i saw gangstarr hosting rapcity a few weeks ago. they had a really skinny white guy. i can't remember his name. he wasn't very good, though.

i was going to see gangstarr in saskatoon but then i forgot about it for a really long time and when i remembered i didn't want to go anymore.

i have three gangstarr mp3s:

gangstarr ft. m.o.p. - half n' half
gangstarr - battle
gangstarr - just to get a rep

i've never heard of pharcyde.

!?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 24 April 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Gang Starr's 'Daily Operation' LP is fuckin great

Keith McD (Keith McD), Thursday, 24 April 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

almost everything Gangstarr had put out through 94's "Hard to Earn" was nearly flawless. "Step in the Arena" is one of the best hip hop albums of all time (well at least one of my favorites). primier was the undisputed champ of beats. i think they've fallen off in their old age (have you seen the magazine cover they're on right now where guru is holding a make believe joint and making that stupid spliff face?!)

but this isn't even a fair battle. pharcyde put out one fun album that's been turned into part of the college/ frat cannon. if i wanted to listen to melodic sing-y west coast hip hop from that period, i'd listen to freestyle fellowship.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 24 April 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I defy you to find one current frat guy who's ever even heard of the Pharcyde.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 24 April 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

guru was perhaps the worst mc of all time but never as horribly smugly 'cute' as the pharcyde

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 24 April 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

taking "sleepy mc" sides: guru vs. mos def?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 24 April 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Mase wins the sleep MC battle surely!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 24 April 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

altho he is/was actually shit

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 24 April 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Never heard of the Pharcyde?!? Bizarre Ride is classic. I think I'd rather listen to that album than any by GangStarr--it's a lot more fun--, but overall Gangstarr has put out more quality stuff than the 'Cyde.
(Never heard of Pharcyde? Are you in the UK?)

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Gang Starr, even though I went from tolerating Guru to not being able to listen to a single rhyme in the last few years. I would rather listen to 1000 American Idol auditions. (This says a lot about Premier and Pharcyde.)

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 24 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

How is Guru worse than any other non-talent in the mainstream?

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

cos guru is boring

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll take boring over annoying any old day

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

gangstarr by a long shot. guru may have a monotone delivery that some think boring, but pharcyde only had one good album, and even that is overated.

s>c>, Thursday, 24 April 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

but boredom is so permanent

labcab dude!

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 24 April 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 25 April 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck! That's always supposed to be signed Ma$e! I am a true fuck up.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 25 April 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Cue Eth with comment about how lame it is people have to post that pic all the time and how it was old before it even got out of Jess' hands and now it's just the worst thing on earth i am a horrible person thanx.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 25 April 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Sleepy MC's- Guru vs Mos Def,

Gotta go with Guru. Mos is so sleepy he's still hitting the snooze button on that second album.

R. Geary (rgeary), Friday, 25 April 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Daily Operation is one of the best albums of all time, and I'm not even a hip-hop kid. If you say Guru is a wack MC it is only because you don't understand the words, or the references. Premiere's beats are genius.

Pharcyde are more of some one-hit wonders... but BizarreRyde is a classic, nonetheless.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Friday, 25 March 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

haha whered this guy come from.

(I'd pick gang starr, just pure amount of material i listen to. When I was ten I recorded "passin me by" and listened to it over and over. I dont really listen to it any more except to reminisce but it is a great album too)

deej., Friday, 25 March 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

(haha "recorded" = "recorded off the radio to cassette."

deej., Friday, 25 March 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Either South America or the East bay if his email is to be believed.

Anyway, Gangstarr on volume, but I like both of the Pharcyde's first two albums, and also the Fatlip solo stuff.

Austin S (Austin, Still), Friday, 25 March 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

I like them both, but "Bizarre Ride" and "Labcabincalifornia" are serious nostalgia items for me. Too many great stoned highschool memories burned into my head. I really don't see a comparison between them and Gangstarr to tell the truth, but if I had to pick one to keep, Pharcyde definitely wins out.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Friday, 25 March 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Gang Starr is an all-time favorite of mine. I like pretty much everything they've done. That said though, they aren't THAT much better than classic Pharcyde. I'm sorta on outta-site outta-mind terms with Pharcyde. But every time I hear Bizarre Ride or "Runnin" its like damn..

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 25 March 2005 03:26 (twenty years ago)

Ok: THE TEST

both Gangstar & the Pharcyde appeared on the Brand New Heavies 'Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol1' back in 92, each adding their vox to some live funk. So, which is hotter?

It's Gettin' Hectic vs. Soulflower

(actually, on this I'm going with Pharcyde)

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Pharcyde bat far. Bizarre Ride is a stone cold classic, and Labcabincalifornia is actually really good too.
I've never stayed awake through a whole Gangstarr album...

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Gangstarr for preference. Though not so much these days.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

Some cutesy "boyband with guitars" really does need to cover "Passin' Me By" asap.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 10 October 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

i fuxx with "runnin" + a couple joints off bizarre ryde ("return of the b-boy") but i stick to my smug/cutesy post up top

and what, Friday, 10 October 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

carne asada, Friday, 10 October 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

and what, Friday, 10 October 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

carne asada, Friday, 10 October 2008 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

Pharcyde's first album is great, second one is eh, everything after is awful, but I never got into Gangstarr, so Pharcyde wins

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 10 October 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

i still like gang starr more but wtf @ 'smug/cutesy,' pharcyde were the shit

joe 40oz (deej), Friday, 10 October 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

how many dickheads who throw around the ma$e 'punchlines' even know!! totally fuckin weak eurodisney line, hey guys have you noticed hospital food is shitty and women go to the bathroom in groups, also airplane peanuts wtf

hahah I admit I heavy lolled at this

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 10 October 2008 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

haha! one of my first threads.
Passing me by-timeless hiphop track?

carne asada, Friday, 10 October 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

wtf @ the amount of RONG in this thread, especially the original part

First Dude (The Reverend), Saturday, 11 October 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

Gangstarr good when I wanna appreciate some subtle shit &/or just let a beat rock. There's a lot to appreciate.

Pharcyde's good when I wanna reminisce about some shit but not worth much otherwise. I never put on Pharcyde to hear a super dope beat or great delivery on a particular line, and I definitely don't play em cause they're lyrical dudes.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 11 October 2008 01:55 (seventeen years ago)

ergo Gangstarr btw

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 11 October 2008 01:55 (seventeen years ago)

Aren't "timeless" and "hiphop" mutually exclusive?

::ducks:::
