Fight of the divas

I just downloaded a live version of the Sisters of Mercy covering Jolene (which is a great tune). Andrew Eldritch > Dolly Parton when it comes to diva-ing.

Jolene's great but no way I take it over prime Loretta

one year passes...
Never knew Strawberry Switchblade covered "Jolene." But now I do. Merry little version.

man, that's pretty much a beatles vs. stones question. minor-key introspection with killer dark melody vs. punch-out-the-lights I-IV-V sawdust-laced country-rocker.

and i go with "jolene" right now, though i might be wrong.

(or maybe it's more like a dwight yoakam vs. jason & the scorchers question.)

Jolene. No contest. I love me some Loretta, but we are talking about one of the best songs ever here. Besides, everyone has covered "Jolene," and not because Dolly didn't nail it the first time. Also, Jolene can stand up to different interpretations (see versions by Mindy Smith, Rubber Rodeo, and Susanna and the Magic Orchestra). You Ain't Woman... is what it is, you know?
