Total classic. I haven't heard much B.O.C. (I heard/loved the song "Godzilla") but this one just has such great lyrics.

David Allen, Friday, 25 April 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the song that JBR and dave q met the afterlife to!

David, it's a total classic and if you really like it I seriously recommend picking up the Agents of Fortune record from which it comes. The whole record is uniformly excellent, I think you'd really like it!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 25 April 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

What Mr. Diamond said.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 25 April 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the song that JBR and dave q met the afterlife to!

We said we were gonna, but we were actually listening to "Debbie Denise" when the car went over the cliff. Just as well.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 25 April 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

classic!

the snl bit with will ferrell playing the cowbell and chris walken producing is possibly even more classic.

the riff is brilliant; 'mexican bandits' by felt always reminds me of it.

are the lyrics written by that crazy rock critic, 'the aesthetics of rock' guy, who was sort of like the robert hunter for BOC on a bunch of records, if i'm not mistaken?

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Friday, 25 April 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, Meltzer? No it was not written by Meltzer. However the funny thing is that it is one of the "big three" - the three enduring 'classic rock' radio hits that Blue Oyster Cult maintains to this day ("Don't Fear the Reaper", "Godzilla", and "Burnin' For You") - and all of those are written or co-written and sung by Buck Dharma! But Eric Bloom was the primary lead singer. Poor Eric Bloom.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 25 April 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

that's very funny.

buck dharma? sounds like a new age porn star.

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Friday, 25 April 2003 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah well, you know, sci-fi and kerouac. His real name was Donald Roeser. It really is quite funny that this great group made all these albums, lots of great songs, all with good ol' Eric Bloom singing; and they manage to achieve three hits all led by the other guy.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 25 April 2003 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Funnily enough, I caught BöC's video for "Burnin' For You" on VH1 Classic today. Anyone remember this one? I could quite possibly be the most tragic video of all time.

"Don't Fear the Reaper," meanwhile, is a fuckin' classic, and anyone who says differently should be summarily flogged.

Their finest hour, however, reamins "Joan Crawford (Has Risen from the Grave)."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 25 April 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"I've got a fever and the only presciption is more cowbell."

Fuckin A man its a total classic, now to comb my mullet.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 25 April 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

More Cowbell! ha! Uber-Classic!

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Friday, 25 April 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"Chris-TINA!"

J (Jay), Friday, 25 April 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "Black Blade" - but don't ask me to justify myself

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i think their finest moment is "secret treaties".

"career of evil" should have been the hit that "godzilla" was. what a same.
i'd like to do it to your daughter in a dirt road.

j fail (cenotaph), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Easily one of the greatest songs of all time. It's got a great melody, great harmonies, is about a double suicide, and has one of the illest and evilest guitar solos ever. so, classic. duh!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, obv.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 25 April 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the SNL thing really wasn't that funny

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed. Typical SNL one-joke-dragged-out-to-long.

The best part though was that they actually tried to look like BOC! When probably 70% of the audience doesn't even know who the song is by let alone what BOC look like.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes but Walken was supposed to be "producer Bruce Dickinson," which is totally ridiculous because everybody knows Paul Di'Anno was the singer for Iron Maiden when "Don't Fear the Reaper" was recorded, by the time anybody'd even heard of Bruce Dickinson BOC was shootin' that creep-out-fest video for "Burnin' For You" and ruing the day they threw away the instruction books for their Linns & Oberheims

that said, though, Walken's overenunciation of the word "cowbell" gives me fits

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I woulda liked the SNL skit even more if fuckin' Jimmy Fallon wasn't cracking up DURING the skit. Grr. I hate that bullshit.

It's a comedy classic for me despite that Fallon crap though. I can't even HEAR a cowbell in a song these days without Walken yelling "I have a fever..." in my head.

Song's a classic too. I wish Buck Dharma sang all their stuff. How's that solo album of his?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the skit, but the producer(not the singer) Bruce Dickinson (who Walkin played) only produced the reissue of "Agents". Sandy Pearlman, Murray Krugman, and David Lucas manned the boards for the original LP.

Anyways, classic all the way (along w/the rest of the first side of "Agents...").

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Friday, 25 April 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i also liked how they called the demo of "Don't Fear The Reaper" included in the reissue "The No Cow-Bell Version" in tribute to the skit.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Friday, 25 April 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I love "E.T.I.". Just the way those two (wah-ed?) chords open the song. And the chorus is just glorious.

Anthony: the Dharma solo record is pretty good, but I haven't listened to it in ages. If you like Buck's voice it's worth looking for. It has one Meltzer track on it. Obv 80's drums n' all that though. It took me ages to find the fucker though. Like I think I looked for it for five or six years (this was pre-eBay)(or at least pre-me-using eBay).

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 25 April 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Iron Maiden was around in 1976?

Does anyone else love "Morning Final"?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 25 April 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

How's that solo album of his?

I actually won this in a high school give-away but never played it! I think I gave it to someone afterwards.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 25 April 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes but Walken was supposed to be "producer Bruce Dickinson,"

Not to be Johnny Pedantic, but those early BöC albums were produced by one Bruce Dickinson, not -- however -- the same gent who sings for the Maiden. Know your history, students!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 25 April 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

From an interview with Eric Bloom:

"It was completely fiction," Bloom said, laughing, "but that's what kind of made it bizarre. They made it all up. Funny thing is, the actor who plays the cowbell guy - Will Ferrell - he's got a name at the end and it says he died. I've had people come up to me and ask, 'What happened to that guy who died?' I'm like, 'Uh, there was no guy that died. It was all fiction from beginning to end.' And Bruce Dickinson is a real guy, but he has nothing to do with 'Don't Fear (The Reaper).' He works for Sony and he's in charge of the production and remastering of all our old albums. He had nothing to do with the original 1976 'Don't Fear (The Reaper).'

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a fever and the only prescription is more bingo.

Chris V. (Chris V), Saturday, 26 April 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The re-releases from 2001 were all "produced for reissue" by one Bruce Dickinson. When did that sketch first air?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 April 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

'What happened to that guy who died?'

Is that kind of a rhetorical question?

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 26 April 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The re-releases from 2001 were all "produced for reissue" by one Bruce Dickinson. When did that sketch first air?

Um... *checks* April 8, 2000?

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish SNL did more skits where they imagined why some absurd element appears on an old rock song. Though they should cut out that "where they are now?" text. That's shitty comedy usually.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 26 April 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anybody else think of the book "The Stand" when that song comes on? And I have to admit that I bought the reissues but just couldn't keep 'em in the rotation, even though "Reaper" is one of my all-time favorite songs.

ClevelandPat, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

One of their Byrds-y tracks. Very good song. Not sold on the whole Agents of Fortune album, though.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

Hall Of Fame Classic!!! Love that song to DEATH.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

this SNL skit is a big hit among college kids (i know, i was one until last year), but 98% of them don't know who the hell BOC is.

ClevelandPat, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

Pity the fools!

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

that will ferrell gif is timed perfectly with "T.V. Eye" on my headphones! hahahaa

my oldest brother got to see BOC live back in the day w/ Black Sabbath (the Black and Blue Tour). Dio had just joined Sabbath I think.

eman (eman), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

Great song. Whenever that middle part that sounds different starts up, I always think, WAIT- WHAT IS THIS SONG? I KNOW THIS SONG! But then it goes back to the main tune, and I think, oh yeah, it's the same song.

That stretched version is all kinds of awesome. It'd sound perfectly at home on a Boards of Canada album.
