JBR's #2598 rule of ILM: every poster has a unique wildcard thrown in for contrarianism's sake. What's yours? Defend your of-course-not-ironic love for this act, giving a description of why you love their music. What wild cards haven't yet been claimed? Your chance to call dibs!

I don't :-)

Well, OK, I love Orbital and they are definitely not particularly melodic at all.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

U2 (1988-1998) - unashamed bombast and ego-wank i just have to admire, with smart lyrics! and i've always loved The Edge's shivery twangs, can't help it - also based on the fact i've never had much of a problem with Bono since being old enough to apreciate that 'The Joshua Tree' was NOT necessarily just tedious drivel for grown-ups. really loved the whole notion and execution of Zoo TV and Popmart too, taking stadium rawk to a logical and more cerebral high-concept ultimatum. i know its a ghastly exhibition to all those who think rock and politics should not mix, but i guess i'm just not one of those people - and no amount of intellectual discourse is going to convince me this is any worse a sin than loving Avril or whoever.

I realized upon seeing that thread that mine was The Egyptian Lover--which I think is a pretty good one. It's ass-simple (how could someone NOT get the Egyptian Lover?) and obscure, and it figures nicely into the whole electro thing that's been going on.

In light of recent realizations however, I'm definitely leaning towards White Zombie/Rob Zombie. I've searched for White Zombie on ILM. There are absolutely no results suggesting Rob Zombie has any merit whatsoever. This is tragic! I really liked White Zombie when I was 9. I secretly wanted the CD, but thought it was stupid. (Got a free copy eventually but never listened to it.) By the time I was 14 I thought RobZombie was the biggest losah on the planet, and swore him off, but a soft spot remained. Now that I'm able to look at it more objectively I think "That really was a good idea, wasn't it?" He was obviously a precursor to Andrew WK, the sci-fi/monster movie schtick was well done, and he had a great rapping-via-the-undead voice that side-stepped what was so terrible about most rap metal. I vote classic. So why no critical re-evaluation for White Zombie?

Egyptian Lover is GREBT!

And yet every time my girlfriend tries to sell back her Egyptian Lover cds, no store will buy them...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Would japans first two albums count? cause I'm stupid fond of those

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I also am gay about Petula Clark

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say Burl Ives, but I'm sure somebody out there loves him as much as I do. There are no wild cards on ILM, there just aren't.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not that you're the only person that likes your wild card, it's that you have a history of bringing it up apropos of nothing on several threads, and you celebrate this artist to a degree no one else is willing to.

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i kinda like that el-p record. (in places.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Robbie Williams, The Ego Has Landed.

Son Volt's Wide Swing Tremolo

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

There are no wildcards, but only because everybody's got one, and we're all very accepting of that. (As long as you don't have too many -- then we string you up.)

Mine? Jamiroquai.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think about half my record collection is stuff most other people would consider wild cards. I just feel very strongly about the crap I loved in my youth. :-)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

me too, tho we do seem to admit it is 'crap'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Good crap. :-)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the whole Promise Ring catalog...

Aaron A., Wednesday, 23 April 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I've listened to it for the first time in ages and it has only grown better: Boney M's "Rasputin". If it's any indication of how good Nightflight to Venus is any indication, I need that shit NOW.

(oh those Russians)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Cat Stevens and Amplified Heart-era Everything But the Girl.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh! That, too!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this supposed to be something that's an anomaly in your collection (like Geir saying he likes an unmelodic act)? Or closer to Adam A.'s definition: something you champion to an absurd extreme (like, um, Killing Joke)?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

the mean of the two

I was hoping there would be some serious Fred Durst action by now

Adam A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Coldplay's Parachutes and the Counting Crows' August and Everything After (though I will not defend anything else in either band's catalogues).

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm tempted to say my wildcard is V/Vm (they're the band i own the most records by, after GbV, Pulp and Hefner). But really it's just pop music with extra noise and weirdness, which isn't really that leftfield for me.

Whitehouse are probably a bit more atypical of my taste because they are almost entirely tuneless, and I can't stand their non-noise tracks, but when they go full-on noise it really is rather thrilling..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Counting Crows' entire catalog.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

As Ally will probably tell you sometimes I come off like all I am is one big wildcard. But maybe that's just to her. So, uh, I guess Picket Fences and Mel C. (tho I haven't had anything to say about her in years coz, uh, she hasn't done anything worth talking about since Northern Star). I.e. the stuff that's considered crap even by most popist standards (Tho not Glenn McFuria's). I suppose my near-complete collection of Elvis Costello and Lou Reed might do the trick too? Probably not.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Kwame, but mostly right now I'm feeling this sudden wave of affection for Geir even though (nay, because!) he described Orbital as not-melodic: it's like now we know his limit!

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

KILLING JOKE ÜBER ÄLLES, HERETIC!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, my taste isn't very consistent though it does tend to focus more on the pop side of things.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't think of one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

There are scant variations of music which have yet to reveal their beauty.
