Julian Cope query

Can anyone point me in the right direction vis-a-vis JC's more recent (post 1997) material? I hear it's variable, you have to pick and choose? What's a good place to start?

Er anyone? He's middle class too, you know. That seems to get you all excited.

You mean all the stuff he's self-released and sold on his website? The Rite CDs, Odin, the Queen Elizabeth re-releases? The LAMF heavy metal stuff?

I love the Odin CD, but it is in fact a single 74 minute drone piece with him vocalizing a bit. Still, it works beautifully. Discover Odin is worth it for the excerpts from his forthcoming book, but mainly for the epic "18 Charms of Odin" recitation. Has a few musical pieces that I listened to once and now ignore.

If you like one of the Rite CDs, you'll probably find something worthwhile about all of them. They're like some kind of jam thing... I think there are three of them now.

The Queen Elizabeth stuff is ambient a la Odin but have a bit more going on and some truly scary noises synth dropped in, so don't put it on and take a nap.

LAMF is like some kind of metal thing, I've listened to the singles and can't stand them.

I wish he'd put out a proper Julian Cope LP sometime... Citizen Caned was supposed to be out years ago but no sign of it.

Post - 97 is difficult. There was a CD called An Audience With which he gave away with a tour a couple of years ago which has some good classic-Cope style stuff on. I find brain Donor hard work too: I love the idea of it but get a headache if I listen to it!!!!

Are you quite sure you've got all the classic stuff? I expect so but just in case:

Kilimanjaro and Wilder (Teardrop explodes)
World Shut Your Mouth and Fried (early solo stuff)
Peggy suicide and Jehovakill (early 90's)
Skellington and Droolian (out-takes and demos)

Good Cope stuff comes in twos!!!!!!!

Re Kim, the early (surreal as opposed to pagan) stuff rocks, although My Nation Underground is dreadfully overproduced. I saw him live, promoting St Julian (btw, what was that bloody mic stand about...I have dreams about stuff like that when I've eaten too much cheese), and performed a corking rendition of Greatness & Perfection, introduced as as an old Beatles' song.

A mate of mine in Bath sold Mr Cope a second hand computer the year before last. You'd think he'd be able to afford a new one, really, wouldn't you?

Depends what you are after (songs, ROCK, drones, weirdness).

The Floored Genius 3 CD of outakes has soem great bits if you like his words.

Personalyl I;ve time for a lot of it but stuff like Braindonor isn;t everyone's cup of tea.

Avoid Brain Donor at all costs.
