethorphan- or codeine-laced version of Robitussin; the latter was much more readily available in 1967 than it is now, with many states now requiring a prescription for it. Outside the US, codeine cough syrups or pain relievers are still usually available without an rx.

The Move did a cover version, but they disbelieved the lyrics they heard, so they substituted "Your old bustle" instead.

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 April 2014 10:22 (eleven years ago)

"Robitussin" possibly chosen over "Romilar" because it sang better

Syd Barrett's "It Is Obvious" has the line "Your stars, my stars, simple cock bars". Syd, man, I know you were insane, but what?

rushomancy, Thursday, 24 April 2014 12:07 (eleven years ago)

I always thought it was cot bars... but, as you say, it's Syd after all

five years pass...

I put on Culture Club's 'That's the Way (I'm Only Trying to Help You)' and I cracked up when my gf made a face and said 'clowns caress you?!'. I insisted that no no, he said clouds! Come on. Clowns? As if. But then I looked it up and...hmm. Huh. Hmm. Well.
