Slowdive. Gimme what ya got.

Can anyone suggest similar bands to Slowdive that are decent? I've listened to Mojave3, the follow on band, but they leave me a bit cold. I like the dreamy, moody vocals Slowdive create, plus the clever instrumental use. Names of bands, and their best songs would be a help. Cheers!

Galaxie 500
Spiritualised
Pale Saints
Bark Psychosis
Anything that counts as Dream Pop.
A random selection.

Pearl by chapterhouse has got the lovely Rachel doing backing vocals, in fact their whole whirlpool album is good.

yes to Pale Saints. I'm going to try and find a deeper sleep for Stephen when I get home.

Some early Ride stuff such as nowhere and vapour trail.

Anybody on the Morr tribute to Slowdive, by default. (Well, maybe.)

Bethany Curve

Secret Shine's stuff is about to be re-released by Clairecords... but nobody really sounds like Slowdive.

When I say about to I'm being hopeful.

Does Morr's Slowdive tribute sound like Slowdive? (Because its Morrissey tribute sounds nothing like Morrissey. Although it's good.)

No, but most of the bands on there would like you to think that at some point elsewhere in their career they do. Thus Guitar.

"dive bomb
...they may aswell have written a song
called 'hilary's tears fall onto her face
after her dweadful a level results'..."

10 points for the reviewer
10 points for the magazine/paper

god bless him.

Paul Lester, Melody Maker, Fall 1991...yes? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Windy and Carl, for sure -- the textures are very similar, if W&C are quite less song-oriented.

heh ned knows his melody maker reviews
that's fer darn sure. 'they' said that
review 'killed' shoegazing. it'd barely started
if memory serves.

I'm leaning more toward music that is less song-oriented. 'Texture' is totally the right word for Slowdive. Its like the music is built in layers with every component...words, the hushed voices, and carefully chosen instruments all adding to the atmosphere. I don't think lyrics, in their literal form are always necessary. Compose for me a nice menagery of sounds, and I'm a happy lass. I'll get your point, just what you mean to say, quite nicely thank-you. Does that make sense?

just going through some of my mix CDs here at the office ...

Clock Strikes Thirteen - "Six Foot Drop"
Kimone - "Have Faith"
The Emerald Down - "Another Day"
Malory - "Falling Shine"
Blood Group - "Lately I've Had A Hard Time"
Empress - "From Tidewater To Timberline"
Carissa's Wierd - "Lazy Eyelids"
Mus - "Embalses Y Rios"
Torrez - "The Flame" (more Mazzy Star-ish)
Michael J. Sheehy - "Dark Country Moments" (ditto)

Compared to Slowdive it's more drone-y (and it lacks the "sunny acoustic guitar" vibe that crops up from time to time in Mojave) but I shall once again proclaim my love for Aarktica -- should appeal to your interest in nicely layered, guitar-based textures. This year's Pure Tone Audiology is a good place to start; I think last year's Or You Could Just Go Through Your Whole Life And Be Happy Anyway is equally strong. Paul Lester would love that last title, eh?

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 24 April 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think texture is totally the wrong word for Slowdive. They're classic because they actually have songs, even the stuff on Pygmalion.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 24 April 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

malory is the closest i've heard any band come to sounding like slowdive, the singer even sounds like a german neil halstead.

When I say about to I'm being hopeful.

July 2003 appears to be the timeframe for reissue of Secret Shine stuff.

I heart Malory.
