there's an interview in today's irish times with steve coleman
i've never heard of him before, but he comes across as very interesting in the interview...
so does anyone know anything about him?
any fans?
one of the reasons i ask is because the interview mentions that he has made a lot of his music available for free download, thus changing him from merely another interesting sounding musician that you hear about to someone whose back catalogue is attainable without having to spend a lot of money on someone you dont know...
his site is m-base.org (named for a musical theory he devised, appearenlty)
i'll probably download some stuff tomorrow,so any recommendations would be appreciated...

jesus, just had a look at the site, there's loads of albums available to download...
its great to see someone who is interested enough in their music to make it available for free, even though he could just sell all his albums rather than the few that aren't available as downloads...

i dunno. m-base always seemed like it might have potential. ruff funk and jazz. some relation to harmolodics. black scifi tendencies.

but but but, ah, the chops might've killed it. or something. i always found it way too rigid. arty. selfconscious might not be the right word. awful production sheen.

i gave up 10 years ago. maybe someone else knows.

i haven't heard anything by him yet,but i want him to be great cause he seems interesting and his music is free...

yeah, well, i wanted him to be great too. making his music free certainly adds to how interesting he is, but, as i said i dunno. let us know what you think after downloading!

he's also playing in bray (a town about half an hour from my house) on saturday, but i have exams,so i won't be going to that...)
