Peter Paul and Mary - Classic or Dud

Ah, the music of my parents.

Maybe it's because the last time I heard them was on a long car trip listening to their greatest-hits comp, with a family member who truly cannot sing singing along, but I find these guys three of the most annoying musicians what ever existed. Even "Leavin' on a Jet Plane," a pleasant song I've always liked, began to sound grating alongside "500 Miles" and (ugh ugh ugh) "If I Had a Hammer." And what was with the incredibly unnecessary slam on the Mamas and the Papas?

very too music of my parents for me to judge (that "folk years" box set they're hawking on TV could be subtitled "songs Anthony was sung when he was a toddler," aside from the calypso numbers -sadly!). But it's a dud in the sense that I won't mind never hearing the songs again.

Mamas & the Papas slam? I thought it was an homage? "They really nail it to the wall", don't they? "500 Miles" is a beautiful song. Also, I'm partial to "Old Stewball". And I love that rascal Puff. I think they're great.

Classic for Puff The Magic Dragon, natch. And for spawning the inevitable Far Side cartoon...

"They really nail it to the wall", don't they?

Yeah, when the words don't get in the way.

Never loved PPM.

Now, The Kingston Trio (Guard edition), they were beyond coolness.

Oh, My name is Kenny, I thought that line was more of a criticism of the radio that won't play it unless you lay it between the lines. So you have to write songs about potsmoking like "Puff the Magic Dragon" or "Safe in My Garden". I could be wrong, though.

not as good as the Springfields (who anglicised their schtick big time)

Has to be said, hats off to Albert Grossman for manufacturing a folk trio so cannily: the earnest activist, the cut-up and the wholesome sex symbol.
