Biggest Used Bin CD Of All Time?

Message Bookmarked

Having worked at a couple of record stores I've seen literally tons of used CDs, and plenty of overstock on them especially. There are titles you always see in used bins, but which do you seen most often? Which ones are doubled-up / tripled-up?

The following CDs I've seen many many many used overstock on:

The Bodyguard sndtrk / Red Hot Chili Pepper's "What Hits?!" / Jesus Jones / EMF / Hootie / Pearl Jam Vs. or Vitology

There are other soundtracks and whatnot. My offer for "biggest of all time" has to go to REMs Monster, though. And in my defense, I offer the following reasons:

a] REM fans probably sell used CDs all the time
b] this is the first one that would sell
c] it was after Automatic, which was the sappiest, and most popular, of the REM records
d] Mike Mills' nudie suit
e] Design / layout

[I've still got it [along with many other rem cds] but haven't listened to it in a while, liked it ok at the time, though].

Have you folks been over this? i tried to check...

Any other nominations?

david day (winslow), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

terence trent d'arby is an old standby. i couldn't even get rid of monster--eventually i just put it in the trash.

4mateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Monster is the clear winner here. Also Dookie, Live Through This, Sparkle and Fade, Whip-Smart--1994 was a HUGE year for sellbacks.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll second monster. and that's the first REM where i just said 'screw it - i'm not buying that' after hearing some tracks on the radio.

i used to see

a lot, too... i wonder if some stuff shows up more heavily in used CD bins if BMG or columbia house (CD clubs) have been promoting it, or sending it out as the D of the month...

chr1sb0y (chr1sb0y), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah bmg/columbia house are key to understanding used bins. also lots of seemed-good-at-the-time reissues like luaka bop's dance raga dance or whatever it's called.

4mateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

One hit wonders, pop diva cheeze and teen pop clap clogs the artieries of any of those chain used cd places like CD Warehouse or Hastings.

earlnash, Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely we did this before??

It was long, long ago, but just curious.

jm (jtm), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

REM Monster, oh yeah, also Breeders Last Spash, which is from the same era.

Jeff Buckley - Grace

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Buckley? c'mon, people LOVE that CD. Especially people who don't buy/sell music that much. Like the Cranberries, I was going to say tha Crannies, but that's a stalwart of 30somethings half-assed CD collections worldwide. Although a big garage sale disc, I imagine...

david day (winslow), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Buckley? c'mon, people LOVE that CD.

Such a shame too.

At the late Poindexter Records in Durham, NC, the used bin had cards for each letter. Except for Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe, which had its own card.

Pretenders-Last of The Independents
10,000 Maniacs-Our Time In Eden

Wu Tang Forever, totally. I was trying to dig around for some hip-hop ones, but came up lame. i mean, besides hammer.

david day (winslow), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i have seen loveless in the used bins of three different cd stores recently

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the obvious answer to this thread is Guns n' Roses - The Spaghetti Incident.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Buckley? c'mon, people LOVE that CD.

I only know what I see, and I see five copies of Grace in the used bin. That's all I'm saying.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Abd yes, a lot of people DO love that CD. They love it so much that they go out and tell everyone in the world that this is a must-have staggering masterpiece that will change their lives, and then those people go out and buy it and say to themselves, "Eh."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 24 April 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

At most used bins, I tend to see a huge amount of hair metal. I guess it all had to go somewhere.

I usually only browse the metal section, and Guns 'n Roses "The Spagetti Incident?" clearly wins. Honourable mentions:
Dog Eat Dog "All Boro Kings"
Limp Bizkit "Significant Other"
Korn "Follow The Leader"
AC/DC "For Those About To Rock" (strangely)
Biohazard "Urban Discipline" and "State Of The World Address"
Slayer "Divine Intervention"
Anthrax "The Sound Of White Noise"

paul cox (paul cox), Thursday, 24 April 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Please tell me someone else has noticed that used vinyl is ALL ABOUT HERB ALPERT.

Especially if you're cruising for records at the Salvation Army. Right next to Mr. Alpert in almost every case? Every album Ray Conniff ever recorded.

paul cox (paul cox), Thursday, 24 April 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"Right next to Mr. Alpert in almost every case? Every album Ray Conniff ever recorded"

I noticed that the last time I went cruising for cheap vinyl. Other artists cramming the bins:
Neil Diamond
Linda Ronstadt (almost bought "Mad Love" to see if it was as bad as I'd heard it was)
Glenn Campbell (especially "Southern Nights")

All these artists have dethrowned Chicago as the lords and lady of used vinyl. A couple years ago, this one place had a couple boxes ful of MULTIPLE COPIES OF EVERY SINGLE ALBUM CHICAGO ISSUED DURING THE VINYL ERA.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 24 April 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

kinda off topic as it's re: VINYL but if you live in the bay area then along with herb alpert and linda ronstadt you'll find shitloads of barbra streisand, elton john, and boz scaggs. plus the scourge of the bins, of course, i'm talking about Thirty Ought Six.

Sad to note the Amps tip on returns, as it's quite an enjoyable album... certainly the best album throughout featuring a former Pixie!! (imho, folks, imho... though pod has *great* moments)

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Friday, 25 April 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I always see used copies of The Flaming Lips' Transmissions from the Satellite Heart. Why? Because people are STUPID and they wouldn't know good music if it came up and bit them in the ass. They suck. Everyone sucks. I suck. The world can go to hell.

Evan (Evan), Friday, 25 April 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

doc annabell... i'll second the herb alpert... the whip cream album... the record you are definitely most likely to see in a random bin at a garage sale or flea market... (and i've seen that hold true all over the US.) we went garage saling in the baltimore area and bought all the ones we saw that morning and got 4!

msp, Friday, 25 April 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, in the UK, the second-hand vinyl places seem to great resting places for:
  • Leo Sayer!
  • Val Doonican (Especially "Val Doonican Rocks... But Gently")
  • "The Best of Bread"!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Friday, 25 April 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

From about 1987 to 1993, the top second-hand vinyl albums in NY and Providence, almost without competition, were The Time's Ice Cream Castles and the Meat Puppets' Huevos. Anticipating Day-mania n the wake of Purple Rain, Warner pressed approximately 8 billion copies of The Time LP, flooding bins for the rest of recorded time. Huevos was a disappointment at just the moment when everyone expected them to explode with something great.

Sasha Frere-Jones (Sasha Frere-Jones), Friday, 25 April 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely there are no used CD stores that have less than three copies of Genesis' "Calling all stations"?

That one is more likely to appear in sales bins than in used CD bins. The album was mainly a sales flop more than an artistic flop. Several of those who bought it (save for Phil Collins fans maybe, with no respect for Tony Banks' songwriting talent) actually thought it was surprisingly good)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Agree with Evan about Flaming Lips. However, I wouldn't be surprised to find a copy of "Zaireeka" in a used bin considering you need 4 CD players and a mixer to listen to it properly. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Calling All Stations, that is a good call there.

david day (winslow), Friday, 25 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Wake Up! by the Boo Radleys (sadly!). And the "Great Escape" is always there in triplicate.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about the Lips cd is that most people bought because it had "She Don't Use Jelly", and since the rest of the album didnt sound like it, it was eventually sold. The same goes for Nirvana's "Nevermind". It was really common in the used bins up until the media's most recent case of Cobain-love ('99-present).

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Friday, 25 April 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

How about "Kid A"? I would expect several of those who bought it because they loved OKC got so disappointed about it that they did actually sell it again...

Carey (Carey), Saturday, 26 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"there's nothing "recent" about the media's Cobain-love"

Well, there is, and there isn't. True, Cobain has always been a popular artist in terms of coverage, there was a time (from about '96-'98) where attention was paid to other artists and trends. Nirvana would get write ups every now and again, but nothing really big. Then 1999 comes around, and it's time for several publications to round up "The Greatest Albums of The 90s". "Nevermind" tops nearly every list (I think it lost to "Tails" by Lisa Loeb in the poll conducted by "Cat Fancy"). Around this same time, rap metal and teen pop are in in full swing. Perhaps due to writers recent jags with the Nirvana catalogue, and the relative crappiness of mainstream music in 1999, talk of "A New-New Rock Authenticity" starts spreading, and naturally Kurt Cobain becomes the movement's poster boy (since he and Eddie Vedder shared the position the first time around, and Eddie wasn't very hip in '99). Add to that Generation Y discovering Nirvana's music, an impending box set, Charles Cross' Cobain bio, "Kurt & Courtney", the lawsuit, the hits package, and of course, the whole garage rock revival. The result? Cobain's probably gotten more coverage in the last few years then he ever got while alive, and Nirvana's work is commercially more popular than ever.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Saturday, 26 April 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

In UK publications, it has serious competition from "OK Computer" and sometimes also "Screamadelica"

As far as soundtracks go, I swear that the soundtrack for The Bodyguard, as omnipresent as it was for a while there, still was no match for the 500 pink spines on the shelf of the Wayne's World soundtrack.

I saw two Long Fin Killie albums just today, which made me terribly sad. they were so underrated. Here in Vancouver, I've see a million copies of both Age Of Electric albums. Vinyl-wise, SO MUCH TOTO. Lots of Foreigner, too, and Pat Benatar.

No one has yet mentioned maybe the #1 single, which was, of course, Elton John's Candle In The Wind '97. I remember when A&B was selling new stock, remaindered at 49 cents... bleh.

Upthread, someone asked why you don't see "Happy Nation" in the used record bins. I don't know about UK/USA, but here in Finland the record store clerks simply don't buy any records they know they can't resell. Thus, you don't see a lot of europop or "Synthesizer Greatest" records in used bins.
